REVIEW: THORNS OF DESIRE is the fifth instalment in Eva Winners contemporary, adult THORNS OF OMERTA dark, erotic, Mafia romance series. This is forty-five year old Manuel Marchetti, and twenty-three year old, author/ singer Athena Kosta’s story line. THORNS OF DESIRE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Some of the events of THORNS OF DESIRE cross over with and run parallel to some of the events of Thorns of Death #3, and Thorns of Silence #4.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Manuel and Athena) using present day and memories from the past, THORNS OF DESIRE follows the building romance and relationship between our story line couple. Athena was only looking for a one-night stand but never expected to come face to face with a ghost from the past. As a young child Athena faced death in the most excruciating manner, and in the ensuing time, never forgot but betrayal was about to come full circle when Manuel discovers the Chinese Mafia also known as The Triad was targeting our story line heroine. As Manuel proclaims himself guardian and protector of Athena Kosta, secrets are revealed threatening any potential peace between the ruling factions of the crime world. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Athena and Manuel, and the potential fall-out as the ultimate betrayal places Athena’s life on the line, and Manuel sets into place a plan to destroy them all.

The world building follows several paths including the overlap between four relationships, all friends of our story line heroine. As the Russian Bratva begins to circle against the Italian Mafia, the Triads are taking aim for sins of the past.

The relationship between Athena and Manuel begins as a one-night stand but Athena begins to struggle with a familial connection. Manuel is a man almost twice Athena’s age, and in this his experiences and former lovers reveal a history that hits too close to home. Manuel is desperate to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love, and Athena knows that without Manuel, her life would be forfeit for someone else’s sins. The $ex scenes are provocative and seductive.

The secondary and supporting characters are desperate and questionable on many levels. We are introduced to head of the Bratva Atticus Popov, and his son Danil Popov; several members of the Chinese Mafia; Athena’s mother Alexandra Kosta, as well as the return of Dante and Phoenix (Thorns of Silence), Isla and Enrico (Thorns of Death), Raven. The requisite evil has many faces.

THORNS OF DESIRE is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, obsession and madness, acceptance and love. The character driven premise is intriguing, dramatic, dark and intense; the romance is bewitching and passionate; the characters are determined, dynamic, powerful and charismatic.
