Rule number one for dating your best friend’s sister: Don’t.
Just don’t do it.
Especially when your best friend is dead and the last thing he made you promise him was that you’d keep an eye on his little sister, but not too good of an eye.
As a musician whose longest committed relationship was six weeks, I, Holden Catalano, was the last guy on Earth who should’ve been messing around with Laney Ellison.
The super smart girl whom I affectionately dubbed Lala since childhood was always off limits.
Though that didn’t stop me from thinking about her over the years, especially those times when the two of us would sneak out onto the roof and talk for hours after my buddy fell asleep. It was innocent, but I’d always held a torch for her.
After Ryan passed away, I vowed to always protect Lala. That included protecting her—from me.
Now all grown up and a scientist, Lala needed a place to stay when she accepted a temporary research position in New York. I thought I did the right thing by offering her an apartment in the building I co-owned with my three friends.
Except having her close by reignited all of those old feelings.
And things started to get complicated.
Especially since she was engaged.
And especially since, lately, I’d noticed something more in her eyes. Desire.
Lala didn’t exactly look at me like the platonic brother figure I was trying so desperately to be, even though I wanted her more than I’d ever wanted anything.
Yet, I was being good—on my very best behavior.
But you know what they say…all good things must come to an end, right?

REVIEW: THE RULES OF DATING MY BEST FRIEND’S SISTER is the second instalment in the contemporary, adult THE LAW OF OPPOSITES ATTRACT erotic, romance series co-authored by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward. This is drummer/building owner Holden Catalano, and medical researcher Dr. Laney ‘Lala’ Ellison’s story line. THE RULES OF DATING MY BEST FRIEND’S SISTER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Laney and Holden) THE RULES OF DATING MY BEST FRIEND’S SISTER follows the building romance and relationship between drummer/building owner Holden Catalano, and medical researcher Dr. Laney ‘Lala’ Ellison. Holden, Laney and her brother Ryan grew up together in Pennsylvania but eight years earlier Laney’s brother Ryan died leaving a hole in both Laney and Holden’s heart. Fast forward to present day, Dr. Laney Ellison is heading to New York for a medical presentation, and Holden has offered an apartment in the building he co-owns with several friends. Holden Catalano has been in love with his best friend’s sister for as long as he can remember but Laney is currently engaged to someone else, and Holden’s reputation as a manwh*re is well known to our story line heroine. As the days, weeks and months accumulate, the palpable sexual attraction between Laney and Holden is obvious to everyone, but Laney continues to battle between head and heart knowing there is somebody else left behind. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Laney and Holden, and the potential fall-out as Laney leaves behind the relationship she once knew only to face the possibility of no relationship going forward.
Laney Ellison has always felt something more than friendship towards her brother’s best friend but they haven’t seen one another for several years. Living side by side, always in one another’s business and life, Laney finds herself reconsidering her own future going forward, realizing that to settle means the possibility of losing the great love she will ever know. Holden Catalano has never stopped loving our story line heroine but her absence from his life meant she lived in a different world where he did not belong. Believing himself unworthy of our story line heroine, Holden is willing to sacrifice his happiness for the woman he loves.
The relationship between Holden and Laney is a best friend’s sister, friends to lovers relationship in which our couple must come to terms with what they both want going forward. Holden’s friends struggle with his need for and obsession over a woman who is supposedly in love with someone else, and Laney battles between head and heart knowing to fall in love with Holden mean to break the heart of someone else. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
We are reintroduced to Holden’s friends and building co-owners: Colby and his wife Billie (THE RULES OF DATING 1), Owen and Brayden, as well as Holden’s bandmates: Dylan, Monroe and Kevin. Laney’s parents, Bill and Jean Ellison, are witness to their daughter’s struggles with her attraction to our story line hero but know in the end, it is Laney’s decision with whom she will fall in love. Owen’s story line is next.
THE RULES OF DATING MY BEST FRIEND’S SISTER is a story of loss and acceptance, mistrust and miscommunication, friendships and relationships, family, and love. The character driven premise is emotional, thought provoking and inspiring ; the characters are animated and sassy; the romance is spicy and flirty.
