ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 13, 2013

The Third Daughter of the Queen wants her birthday to arrive so she’ll be free to marry for love, but rumors of a new flying weapon may force her to accept a barbarian prince’s proposal for a peace-brokering marriage. Desperate to marry the charming courtesan she loves, Aniri agrees to the prince’s proposal as a subterfuge in order to spy on him, find the weapon, and hopefully avoid both war and an arranged marriage to a man she does not love.

Third Daughter is the first book in The Dharian Affairs Trilogy (Third Daughter, Second Daughter, First Daughter). This steampunk-goes-to-Bollywood (Bollypunk!) romance takes place in an east-indian-flavored alternate world filled with skyships, saber duels, and lots of royal intrigue. And, of course, kissing.

excerpt 1

From Chapter One, Third Daughter (The Dharian Affairs #1) – steampunk fantasy romance

The cloudless night whispered sweet promises to Aniri.

Below her stone rooftop, the shadows of the forested grounds danced in the summer’s breeze, their small rustlings calling to her like a lover. The sound was the perfect cover for escape into the darkness and the warm arms she hoped to find there. No one should notice her absence. Of all the guards, handmaidens, and many silent keepers of the royal household, none would venture up to her private observatory this late in the eve. But she still had to be careful. Even this close to her birthday, the Queen would not be forgiving if she was caught.

Aniri scanned the palace grounds to make sure it was clear of any witnesses. The manicured lawns were empty: the only sign of life came from the distant embassy windows where gas lamps flickered and soft music trilled from late-reveling partygoers. Aniri pressed the leather eyecup of her aetherscope to her face, slowly turning the brass knobs to bring the party into focus. The instrument was meant for watching the rise of the twin full moons, but it worked well enough for spying on the Samirian ambassador and her assemblage of guests.

Their shiny new automaton was thick-legged and awkward, but the Samirian tinker’s design was still clever: the steam-driven mechanical wonder actually danced, albeit just one clumsy pirouette after another. When it came to a graceless stop, the guests snapped their fingers in appreciation. The faint sound of their applause drifted over the lawn, but the party continued on. With the grounds still empty, Aniri swung her aetherscope to the forest. The broken edges of the river snaked through the darkened trees, slipped under a stone bridge, and then flowed past the red sandstone walls of the Queen’s estate. A black shape darted out from under the bridge, then disappeared into the shadows between the trees.

Time to go.

About The Author

Susan Kaye QuinnSusan Kaye Quinn grew up in California, where she wrote snippets of stories and passed them to her friends during class. Her teachers pretended not to notice and only confiscated her stories a couple times.

Susan left writing behind to pursue a bunch of engineering degrees, but she was drawn back to writing by an irresistible urge to share her stories with her niece, her kids, and all the wonderful friends she’s met along the way.

She doesn’t have to sneak her notes anymore, which is too bad.

Susan writes from the Chicago suburbs with her three boys, two cats, and one husband. Which, it turns out, is exactly as a much as she can handle.

Just the way I liked it. That’s what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you — a completely skewed sense of reality. FREE SOULS (Mindjack Trilogy #3) by Susan Kaye Quinn-a review

FREE SOULS (Mindjack Trilogy #3) by Susan Kaye Quinn-a review

Free SoulsABOUT THE BOOK: When your mind is a weapon, freedom comes at a price.

The final installment of the Mindjack Trilogy is here!

Four months have passed since Kira left home to join Julian’s Jacker Freedom Alliance, but the hole in her heart still whistles empty where her boyfriend Raf used to be. She fills it with weapons training, JFA patrols, and an obsessive hunt for FBI agent Kestrel, ignoring Julian’s worries about her safety and repeated attempts to recruit her for his revolutionary chat-casts. When anti-jacker politician Vellus surrounds Jackertown with the National Guard, Kira discovers there’s more to Julian’s concerns than she knew, but she’s forced to take on a mission that neither want and that might be her last: assassinating Senator Vellus before he can snuff out Julian’s revolution and the jackers she’s come to love.

REVIEW:

The Mindjack Trilogy and its novellas are one of my favorite YA series this past year. Susan’s take on the Urban Fantasy/Dystopian genre delves into a world of what ifs-what if our drinking supply was so polluted with poisons that the human population developed various forms of mind-reading, mind altering and mind controlling abilities. And to complicate matters, those without any special ability declare everyone with altered minds as an enemy of the state. Big Brother never looked so evil.

Susan’s final instalment in the Mindjack Trilogy-FREE SOULS (released December 14, 2012) follows our heroine Kira-a young woman with abilities that far outreach many of the mind controlling powers of most of the people on earth-as she endeavors to reveal the truth behind the missing people and the involvement of government at every level. As part of the Jacker Freedom Alliance, Kira and the others risk their lives and the lives of the people they love to stop the politicians from wiping out the entire population of mindjackers-one person at a time-only now-the politicians have found a way to attack thousands of people all at once.

FREE SOULS and the MINDJACK TRILOGY is a well written, fascinating and wonderful series by Susan Kaye Quinn. There is plenty of action and reaction, suspense, and mystery. Many of the questions from previous storylines have been answered, but it wouldn’t hurt if Susan added a couple of novellas that tie into a few more of the members of the Jacker Freedom Alliance. Resolutions surrounding previous and new loves was anticipated and I liked how Susan didn’t complicate the ‘love-triangle’ potential-Kira is finally with the man who will cherish and treasure her for the rest of their lives-I love a happily ever after.

Early Praise for Free Souls

“Quinn paints a picture of a not-too-distant America where politicians inflame the hatred of once section of the populace for another–all for their gain–and you worry that her world is not so far off from our own.”–Dianne Salerni, author of We Hear the Dead, The Caged Graves, and the forthcoming The Eighth Day

Free Souls starts with a bang and doesn’t let up. Like a mash-up of all your favorite science-fiction adventures from Star Wars to The Legend of Korra, it blends nonstop action, nail-biting escapes, and great romance. I absolutely loved it! A great series conclusion—a must-read.”
Leigh Talbert Moore, author of Rouge and The Truth About Faking

“Susan did it again.  Free Souls was WOW!  I expected Kira to step up to her role as heroine but not like this.  Surprises kept coming until the very end which tied up more loose ends than I knew existed.  Warning:  Don’t start reading until you have time to finish.  I didn’t want to put Free Souls down for a second.  It’s that kind of book.” —Sher A. Hart, Goodreads Review

The Handler/The Scribe (Mindjack Trilogy e-novellas) by Susan Kaye Quinn-a review

The Handler /The Scribe (Mindjack Trilogy e-novellas) by Susan Kaye Quinn-a review

THE HANDLER (e-novella #2.1) by Susan Kaye Quinn

THE HANDLER is the latest e-novella release (August 2012) in Susan K Quinn’s YA Mindjack series. In a world where mindreading is the norm (due to decades of contaminated water) those without the ability are known as zeroes, but there are a few who possess a power greater than most. The Handler focuses on Julian Navarro and the characters introduced in Closed Hearts and takes place between Open Mind and Closed Hearts before Julian has ever met Kira Moore.

Julian can manipulate the instincts of the mind. Hoping to amass enough people to create an ‘army’ for the revolution, it is Julian’s belief that one day mindjackers would be the dominant species on the planet. But mindjackers came with all sorts of problems and abilities and Julian would meet a few in the early days of the revolution.

Along with his twin sister Anna, Julian would encounter a couple of new recruits that would hopefully become a part of his close circle of mindjacking specialists. But many of the mindjackers coming to Chicago New Metro (aka Jackertown) were forming lawless clans and were not capable of following orders and Julian was determined that Kira Moore, a revolutionary in her own right, would further enhance his stature and presence as a leader.

Julian and Anna would welcome two new recruits, but like most Handlers, they would have to learn to control their abilities. And it would soon become obvious that one of their recent additions to the Clan, was someone they did not want on their side. With Anna’s special ability, the new recruit would be re-assigned to a new location and Julian would continue his search for the best mindjackers his Clan required.

THE HANDLER is a quick and easy read that offers some background information into the personalities of some of the characters introduced in a previous storyline. Approximately 3 chapters in length, we become privy to the abilities of the mindjackers and the knowledge that they too, fear the power, that many of their own ‘species’ have developed. A great addition to the Mindjack series.

THE SCRIBE (Mindjack Trilogy enovella 2.2) by Susan Kaye Quinn

THE SCRIBE (Mindjack Origins 2.2) by Susan Kaye Quinn

THE SCRIBE is another short-story (August 2012 release) from Susan Kaye Quinn’s Mindjack Trilogy. In a world where mindreading is the norm (due to decades of contaminated water) those without the ability are known as zeroes, but there are a few who possess a power greater than most. This story takes place between Open Minds and Closed Hearts.

Sasha Rimbali has a power that he considers so evil that he is willing to die before he ever uses his powers again. Believing his powers are too destructive, too complete and too final, Sasha searches out Julian Navarro and his small Clan of mindjackers hoping to side with them in the upcoming revolution. The revolution that will see mindjackers as the dominant species, Sasha hopes that Julian will see a different side and not use Sasha’s power to control, punish or gain power against others. Sasha believes Julian will make a difference, but time will tell if Sasha or the others will survive without the use of his powers.

Sasha was a new changeling when Arlis (Sasha’s old mentor) discovered his unbelievable powers. Teaching Sasha how to control and use his powers was more than beneficial for Sasha but also for Arlis and his Clan. But recruiting Sasha to use his powers for control and punishment was something that Sasha could no longer tolerate-the nightmares were frequent and the guilt was too high.

Ava Trinkle is a viewer. With the ability to view at great distances, Ava’s powers will benefit the Clan when she is able to reach and read their enemy during the revolution. But Ava and Sasha have something in common, and it is their common thread that will unite the pair for more than just a battle-but perhaps in their hearts. When Ava is accepted into Julian’s Clan, Sasha will become Ava’s protector in more ways than one.

THE SCRIBE is another short story that introduces two more members of Julian’s Clan of mindjacking specialists. From the talented desk of Susan Kaye Quinn, The Scribe is another welcome addition to the Mindjack Trilogy.

CLOSED HEARTS by Susan Kaye Quinn-cover reveal

CLOSED HEARTS by Susan Kaye Quinn

CLOSED HEARTS (Young Adult)-Book 2 of the MINDJACK Trilogy by Susan Kaye Quinn

RELEASE DATE: May 23, 2012

The Reading Cafe will feature an interview (and reviews)  with the author Susan Kaye Quinn on May 31, 2012

When you control minds, only your heart can be used against you.

Eight months ago, Kira Moore revealed to the mindreading world that mindjackers like herself were hidden in their midst. Now she wonders if telling the truth was the right choice after all. As wild rumors spread, a powerful anti-jacker politician capitalizes on mindreaders’ fears and strips jackers of their rights. While some jackers flee to Jackertown—a slum rife with jackworkers who trade mind control favors for cash—Kira and her family hide from the readers who fear her and jackers who hate her. But when a jacker Clan member makes Kira’s boyfriend Raf collapse in her arms, Kira is forced to save the people she loves by facing the thing she fears most: FBI agent Kestrel and his experimental torture chamber for jackers.

********************MIND GAMES a review******************

MIND GAMES  (YA) (found in the anthology In His Eyes) is the prequel short story to indie author Susan Kaye Quinn’s new Mindjack Trilogy.

Background:  Sixteen-year-old Kira Moore is a zero, someone who can’t read thoughts or be read by others. Zeros are outcasts who can’t be trusted, leaving her no chance with Raf, a regular mindreader and the best friend she secretly loves. (susankquinn.com)

In a world of mindreaders, Kira is an anomaly. She has yet to enter the change and is unable to read the minds of her fellow students. But at the same time, her mind is a blank to anyone who dares to enter.  To be forever branded as a zero is not the title Kira wants. As the end of the school year approaches, Kira is hoping that summer vacation will usher in some new changes in her life.

Raf Santos is one of the most popular guys in school.  With the upcoming year end Gamesdance, Raf has only one girl in mind for his date, but the others have different plans that do not include Kira. When Raf’s so called friends threaten to harm Kira, Raf will make a decision that could hurt Kira and destroy their fragile relationship that appears to be unraveling day by day. Once best friends with Kira, Raf will have to face the consequences of his actions, when Kira may no longer be a part of his life.

Mind Games in the introductory short story in Quinn’s Mindjack Trilogy.  An interesting concept that includes the ability to read minds, hear thoughts and the isolation of those who have yet to attain status in a world governed by the reality of truths.  Without the ability to be read, the zeroes cannot be trusted-for fear they hold secrets.  A concept based in prejudices and stereotypes, I look forward to reading Open Minds-Book 1 and Closed Hearts -Book 2 in the Mindjack Trilogy.
