ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 9, 2018

To escape a brutal killer, a brilliant researcher teams up with a tortured soldier who poses an even greater threat . . . to her heart.

Her sister might be the law and her brothers the brawn, but Riley Kingston is definitely the brains of the family. She’s a talented botanist well on her way to a PhD—so why does she feel like a failure? Fired from a dream project in Costa Rica, Riley’s stuck back in her hometown. Cataloguing plants on Steele land keeps her busy, but it’s far from compelling work. Until she discovers a fascinating new specimen. One with a body made for pleasure . . . and eyes filled with a pain she longs to understand.

Delta Force operator Coen Monroe doesn’t want to be studied. Not even by the sexy scientist whose inquisitive glances stir up desires he isn’t ready to handle. He came to Steele Ridge to be alone, to battle his nightmares and the memories triggering them. But Riley’s gentle seduction is as relentless as her curiosity. She soothes his wounded soul . . . and fires up his defensive instincts. But when her research sparks a deadly conspiracy, Coen is exactly what she needs.

When Riley is targeted by a sociopath bent on silencing her forever, Coen will do anything to protect her. But can he save the woman he loves without losing himself in the process?

REVIEW: SEARING NEED by Tracey Devlyn is the third instalment in the multi-authored STEELE RIDGE: THE KINGSTONS romantic suspense series-a spin off from the authors’ STEELE RIDGE series. This is ethnobotanist Riley Kingston, and Delta Force operator Coen Monroe’s story line. SEARING NEED can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment or original series is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: SEARING NEED contains scenes of graphic violence and torture, and may not be suitable for more sensitive readers.

Told from several third person perspectives including Riley and Coen, SEARING NEED follows the building romance and relationship between is ethnobotanist Riley Kingston, and Delta Force operator Coen Monroe. Riley Kingston’s life spiralled out of control when she was abruptly sent home in the middle of a Costa Rican research project. When her cousin Britt Steele offered her a job ‘cataloguing’ the local vegetation on the family-owned Steele-Shepherd Wildlife Research Center, our heroine never expected to run into a naked man, apparently squatting on the family land. Enter Delta Force operator Coen Monroe, and the man with whom Riley will fall in love. What ensues is the building but combative relationship between Riley and Coen, and the potential fall-out as Coen struggles with severe PTSD, and Riley’s past is threatening any chance for a happily ever after.

Three months earlier Delta Force operator Coen Monroe witnessed horrific atrocities on his last mission to South America, a mission where he lost everything including his peace of mind. Unable to move forward Coen was offered some alone time by friend and fellow soldier Reed Steele, at the Steele-Shepherd Wildlife Research Center, time Coen spent struggling with memories of the past. Running into Coen Monroe found our heroine more than intrigued about the who, how and why of Coen’s past but Riley Kingston never expected to fall in love with the damaged and broken Coen Monroe, love that will be tested when Riley’s past seeks something Riley doesn’t have.

The relationship between Riley and Coen is slow to develop as Coen struggles with social interactions as he battles the demons that control his life. Riley is determined to help the man with whom she is falling in love but sometimes the demons are too hard to control. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including Britt Steele and Randi Shepherd; Reid Steele; Gage Barber; Riley’s sister and local sheriff Maggie, and their brothers, Cash, and Shep aka Harris Kingston. We are introduced to Riley’s former co-workers Nick Landry, Dr. Hathaway, and Camilla; as well as Coen’s commanders General Delarosa and Colonel Walsh.

The world building focuses on the post traumatic stress of soldiers returning from war: their inability to let go of the horrendous atrocities witnessed, and the torture inflicted as prisoners of war. A heart breaking disorder with little to no cure, PTSD is central to Coen’s relationship with Riley, as our heroine struggles to accept the probability that Coen may be damaged for the rest of his life.

SEARING NEED is a raw, real and gritty story line of one soldier’s battle to get on with his life, and one woman’s endeavour to save the man that she loves. The premise is thought provoking and strong; the characters are complex, spirited and flawed; the romance is spirited and moving. SEARING NEED does not end on a happily ever after but on a happily ever after-for now, as our couple embark on separate journeys in an effort to move forward in their respective lives. The reveal as to the person responsible for the threats against our heroine’s life is predictable but entertaining, none the less.

The fox continued to watch them with unnerving stillness.

He swore. “Let’s make this quick.”

She nodded, flexing her fingers inside her leather gloves. Kneeling at the pit’s edge, she crooned to the frightened, trapped kit. “It’s okay, little one. We’ll have you out of there in a blink.” Looking up at Coen, she asked, “Ready?”

“I’m not the one going into a confined space with a rabid animal.”

“Not every wild creature is rabid. Sometimes they’re just scared.”

He studied her for the space of a breath before motioning to her to get into position. “What do you need?”

“Hold my ankles until I signal that I’ve got the kit, then pull like hell.” She placed the butt of the penlight between her teeth, and without another word, the botanist lay on her stomach, arrowed her arms into the hole, and slid beneath the earth’s surface.

Scrabbling to grasp her ankles, he couldn’t decide if she was one of the most fearless people he’d ever encountered or one of the most reckless.

She lowered her entire torso into the pit, which left him with a perfect view of her firm, well-rounded ass. Heat speared into his gut.

Reid’s cousin, Reid’s cousin, Reid’s cousin.

He forced himself to look away.

While he’d been preoccupied by the botanist’s assets, the adult fox had moved several feet closer. He tightened his grip around her ankles.

“Hurry up,” he demanded.

He received a garbled reply in return. Then the muscles in her calves tautened and her body jerked.

“Do you have it?” he asked.

More garbled words. She couldn’t speak with the damned penlight in her mouth.

“Do you have it?” he pressed.

She must have removed the flashlight long enough to bark out a loud whispered, “No.”

His attention whipped back to the adult sentinel. The fox now sat no more than ten feet away. Way too close for his comfort.

“Ten more seconds and then I’m pulling you out.”

He began the countdown in his head while he kept one eye of the fox. Once he hit ten, he said, “Time’s up.”

Riley began to struggle in his grip, but he dragged her out of the pit, inch by inch, his muscles flexing and straining. When her head cleared the opening, he held his breath, hoping he’d given her enough time to secure the kit.

She spit the penlight out of her mouth and used her free hand to raise herself into a kneeling position. Slowly her other hand cleared the pit and a small, red ball of fluff dangled above the ground.

The adult fox stalked closer, its black-socked paws taking measured steps toward its offspring.

“Set the kit down, Riley.”

“I need to first make sure it’s okay.”

“Set it down.”

She must have picked up on the tension in his voice, for she did as instructed.

They both watched as the kit shuffled away, panicking, before noticing the adult nearby. Body low, the kit beelined for the safety of its parent. The two touched noses before sprinting into the woods.

Watching the two foxes reunite helped banish the remnants of his nightmare. He looked to where Riley sat on the ground. Wisps of dark hair framed her flushed face, and dirt streaked her white tank top. Her breasts rose high with each excited breath.

Pushing her glasses up, she gave him a broad, joyful smile.

Something in his chest cracked.

Excerpt

Releasing a breath, Latymer moved from room to room, floor to floor, sifting through the evening shadows with painstaking precision. White linens draped every piece of furniture, making the once-happy atmosphere feel more like that of a dreary mausoleum. He saved Lydia’s bedchamber for last.

Had he been stronger, he would have gone there first, knowing if Giles had managed to find his way home, he would’ve sought the comfort of his mother’s chamber.
An instinctual response for any child, especially one who’d suffered so much. But Latymer’s courage began to flag the moment he placed his boot on the first stair. Although he could ignore the grief, he hadn’t been able to control the longing. After the French had kidnapped Giles and forced Lydia to spy on Somerton for them, he’d come here often. This house, their possessions, her bedchamber—the only links he had left to his lover and his son. Once he’d learned of her death, he’d stopped coming.

He stared at Lydia’s bedchamber door now, praying Giles was within. If he lost his son to the French, as he’d lost the woman he loved, not even Bonaparte would be safe from his vengeance. Turning the handle, he eased the door open and slipped inside. Low, flickering light caught his eye. “Giles?”

“No, darling, not Giles.”

Collette.

His heart sank like a bag of tarnished coins into his gut. How had she known to come here? Had she followed Giles? His gaze slashed around the chamber, searching for his son. Nothing, nothing, nothing.

The lamplight grew stronger.

“Looking for someone?” Collette’s bloodred lips tipped up into a taunting smile.

“Where is he?”

Sitting at Lydia’s dressing room table, Collette reached for a silver comb that lay next to a small pistol. She slid the hairpiece into her mass of dark locks, twisting her head one way, then the other, inspecting her handiwork. He’d given the comb to Lydia on her birthday five years ago. Seeing the special piece in his enemy’s possession sent fire streaking through his veins. She met his gaze in the looking glass.

“He?”

“Don’t play games with me, Collette. What have you done with my son?”

“We will get to him later.” She rose and turned to face him. “First, let us discuss the unfinished business you have yet to attend to.”

“There is no later. If you know where my son is, tell me now.” The steel in his voice drew forth two new bodyguards—one from the corridor and one from the dressing room—both as large as the last two he’d dispatched.

“It appears you purchase your brawn in bulk.”

Her eyes twinkled. “So much more convenient that way. Now, about that unfinished business . . .”

REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

There must be something about spies and regency romance that really turns my crank because every book I have read with this mix I absolutely enjoy. Maybe it’s the mystique, suppose to be proper but really bad ass under all the titles and manners .. I don’t know .. but I sure love it! Lady’s Secret Weapon by Tracey Devlyn is the third book in her Nexus series. I broke a huge reading rule of mine by reading the third book in a series before the first two. I am kind of obsessive about reading things in order and anticipating secondary characters future story lines. As I had just been introduced to the characters in this third book, I did feel a little like I missed something (I was going to give this book a 4.5 out of 5 for that feeling but it’s not the authors fault I didn’t read the first two), but that being said I am sure a non obsessive series reader may feel like they didn’t miss anything. Again this is my own personal “reading rule” and I like to see past characters make an appearance and have that warm feeling that they found their happy.

So a brief setting … London, early 1800’s, the Nexus organization is a group of individuals who become spies to combat Napoleon’s effort to take down England. Each spy brings something different to the table, and in this story our main man Ethan is the master of seduction for information. At the beginning of the book, we find Ethan seriously injured and a cloaked woman secretly attending to him. Months pass and Ethan is eager to find out who this woman was. Shortly after being given a mission to find a missing orphan boy, he comes across a woman who not only seems to have an invested interest in the young boys orphanage he is surveying, but is setting off bells of familiarity in his head.

Sydney runs a business that enables the ton to find employees that will suitably match their employer, while playing a part in the underground spy circuit. She uses her proper lady cover to infiltrate the orphanage and is shocked at what she discovers. Then there is this hot rogue that seeks her services and now she can’t stop thinking about him (she is our cloaked lady and is fearful that Ethan will recognize her). Before they know it, Ethan and Sydney begin to work together in the joint effort to take down a French spymaster and an English traitor (I guess this traitor has reeked havoc in the beginning of this series as well). While fighting the bad guys, they also fight their passion for each other.

So these two are well matched. Both a little sassy and eager to fight the bad guys while figuring out a mystery that will unravel big secrets, I loved reading our naughty Ethan’s troubles of seducing Sydney. I mean this is what he does! I loved reading Sydney play the cool cucumber in Ethan’s presence while the blood was boiling just underneath the surface. When this tension breaks …. FANS MYSELF! LOL

Love a regency romance full of secrets, action, lust and love? Check out A Lady’s Secret Weapon. I am going to rewind and read the first two books now. Maybe I’ll enjoy the “know what has already happened” aspect of this series as opposed to what I am use to!

Historical romance

The Popularity of Historical Romance

First off, big thanks to The Reading Café for having me today. I look forward to chatting with everyone.

As a reader, I have always gravitated toward historical romance. I love many of the other subgenres of romance, but historical will always be my fav. Why? I think it has something to do with how careful men were with the women. How they protected them, honored them, praised them, though sometimes to a fault.

I love my independence and would never truly want to be transported back to Regency England. Much of what we read in historical romances is romanticized fiction. Women in the early 1800s had little say and few means of expressing themselves. Widows would be the one exception.

But in historical romances, authors take great enjoyment in breaking the social mores of whatever time period in which they’re writing. Or, at least, I know I do. Makes for terrific conflict between the characters, especially the hero and heroine.

Thanks to Hollywood, historical romances are becoming more popular than ever. Yes, you heard that right.

Historical drama = historical romance

Behind every great movie/TV series set in pre-World War II times is a heart-tugging romance. Consider these movies/TV series:

    • Last of the Mohicans
    • Robin Hood
    • Braveheart
    • Game of Thrones
    • Pride and Prejudice—all the Jane Austen adaptations!
    • The Mummy
    • Troy
    • 300
    • Princess Bride
    • Bram Stoker’s Dracula
    • Van Helsing
    • Shakespeare in Love
    • Young Victoria
    • Patriot
    • Dances with Wolves
    • Titanic
    • Downton Abbey
    • Jane Eyre
    • Ever After
    • Upstairs Downstairs
    • North and South
    • The Tudors
    • Rome

Every single one of the above dramas keeps the viewer in a state of anticipation. Will they? Or won’t they?

Like historical romance novels, movies and TV series open up a whole new world for the viewer—costumes, scenery, speech, customs, weaponry, manufacturing, politics, etc. As I see it, the main difference between historical romance novels and Hollywood historical drama is how they end. Romance novels guarantee the reader a feel good ending. Hollywood not so much, though many movies do have a satisfying conclusion, but it might not be the one we expected.

I also think many of today’s historical romance novels are moving firmly into “you can’t go there” territory. Authors are taking greater risks, making their stories darker, more suspenseful, more emotional, faster paced.

The most technologically advanced automobile of today will have to undergo a facelift in 3-5 years. Same goes for romance novels. In order to keep readers’ attention, authors must adapt to the changing needs of their audience. It’s exciting—and terrifying—and I love the challenge of upping the scale each time I write a story.

What am I missing? Share with me your thoughts on why historical romances are on the rise. What makes you gravitate toward historicals?
