Discover Alice. Private Investigator of the Supernatural.

Even the coldest hearts can burn…

After closing a big case for the Vampire Court, mage private investigator Alice Worth is relieved to be back solving magical mysteries with her ghost sidekick Malcolm and spending quality time with sexy alpha werewolf Sean. Her latest case puts her on the trail of a burglary ring targeting wealthy collectors of magical objects. Meanwhile, Alice’s grandfather, crime lord Moses Murphy, fights a local boss for control of the city. Soon a new danger emerges: Moses’s new lieutenant is someone Alice knows and this is one family reunion she wants to avoid at all costs.

When Sean is injured as a result of her investigation, Alice faces the wrath of his pack and finds herself in a carefully laid trap. To save the city from Moses and his lieutenant, she risks capture by her grandfather and unimaginable torture at his hands. To save Sean, she risks losing everything she’s fought so hard to gain. But Alice has never backed down from anything in her life and she’s not about to start now…

Review:

“Little by little, one step at a time, I was freeing myself from my past and the fortress I’d built for myself.”

Alice is back at it with mage magic, a PI license (currently employed by the Vampire court), a budding romance she’s savoring, but trying her hardest not to foul up, and evading the ever present danger that is her grandfather. Heart of Ice by Lisa Edmonds, book 3 in the Alice Worth series, displays a prowess in heart and soul, and the ice she inexorably wields like a second skin; on demand to defend herself. Another win in my opinion, another anxious wait for book 4.

Alice is working hard. When busy infiltrating hate groups to expose their anti-“supe” sentiment, she’s retrieving magical artifacts imbued with volatile power. Naturally, this innate ability of hers rankles those of “lesser means” and makes Alice the target of revenge. All part of the job, she thinks. Not so much for those who love her. This particular foe is a weaponized adversary and Alice’s protection becomes monumentally important for Sean, her werewolf beau and Charles, the vampire who’d love to be on the receiving end of her passions. When the posturing ends, both Charles and Sean scramble to outshine the other, you wonder where Alice’s heart really lies. While I’m definitely pro-vampire, Sean’s a genuinely good guy (kinda like how Peeta was good for Katniss). Alice has been fiercely independent for so long, however, Sean may end up as collateral damage; choices forcing her hand. It’s heartening to see Alice embrace her developing relationship, she genuinely feels deeply for Sean, but it may prove to be too secure in an all too insecure environment.

As the girlfriend of the alpha, pack politics are a bit more stifling than Alice anticipated and it’s really getting old being stared down and snarled at as a sign of displeasure. Those in the pack who resent her non-shifter status can just suck it! Of course that reaction is on the down-low because Alice can’t disrupt or interfere in Sean’s inner circle. Investigative work, retrieving ancient magical artifacts, and finding a place within the shifter community all tend to be harrowing and detrimental to Alice’s anonymity, which is paramount to her success as Alice Worth.

I’d previously drawn similarities between Alice and a few popular fictional characters, but allow me to declare that Alice is “Worth”-y and simply a strong ass hero. Not only can she defend herself, and others, in physical combat, and magical strengths (her spellwork is tantalizing to the senses), but she can make the toughest decisions, those of the heart, to protect the ones she loves. This comes at great cost to her, the safety of her dearest and cherished few.

I’ve said too much and not enough. I’m so happy to have started this series! Alice is always balancing happiness and duty. She will sacrifice as she sees fit, but hopes to maintain those close relationships…should they start to falter. It’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission? Oh, oh. The usually-far-from-tight noose has found its mark and Alice finds herself too exposed. How neutral will Sean be if Alice calls in vampire allies to curtail threats? I’m first in line to inhale those unfolding events. I love Alice Worth!

Description:
Join Alice. Private Investigator of the Supernatural.

It has been a rough month for mage private investigator Alice Worth.

Alice hasn’t had a decent night’s sleep in weeks, her relationship with werewolf Sean Maclin is on the rocks, a federal agent hounds her every step, and a powerful vampire whose ulterior motives have ulterior motives watches her every move. It’s enough to drive any woman to drink.

Just when Alice’s ghost sidekick Malcolm is about to stage an intervention, her former employer, Mark Dunlap, enlists her help to find out who’s been kidnapping women off the streets. As the list of the missing grows, the city’s anger turns against the vampires, and the Vampire Court hires Mark and Alice to find those responsible. After the case reunites her with Sean, Alice is forced to confront painful demons from her past, as well as the very real demon who wants her dead and the vampire determined to control her power.

When tragedy strikes close to home and a friend’s life hangs in the balance, Alice goes up against the most powerful adversary she’s ever faced in an explosive showdown that will leave Alice and her city forever changed.

Review:

Reading in chronological order is not something I take lightly, my friends.  But life was just so busy, I had to dive in to Heart of Fire sans introductory book *wipes upper lip*.  Not only was it a great read, but I may have found my new guilty pleasure! ?.  Kudos to the talented writing of Lisa Edmonds!

I’ve deciphered that Alice is a mage, the best around, but she’s hiding from a powerful, terrifying grandfather who used her abilities for self-aggrandizement.  She’s managed to fly under his radar, so she’s staying busy working her PI business and invariably making friends.  Friends who want to get close, want to, you know, be friendly.  Alice, being on this side of churlish, struggles to maintain said friendships and that alone is entertaining as well as endearing (think Marvel’s Jessica Jones).  Surviving her childhood is a cautionary tale for future relationships, but she hasn’t learned to be proactive just yet.

When Alice takes on a case of disappearing prostitutes and homeless people, “We’re in the middle of a drug-fueled, magic -enhanced crime wave”, while being stalked by a poltergeist (though this one is reserved solely for her eyes), her mage skills, and team player camaraderie, are stretched to the limit.  Alice extends her knowledge, experience and savvy to former bosses, former lovers, would-be lovers, to federal agents.  Will Alice be able to discover the menace and navigate the waters of her expanding magic, including several interested/opportunistic supernatural creatures who may seek to undermine or sabotage her investigation?  How can she ask for help when vested parties can’t seem to get along?

Alice is an independent, intriguing woman.  She’s keeping a low profile to remain undetected by her grandfather, but her skills have progressed and augmented to impressive levels; attracting lots of attention.  Not all welcome.  I’d be lying if I didn’t address similarities with other characters I’ve read.  My gut reactions to Alice, Charles and Sean’s relationship was reminiscent of another well known series involving Anita Blake, Jean Claude *pause, swoon* and Richard’s.  Malcolm the ghost reminded me of Angel, Charley Davidson’s cholo sidekick in that spellbinding series, buuuut they were only traces — I thoroughly enjoyed Alice Worth by her own merits.  This is due to the the energy and spirit of Lisa Edmonds.  She developed a good storyline layered with depth and intention to entice the reader.  I want to retrace Alice’s steps to her first encounter with Malcolm, are they bound?, to the men of varying species who find her so irresistible.  They’ve got good taste!

Lisa Edmonds has made an instant fan of me.  I look forward to reading the next case that requires Alice’s special set of skills.  Maybe a certain character returns to collaborate, or another character disappoints Alice, thus allowing for a change of heart?  A shakeup like she never imagined?  My bias is showing, but I’m here for it!  Until then, I’m making it a point to read book 1.

Ever The Hunted by Erin Summerill – a Review

Ever The Hunted by Erin Summerill – a Review

Ever the HuntedAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Seventeen year-old Britta Flannery is at ease only in the woods with her dagger and bow. She spends her days tracking criminals alongside her father, the legendary bounty hunter for the King of Malam—that is, until her father is murdered. Now outcast and alone and having no rights to her father’s land or inheritance, she seeks refuge where she feels most safe: the Ever Woods. When Britta is caught poaching by the royal guard, instead of facing the noose she is offered a deal: her freedom in exchange for her father’s killer.

However, it’s not so simple.

The alleged killer is none other than Cohen McKay, her father’s former apprentice. The only friend she’s ever known. The boy she once loved who broke her heart. She must go on a dangerous quest in a world of warring kingdoms, mad kings, and dark magic to find the real killer. But Britta wields more power than she knows. And soon she will learn what has always made her different will make her a daunting and dangerous force.

Review:

Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill is the first book in her new Clash of Kingdoms series.  This is a fantasy novel with wonderful world-building by Summerill.  In this world there are two factions that are at war with each other.  The story revolves around our heroine, Britta, whom we meet at the start.  She lives alone after the death of her father, who was murdered.  He was an elite bounty hunter for the King of Malam. Britta knows that soon her home will be confiscated, and she will have nowhere to go.  Desperate for food, she enters the Ever Woods to hunt prey, and after she succeeds, she is captured by the Kings guards.  To save her own life, she makes a deal with the King’s Regent to help three guards track down the murderer of her father.  The problem…..the man they say who killed her father was his former apprentice and her childhood crushe…Cohen McKay.

In any new fantasy world, things do start off slow, as the author will show us the world we are now in.  The two factions are Malem, which is governed by the King and the Channelers,  who have magic and powers, but are prosecuted by those from Malem. Summerill does a good job creating a nice flow, as we learn about the two kingdoms, but the storyline is still very much centered on Britta.

As one of the best trackers, Britta and the three guards (Captain Omar, Leif and Tomas) follow the trail that she finds to bring them closer to Cohen.  In a short period, Britta will come face to face with Cohen, and realize that he is innocent of the murder charges.  Together they escape the guards and try to find the real murderer.  What follows is an exciting, action filled and intense story that will bring both heroes to the brink of death.  Along the way, there are many twists and turns, as well as betrayals that put them further in danger.  Britta will learn more about her life that her father hid from her, and meet someone who will tell her the truth of her past, and how to use her ability.  Most of all, this is a sweet romance between Britta and Cohen, that was wonderfully written by Summerill.  What starts out as a childhood friendship, family dynamics and hidden feelings becomes a love that was so nice to watch grow.

As I have noted in previous fantasy first books, the key to a successful start of a series is to have good characters that you care about.   In Ever the Hunted, we not only have Britta, a wonderful heroine, who has just begun to harness her powers; Cohen, a great hero, who loves Britta with all his heart; and some other truly great characters; Leif, one of the good guards; Enat, a Channeler, who is more than a teacher to Britta; and even Captain Omar, who was cold and unforgiving early on.

This turned out to be a very nice fast paced story line, well written by Summerrill, with great characters and  many surprises along the way.  Ever the Hunted is wonderful start to a new series, which I recommend that you read. I look forward to the next book in the Clash of the Kingdoms series.

Lanore McIlvrae has been on the run from Adair for hundreds of years, dismayed by his mysterious powers and afraid of his temper. She betrayed Adair’s trust and imprisoned him behind a stone wall to save Jonathan, the love of her life. When Adair was freed 200 years later, she was sure that he would find her and make her existence a living hell. But things turned out far different than she’d imagined.

Four years later, Lanore has tracked Adair to his mystical island home, where he has been living in self-imposed exile, to ask for a favor. She wants Adair to send her to the hereafter so she may beg the Queen of the Underworld to release Jonathan, whom she has been keeping as her consort. Will Lanore honor her promise to Adair to return? Or is her intention to reunite with Jonathan at any cost?

Of all the forces of the universe, the most mysterious, confounding, and humbling is the power of love. The epic story of love and loss, magic and destiny that began with The Taker and sparked a chase around the world in The Reckoning comes to a surprising conclusion with The Descent.

The Heavens Rise by Christopher Rice – a Review

The Heavens Rise by Christopher Rice – a Review

The Heavens RiseLinks to order The Heavens Rise: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / Goodreads

Description:
New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rice brilliantly conjures the shadowed terrors of the Louisiana bayou—where three friends confront a deadly, ancient evil rising to the surface—in this intense and atmospheric new supernatural thriller.

It’s been a decade since the Delongpre family vanished near Bayou Rabineaux, and still no one can explain the events of that dark and sweltering night. No one except Niquette Delongpre, the survivor who ran away from the mangled stretch of guardrail on Highway 22 where the impossible occurred…and kept on running. Who left behind her best friends, Ben and Anthem, to save them from her newfound capacity for destruction…and who alone knows the source of her very bizarre—and very deadly—abilities: an isolated strip of swampland called Elysium.

An accomplished surgeon, Niquette’s father dreamed of transforming the dense acreage surrounded by murky waters into a palatial compound befitting the name his beloved wife gave to it, Elysium: “the final resting place for the heroic and virtuous.” Then, ten years ago, construction workers dug into a long-hidden well, one that snaked down into the deep, black waters of the Louisiana swamp and stirred something that had been there for centuries—a microscopic parasite that perverts the mind and corrupts the body.

Niquette is living proof that things done can’t be undone. Nothing will put her family back together again. And nothing can save her. But as Niquette, Ben, and Anthem uncover the truth of a devastating parasite that has the potential to alter the future of humankind, Niquette grasps the most chilling truths of all: someone else has been infected too. And unlike her, this man is not content to live in the shadows. He is intent to use his newfound powers for one reason only: revenge.

Review:

I’m stumped.  It’s not too often I have almost zero idea how to begin a review.  Hardest part of all?  My thoughts are coming across as fragments, or adjectives, more accurately (I realize I’m guilty of it myself — irony isn’t lost on me).  The Heavens Rise by Christopher Rice (*gasps*, it’s really, truly Anne’s son) was so…intriguing yet confusing…it’s hard to put into words what my final opinion of this book is.  Bear with me as I get the assembly line of my brain cranking…and construct said thoughts into proper, complete sentences.

Noah, Millie and Niquette (Nikki) Delongpre of South Louisiana vanished, leaving only scraps of their SUV as evidence of foul play.  A week later, Marshall Ferriot flings himself off a 31st floor, resulting in a permanent, vegetative state.  Coincidentally, he’s the person of interest Nikki’s BFF, Ben suspects, but Marshall’s been whisked away to Atlanta and is, well, unable to speak.  In The Heavens Rise, we go “backwards” — gradually introduced to pivotal characters whose personalities and background give rise to motive and ultimately lead us to conclusive pieces of the puzzle.  I followed the serpentine path (lots of snake references within) of events and revelations, but the unraveling of twists had me begging the girls to “Ask Dad!”, and simultaneously yanking out my hair during WTH reactions.  Billed as a supernatural thriller, it incorporates much more.  I did not expect mind control and monsters to play out and those elements are a huge departure for me.

In an impromptu romantic fail, throwing Nikki and himself in the pool of her new home (known as Elysium), Marshall and Nikki were exposed to a parasite of unforeseeable destruction whose properties “were the color of skin, and they were everywhere, clustered together in beige clumps that looked like shredded human flesh.”  Nikki only noticed the “swamp sperm” (she tactfully labels, NOT) when she desperately tried to get away from Marshall’s sexual assault in the water.

He had taken her by both shoulders and slammed her head into the side of the pool.

Total psycho, right?  This is a handsome, young boy from an obscenely wealthy family who gets girls “shitfaced” on Zima in order to have his way with them (perversely preying on the starved-for-attention “nerds” who were willing to allow him the use of implements and keep it secret).  Nikki’s rejection (even though Marshall was instrumental in her break-up with BF, Anthem) threw his obsession into overdrive:  a girl whose very name filled the remnants of his soul with sustaining rage.  Headaches, nausea, and other symptoms following the incident gain momentum and allow Nikki and Marshall the disturbing, not to mention intrusive, ability to absorb/control a person’s mind.

“It flows through you on a kind of conduit we can’t see.  The person completely loses all consciousness as a result…This is not possession.  You can’t see the world through their eyes.  The mind-control aspect…well, it’s just a by-product, you see.  A by-product of the fact that you can draw the person’s fundamental quantum material into your body by metabolizing part of it.”

Perhaps we can even add a bit of sci-fi to the book’s description?  I must say it bordered on the outlandish for me when the mind control theme was further explored.  While it may have explained the hows of it all, it couldn’t recapture my previous interest.  Perhaps it was the measured pace in which Mr. Rice addressed the parasitic effects that made me impatient?  This was unlike any other book I’d ever read; perhaps I was the only reader 226 pages in who needed more facts? 😀  A disjointed span of 8 years was also distracting when I had to re-read passages and/or look at the beginning of the chapter for clarification.  Nikki was the genesis behind Marshall’s fury, but her character wasn’t sufficiently fleshed-out.  We learn about the gaping hole her absence causes for her best friend and boyfriend, but…well, there’s just SO much more for you to discover.  I found it odd that Mr. Rice kept alluding to a “coupling” between Ben and Anthem; grief is brutal and can drive us to desperation, but I don’t know if Nikki would have approved?  Maybe we should ask Nikki?  WHAAAT?!  Invisible intervention like that of a guardian angel breathes new considerations.  I think we should tag the fantasy element to the list of themes touched upon in this book.

Seamlessly interwoven is an homage to Katrina, but with a bold emphasis on its neglect and racism of the poorer classes.  A brave and personal opinion to say the least!  The setting, the graphic details, they were deftly written and clearly Mr. Rice’s forte.  His honesty and imagery were quite evocative, adding another layer of depth to his narrative.  I was disappointed in the end because there was such a “negative” shift that sits uneasy in my mind.  If we’re fortunate enough to have Mr. Rice visit TRC, I’d love to understand his reasoning.  I won’t forget this book any time soon!

BLOODED (Jessica McClain series) by Amanda Carlson-a new release review

BLOODED (Jessica McClain series) by Amanda Carlson-a review

BLOODED -Jessica McClain series (a novella) by Amanda Carlson

BLOODED is the introductory storyline (April 2012 new release) to Amanda Carlson’s new Jessica McClain series. As the human-born daughter of werewolf alpha Callum McClain, Jessica has been the target of jaunts and threats since the day she was born. Werewolves never sired females, but Jessica was an anomaly. Now that every member of the pack knows she will never be able to shift, the Cain Myth is coming true. Foretold that the a female would be born as the ‘daughter of evil’, a ‘witch’, Jessica’s days are numbered. Believing the daughter of evil will bring an end to the wolves, the pack members have targeted Jessica for destruction.

Hoping to prove herself capable, Jessica challenges alpha-male Mitch to a fight. Although her father has been the alpha of the pack for over 500 years, Jessica knows that even his laws will not prevent her possible death. But her fight with Mitch only results in pissing off the other wolves. Surviving against the odds, Jessica has now put herself into a position as an even bigger target. But when Mitch’s friend Sean seeks to end her life, using more than just his abilities as a wolf, Jessica realizes it may be too late to save herself. This fight may be her last.

BLOODED is a great introductory story for Amanda Carlson. She packs plenty of information into a short story without overwhelming and burying the premise. A wonderful story with a kick-ass heroine who knows what it is like to be different. In a world shifters, a mere human is always a threat. I am looking forward to reading FULL BLOODED later this year.
