Description:
Leah Giancarelli makes balancing her new role as a single mom look easy, but she’d have crumbled if not for her late husband’s best friend, Marcus. She has her issues with HORNET, an elite hostage rescue team—after all, Danny would still be alive if he’d never accompanied them on their last mission—but Marcus has always been by her side, a strong shoulder to lean on…

Until, after one impulsive kiss, he’s so much more.

Eaten alive by guilt, Marcus takes off, leaving both HORNET and Leah behind. Alone is easier. Safer. Because his feelings for Leah are all kinds of wrong, the worst kind of betrayal, and he can’t trust himself not to act on them.

But Danny’s death was only the beginning. Whoever hired the hitman is looking for something, and they think Leah knows where it is…

Each book in the HORNET series is STANDALONE:
* SEAL of Honor
* Honor Reclaimed
* Broken Honor
* Code of Honor
* Reckless Honor
* Honor Avenged

Review:

Honor Avenged by Tonya Burrows is part of the Hornet Novel series. If you haven’t read the other novel, Hornet is the name of the organization of mercenary operations taken on by this group. This is a good organization of heroes with military or enforcement service who take on operations. This is the story of Marcus Deangelo and Leah Giancarelli (the widow of Marcus’s friend Danny Giancarelli).

Author Tonya Burrows has written another fast-paced adventurous novel with exceptionally emotional entanglements. It’s beautifully written and this one is heart rending on occasion with the added burden of guilt over a building love between the hero and his best friend’s widow.

The Hornet organization is even more dynamic and interesting than ever. I love getting to know the characters and their back stories.

The friendship between Danny and Marcus was strong and with his death, Marcus struggled with guilt at having asked him to join Hornet. He’s driven to find the person that shot his friend but finding that person leads to more misunderstanding and guilt.

Leah is confused and angry. She thinks Hornet failed to protect her husband and got him killed. She doesn’t want anything to do with them, but finds she needs them. Learning what actually happened and why is a game changer.

I love the interactions and conversations. The experiences are seriously lifelike, and the writing is intense, and I simply can’t wait for more from this great author and her band of heroes.

I highly recommend you grab a copy of this latest addition and have yourself a wonderful read.

Review

Code of Honor by Tonya Burrows is a Hornet Novel. If you don’t know, Hornet is the name of the organization of mercenary operations taken on by this group. This is a good organization of heroes with military or enforcement service who take on operations. This is Jesse Warrick and Elena (Lanie) Delcambre’s story.

Author Burrows has written an excellent novel of adventure, danger, and reluctant romance. It’s well written with great fight scenes and conversations.

This wonderful group is as interesting as it is diverse. Most are heroic, if somewhat or sometimes dysfunctional. They do a serious and very dangerous job and often costs more than mere money can pay them to do.

You need to read the story to get the scoop on all the great characters and their relationships. They are interesting and very complicated. I don’t like to do spoilers but I will give you the gist and the setup of the beginning.

Jesse and Lanie were teenage friends with a lot of connection. A bit young for true love, but maybe not. However, Jesse managed to marry and have a son, then a divorce or two or four? Anyway, it’s been a lot of years and mileage, but Lanie has just come back into his life by training with Hornet.

Jesse’s at a very confusing and bad spot in his life. After years of getting it together, his ex-wife has sent his teenage son to life with him, basically because she doesn’t want to deal with him any longer. The son, Connor, thinks his dad doesn’t love or want him there. That’s not true, but he also knows his mom doesn’t want him around her ‘new’ family (a correct assumption).

Jesse wants Lanie with an almost uncontrollable need; she wants him pretty much the same way, but they’re fighting it with all they have. Neither thinks they’re right for marriage or love.

But things being what they are, they’re off to a training exercise with some recruits and some of the injured and older members of the team leading the way. Jesse allows his son to participate, after all, it’s only training. After the training, they’re headed for time in the sun as a reward.

Then all hell breaks loose at the resort. And I do mean hell…

It’s exciting, interesting, well-written and if you like military adventure and romance, this book’s a must read. I personally, am looking forward to many more of this author’s works. Yes, I’m now a fan!

It’s a relatively quick read and certainly hard to put down, so don’t!

Wilde at Heart by Tonya Burrows – a Review

Wilde at Heart by Tonya Burrows – a Review

Wilde at HeartAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
He has everything under control. Except her.

Reece Wilde put everything in his life on the backburner to protect his brothers and their struggling company, Wilde Security. With a major contract on the line, Reece can’t afford any mistakes…like getting caught in a red-hot, X-rated moment with wild child Shelby Bremer, who’s more trouble than he can handle. Now he’s being blackmailed.

Shelby’s mile-long impulsive streak gets her in more trouble than she’d like to admit. Between her sister’s wedding, her coffee shop set on fire, and getting down and dirty with the groom’s brother, things are definitely coming off the rails. With both their careers and their safety on the line, Reece is determined to keep them both safe…even if it means a Vegas-style shotgun wedding.

But gambling on a wild card—and a wild soul—is risky…and sometimes, it can get a guy killed.

Review:

Slam, bam, thank you, ma’am?! I’m familiar with the scenario, but this one packed a punch from the very beginning. Reece “worships” Shelby in spectacular fashion *steam emanated from my Kindle* only to be interrupted by his inside voice, the chiding one…and the flames licking at the ceiling of the very building where their tryst began! As far as warnings went, this was a doozie. If workaholic Reece loses himself in the moment, he stands to lose sight of the prize. Then again…perhaps Shelby’s heart is better than any professional advancement? Welcome back, Tonya Burrows! In Wilde at Heart, we revel in all that revolves around Reece and Shelby and this wonderful family dynamic. It is a joy to go Wilde again!

The last time Ms. Burrows made us swoon, Wilde for Her, Cam and Eva figured out that best friends made forever kind of love. With their nuptials just around the corner, Reece, the most dependable of the Wilde siblings, is dispatched to “oversee” impetuous Shelby (younger sister to Eva) and ensure she tamps down any overt vivaciousness that could prevent her from participating (or ruining) the wedding. Babysitter he’s not, Reece catches himself ogling from afar…fantasizing…hoping Shelby could ever consider him romantically.

“…she was completely, 100 percent anti-permanent. Hell, even her hair color changed every other week. Reece was the human equivalent of tattoo ink. She was henna.

They’re on opposite spectrums overall, but their differences are obsolete when they’re face to face. When magic happens and their sexy exploration is caught for all to see, their romance (intimate photos) becomes the subject of extortion. Someone out to sabotage the security firm or was it more personal, singling out Reece who stood on the precipice of financial gain?

“Of course, logically speaking, this was the perfect time to hit him with blackmail. So it had to be someone he knew…Someone who knew his government contracts were running out this year and he needed Irving James’s investment if he wanted to keep both DMW and Wilde Security afloat. Someone who knew one moral misstep on his part would bring everything he’d built crashing down.

     But who?

It only took me a minute to fall right back in love with this series, with this book, but a pivotal plot line, Reece and Shelby’s solution to “a whole host of problems”, impeded my enjoyment. Shelby is a bit of a hot mess and the beneficial (though mutual) agreement felt opportunistic. It was probably due to the intermittent telling of her background story, so it’s hard to point fingers when Reece was caught in his own desperate situation. Having said that, Ms. Burrows executes the storyline pursuant to her vision and the outcomes aren’t proportionally skeevy, lol. Far from it! I loved the coming together of such polar personalities. Together they stop running. Together they soar.

I adore the camaraderie between brothers who mask engaging verbal quips for intuitive insight. They worry after each other even while they rib each other mercilessly; they are devoted to their family unit. Ms. Burrows writes energetically, realistically, and passionately. I’m so happy I read this!

Ms. Burrows ties up all the loose ends plaguing our H/H and gives you an impactful finish. My heart suffered a bit, but that’s what a well-written story is supposed to do — I was thoroughly invested in Reece and Shelby’s development and was hopeful for a HEA. Clever author that she is, Ms. Burrows already planted the seeds for the next storyline. Ummm, yes…

More…I want more…I need to get Wilde some more!

Wilde For Her by Tonya Burrows – a Review

Wilde For Her by Tonya Burrows – a Review

Wilde For HerLinks to order Wilde for Her: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
Former homicide detective Camden Wilde has been in love with his ex-partner, Eva Cardoso, for longer than he cares to admit. Not that it matters. She’s shoved him into the friend zone, and after living through the hell of his parents’ violent deaths, Cam’s unable to give her the idyllic life she secretly desires.

Eva’s never met a person who hasn’t let her down. Cam may be sex personified, but he’s the only man she can trust, and there’s no way she’ll risk their friendship on the off-chance they could be more. Especially not after the one scintillating night she’s trying—and failing—to forget.

When a murder-for-hire contract on his head lands Eva on his doorstep, Cam knows it’s time to put up or shut up. He’s done biding his time, and he’ll be damned if he lets the delectable detective ignore what’s between them, no matter the cost.

Review:

Wait.  What was he thinking?  This kiss was a ruse.  It wasn’t real.  He was simply doing her a favor, being a good friend by helping her make her ex jealous to soothe her wounded pride.

Fuck, he really hated being stuck in the friend category.

Seems Wilde Security can handle a variety of matters — P.I. work is just their bread and butter.  Problem is this isn’t a job.  When Cam’s date/ex-partner/BFF, Eva, faces her cheater-ex (and his fiancé), Cam rushes in to assume the guise of lover and spare her embarrassment.  Bigger problem?  Cam’s genuinely in love with Eva and he can no longer deny it.  Fingers crossed hard-ass, and unapologetic, Eva feels the same way.  That kiss sure felt real!

We all know how temperamental we can be about sequels (imagine the stress of writing one!), but I was [beyond] eager to read about the second Wilde brother based on the wonderful family created by author, Tonya Burrows (debut novel, Wilde Nights in Paradise, can be read here).  Get ready to swoon for Cam in Wilde for Her

While I can devote an endless amount of time on Cam and Eva alone, we explore their background, make sense of their insecurities, and squirm (a lot) over misunderstandings, Ms. Burrows provides interesting subplots including a terrific thriller.  It still revolves around Cam, though, lol.  After a clandestine meeting with a loyal, but troubled informant, Cam discovers there’s a contract on his head.  “Some white dude.  Mean.  Nice clothes.”  has offered $1,000 to kill Cam.  Are you thinking what I am?  Clear your mind…he’s just one on Cam’s “long and varied” list of suspects.

The brother bond is deftly handled.  Suffering from their parents’ abrupt death, each Wilde sibling went into a different branch of the military and Ms. Burrows allows each story to unravel, unhurried, at its own pace.  The Wildes can fist-fight without hard feelings, open up through “cool bro talk”, but Burrows’ measured steps/writing, endear us to the family and keep us aware of particular torments unique to each brother.  PTSD is a recurring theme for this series and her research is an invaluable service to anyone close to the issue.

If I’m being critical, the hit on Cam, or rather its resolution, may have wrapped up too neatly, and co-workers falling in love isn’t exactly innovative, but when written earnestly, thoughtfully, like Ms. Burrows continues to demonstrate, it matters not.  This is not a cookie-cutter version of something you’ve already read.  Ms. Burrows creates characters that you want in your circle of friends (and certainly in a fight!).  She utilizes a subtle touch in an effort to gain sympathy for both Cam and Eva.  Before long, their “baggage” (we ALL have it) becomes personal and relatable to anyone who’s persevered and endured the highs and lows of falling in love.  Yes, many swoooon moments to linger in your system.  😉

I enjoyed Wilde for Her immensely and will read anything written by Ms. Burrows.  If my instincts are honed (I should work for Wilde Security!), then the fortuitous run-ins with a suddenly available woman should bring Vaughn Wilde front and center.  And since he seems to be the more stoic of the bunch, consider this my pre-swoon.  That book cannot come out soon enough.  Great read, Ms. Burrows!!!

Description:
He’ll guard her body all night long.

Former Marine Jude Wilde’s motto has always been “burn bridges and never look back,” so nobody is more surprised when Wilde Security is hired to protect assistant district attorney Libby Pruitt, the woman he loved and left. Although she makes it clear she wants nothing to do with Jude, they’re forced to fake a relationship for her safety. He can’t ignore the heat still simmering between them, and when her stalker’s threats escalate to attempted murder, he’s left with no choice but to whisk her away to a friend’s safe house in Key West, FL.

Cooped up in paradise together, Jude begins to chip away at Libby’s resolve to hate him. But even as she gives in to his proximity and her body’s demands for his, she refuses to fall for his charms again. Maybe a torrid affair in the sun is exactly what she needs to get him out of her system. But when her stalker tracks them down, can they escape the steamy Key West night without anyone getting hurt?

Review:
Wilde Nights in Paradise
, a Wilde Security Novel by Tonya Burrows was the best read – a perfect, sexy, summer read!  Jude Wilde “was the family fuck-up and he’d made his peace with that”.  A month out of the Marine Corps lands him in the family P.I. business …bored as hell…until his former colonel and would’ve been/should’ve been father-in-law (refer to f-up label), shows up to hire him as his daughter’s personal bodyguard.  Someone is stalking Libby, she’s the assistant district attorney, and the threats have escalated to menacing levels.  How the heck is Jude supposed to be professional when Libby wants to kill HIM for breaking her heart?  Laying on the charm…reminding/demonstrating moments from their passionate past…all solid ideas.  😀  I devoured this book!

The story begins in Washington D.C….8 years after Jude walked out of Libby’s life…2 days after proposing and putting a ring on her finger!  Who does that?!  It takes a loooong (but delicious and eventful time) to get to the truth.  When Jude shows up unannounced and dives right in for the feigned reconciliation (of course dad didn’t consult Libby on this genius plan), well hell hath no fury and all that!  Jude and Libby are shaken by their reactions to each other, but do their best to exude indifference (and suffer quietly).

“Personal feelings don’t factor into anything for you, do they?  You avoid emotion like leprosy.”

“Pretty much.  Emotion is messy.”

When push comes to shove (a car literally runs them down), Jude opts to take Libby out of town to a friend’s house in Key West, Fl., until the stalker is in custody.  Falling into comfortable communication isn’t easy; their exchanges are simultaneously hilarious and bittersweet because it’s easier to point fingers and be snarky than face the aftermath of their broken engagement.  A subject neither one of them will broach.

To be honest, the book then focuses on the tension of their living situation.  How can they continue to resist each other when they’re finding a new, healthy rhythm?  Broker an arrangement…or better yet, a plea bargain?

…”You robbed me of eight years of my sexual life.  You owe me one night.”

…”Just one?”

“Yes that’s all.  I’m tired of pretending I’m not still attracted to you.  Since we have to live together for the foreseeable future, I want to get it out of the way now.”…

”But, Libs, you’ve been doing it all wrong if you think one night will satisfy either of us.”

There…I’ve said too much!  At fewer than 200 pages, Ms. Burrows admirably delivers so many stories.  Jude’s relationship with his 4 older brothers is overflowing with love and misplaced anger that needs to be addressed (*sniffs*); Jude criticizes Libby’s conservative demeanor, but faces his role in that transformation; Libby finally gets her answers to Jude’s cruelty, but it creates new walls…I am leaving LOTS for you to discover and love.  Think of me when Jude reveals his romantic side with flowers…*sighs*…Oh, yeah, and the stalker culmination, too! 😀

I teased on goodreads about having to rethink my rating system after reading Wilde Nights because I gave it 5 stars…and had just awarded another book the very same.  I meant it both times.  Every story is unique and this one is no exception.  Ms. Burrows wrote a terrific book about honesty, regret, and discovery.  I even read the last scene to Sophia, my 11 year old, because their love story touched my heart.  She swooned, too.  I am crossing my fingers that Ms. Burrows has only begun to tell the story of the Wilde brothers.  Can they all be tamed?

“You should have put your swimsuit on.”

Resignation tinged her sigh.  “I was afraid this would happen if I did.”

“Hate to tell ya, babe, but this was gonna happen even if you were wearing chain mail.”

What are you waiting for?  Go get Wilde!!!

Guest Post

I love to travel.

Seriously, I get itchy feet if I stay in one place too long. My family now just rolls their eyes at me whenever I start talking about a new place I want to visit and/or move to. My current fixation is Florida. Sunshine State, here I come!

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always dreamed of seeing the world. I used to hunker down in the elementary school library with books about children from different cultures, fascinated by the glossy photos of girls with gold rings around their necks in South Africa and children releasing paper lanterns down a river in Thailand. I decided I wanted to be an exchange student in high school, and worked toward the goal until my junior year, when I spent six months living in Costa Rica. Since college, I’ve moved eight times in as many years because why stay in one place when there’s so much to out there in the world I haven’t seen yet?

But if there’s one thing I love more than seeing the world, it’s writing about it. To me, a book’s setting is more than a backdrop to the story—it’s a secondary character. It stages the tone and the mood of the book. (Who doesn’t love a steamy night at the beach? Or a cozy snowed-in cabin on a mountainside?) It can present obstacles to the hero and heroine. (Did I mention the snowed-in cabin scenario? That’s one heck of an obstacle.) It also presents unique difficulties to the writer, especially if said writer (me) has never been to Colombia (the setting of my first book, SEAL OF HONOR), or to Key West (the setting of my latest release, WILDE NIGHTS IN PARADISE).

I wish I could do on location research in each of the places I write about, and maybe someday I’ll be able to, but usually a lack of funds or time prevents me.  I do most of my research by reading books and looking at online photos and videos. In the case of WILDE NIGHTS IN PARADISE, I watched a ton of vacation videos on YouTube just to get a feel for the sights and sounds in Key West. For the sexy paddle board scene, I watched an online tutorial to learn the proper techniques. (Um, for paddling boarding part, not the sexy part.) I scrolled through cabin rental listing to see what the houses in Key West look like. I wandered Duval Street using Google Maps. I talked to people who have been there. Then, I crammed as much of my newfound knowledge about the place into the story as I could.

Sometimes setting research satisfies my wanderlust. Most of the time, it only intensifies it. So like I said before: Sunshine State, here I come!

Do you have a favorite setting to read about? Have you ever set down a book and thought, wow, I’d love to visit that place for real?

Big thanks to The Reading Café for having me today!

When I’m not writing, I spend my time reading, painting (badly), exploring new places, and enjoying time with my family. Give me a good horror movie over a chick flick any day. (And, let’s be honest, I’ll take a bad horror movie too!) I’m a geek at heart and pledge my avid TV fandom to Supernatural and Doctor Who. I’m also a big fan of The Voice. What can I say? Guilty pleasure.

I share my life with two dogs and a ginormous cat. We live in a small town in PA, but I suffer from a bad case of wanderlust and usually end up moving someplace new every few years. Luckily, my animals are all excellent travel buddies.
