What price is a woman willing to pay to restore a man’s honor?

When her husband is falsely accused of treason and murdered, Isabelle de Caen vows to find those responsible and see justice done. Of royal descent, Isabelle is stunned when the king orders her hasty marriage to one of his favorites, a man she detests. To save herself from a fate too awful to contemplate, she disobeys the king’s edict and commits treason of her own to find the truth.

Childhood friend, Guy Poirier, an aristocrat in New France, has always loved Isabelle. When he discovers her hiding in his cabin aboard ship, he agrees to hide her from her fiancé and help her clear her husband’s name. It doesn’t take them long to realize there’s more at stake here than her husband’s murder. With the fate of the colony in their hands, can Isabelle and Guy prevent a war and find love in the new world?

•••••••••••••••••••

The Price of Honor is a historical romance set in the late 1600’s. It’s extremely interesting and is centered around France’s expansion to the colony of New France. For those of you unfamiliar with this term, like myself, that’s what is later named Canada (Quebec area).

Our heroine, Isabelle Gaudier, is a lovely young woman recently widowed. Her father has also just died and has been ordered by the King of France to marry a man she absolutely hates. Her cousin who lived with her family and resembles her greatly is to be shipped to New France as a bride for some soldier or settler there.

All this involves an intricate conspiracy which includes the murder of Pierre Gaudier (Izzy’s husband) and her father Comte de Caen (twelfth in line for the throne of France). A child of Isabelle’s could be in line to the throne…with the right executions. The intricacy that would make this work is astounding, but I’m quite sure is pretty accurate for the times. Additionally, in the conspiracy are some members of the French West India Company involved in trade in New France.

Our hero is a childhood friend of Isabelle’s, although she doesn’t recognize him immediately, Seigneur Guy Poirier. Handsome, a friend of her husbands, and still in love with her from childhood.

Those are the people, or most of them, involved. How she escapes marriage to a monster, and she, her cousin Sophie, and Guy all end up on a ship to New France is a well written and planned tale of ingenuity and daring. Along with this is the voyage itself, overcoming spies, plots within plots and the saving of New France.

This is an exciting well written story with descriptive and historically based information. It’s very hard, almost impossible, to put down. So, of course, I didn’t! Ms. Matthews is a very talented author with a marvelous gifted ability in storytelling. Do yourself a solid and pick this one up. Enjoy everyone, I did and hope she does more just like this.
