Description:
In 1891, Tilly Kirkland is reeling with shock and guilt after her tempestuous marriage ends in horrific circumstances.  Fleeing to the farthest place she knows, Tilly takes a job on Ember Island in Moreton Bay, Australia, where she becomes the governess to the prison superintendent’s precocious young daughter, Nell.  Tilly knows she must keep the past hidden in order to start a new life, but she doesn’t know that Nell is watching her every move and writing it all down, hiding tiny journals all over their rambling manor home.

More than one hundred years later, bestselling novelist Nina Jones is struggling to complete her next book.  A reporter asking questions about her great-grandmother sends Nina retreating to her family’s home on Ember Island, where she hopes to find her lost inspiration somewhere in the crumbling walls.

Though they are separated by years, both Tilly and Nina must learn that some secrets never stay buried, but what matters most is learning to trust your heart.

Review:

Ember Island is the first novel I’ve ever read by Kimberley Freeman and it was a wonderful story to read.  Nina goes to Ember Island to clean up the mess left behind from bad renters and bad weather.  And she is running from her terrible case of writers block that has her struggling to write her next book.  Nina’s great-grandmother was Nell, the young girl that Tilly became governess to.  Nina had discovered several of Nell’s writings and as the house was being repaired, she finds more of Nell’s writings in the walls.  She is taken back in time as she reads Nell’s words and she scours the house looking for more.  Nina has hired Joe to repair the home and as they get to know each other, sparks start to fly.  But Nina has a secret that she thinks will ruin any chance she has with Joe, so she pushes him away before anything can get started.

As Nina is dealing with life on present day Ember Island, Tilly is dealing with her own issues one hundred years before.  Tilly is a bright, spunky girl that has the misfortune to be married to a jerk named Jasper.  Tilly loved her grandfather very much and was devastated when he passed away.  Right before he passed, Tilly had married Jasper but her grandfather became ill at her wedding so when Jasper returned home, Tilly stayed behind to care for him in his last days.  After the funeral, Tilly goes to Jasper, ready to live happy ever after.  What she discovers is Jasper is not what he appeared to be.  After a horrible accident, Tilly runs away to Australia and finds a job as a governess to Nell.  Nell and Tilly quickly become attached to each other and Tilly begins to feel at home in her new life.  But lurking behind every corner is the threat of her past being discovered and destroying the life she has began to love.

What a lovely story this was to read.  I loved how the two time periods were mingled together like one story couldn’t be told without the other.  With each turn of the page, I was drawn deeper into the story and enjoyed reading how all of their lives unfolded years part.  This book has plenty of surprises and the story ends in an unexpected way that had me reading the last page with a smile on my face.  I highly recommend reading this book and I can’t wait to read more from Kimberley Freeman.

Miranda sneaks home after a long absence, determined to avoid her former fiance. But Hunter wants far more than his old role as brother-in-law-to-be. Abundant Christmas spirit, matchmaking mothers, and hometown holiday celebrations conspire against Miranda’s plans for a quiet, at-home Christmas. Her heart doesn’t stand a chance.

••••••••••••••••

When I was a kid, I loved reading Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House on the Prairie books. This Christmas story reminded me of that time. This was a very romantic Christmas story, complete with horse and buggy rides in the snow, playing secret Santa to deserving families and the type of love story that will weather any storm.

When Miranda thought she had found her happy ever after with Warren, she is stunned when he ends their relationship on their wedding day. She leaves town for three years, trying to recover from the embarrassment and the lose of her love. She decides to come home for the holidays although she is apprehensive about seeing Warren. What she didn’t expect was Warren’s brother would be the one to show her what love really is. Hunter has loved Miranda for years but never told Miranda out of respect of his brother. But now that Miranda is back and he has a chance to love her, he refuses to let her get away.

This is a very sweet and romantic story. It’s perfect for Christmas time and has the happy ending that we all love to read about.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 2013

Remorse…
All Sean Kincaid wanted was to use his Special Operative skills to bring a domestic terrorist to justice. But he left a trail of bodies in his wake: foes, colleagues – and an innocent woman. Now he’s pursued by enemies while desperately searching for a way to make amends.

Revenge…
Deirdre Monahan was expecting a happy afternoon with her cousin Anna. But she found a corpse abandoned like trash – and no one who could tell her why. Now Deirdre’s looking for answers and bent on giving whoever killed Anna the gift of knowing Deirdre’s pain.

In Ashes, Sean sacrificed everything. In this thrilling sequel, there will be… a Reckoning.

•••••••••••••••••

Reckoning by Kelly Cozy is the second book after Ashes. If you read my review of ASHES, you would know how much I loved that story. My review ended with me yelling at my e-reader because the story was over. I would’ve given anything to have more pages to read the way that story ended! I honestly didn’t think Reckoning could be as suspenseful and attention getting as the first book. I was so glad to be wrong about that. Reckoning was another roller coaster ride of suspense and intrigue, just like Ashes. There are more characters, more twists and turns to the plot, more action…..you name it, it’s in Reckoning.

Sean Kincaid did what he wanted to do, he brought a domestic terrorist to justice. But the trail of bodies he left behind had him feeling remorseful and determined to make amends. He had hurt innocent people in the process of the journey and all he wanted to do was make it right, if that was even possible. Deirdre Monahan was devastated to find her beloved cousin Anna dead. Who could do this and why? She was determined to find Anna’s killer and bring a little justice of her own. Sean and Deirdre are on a collision course to meet and change each other’s lives forever.

It’s so hard to write a review for this book and not give away too much of the story. I loved it. LOVED IT. I never knew what was going to happen next, the plot twists were amazing. Kelly Cozy brought in more characters and spun the story in such an intriguing way. I could not even try to predict what would happen next. How is it possible to feel sorrow and empathy for the killer that Sean Kincaid is? It’s possible when you have a storyteller that can weave such a magic web with words. I’ve always been a “romance” reader. Give me a guy, a girl, some action and a happy ever after and I’m content. Kelly’s books have greatly expanded what I want to read now. I would’ve never thought I would love reading “keep you on the edge of your seat” books, but these stories have changed that for me. Kelly Cozy’s writing gets a high five, two thumbs up and a huge fist bump from this reader. I will be a fan of Kelly Cozy forever.

Amid a whirlwind of escalating events, Susanna’s traumatic past threatens Robert’s ability to protect the one woman meant for him. In a harrowing moment, as her fears and demons coalesce, will hope, faith, and love be enough to save them.

Review:

Bound by Wish and Mistletoe is a holiday novella in Kat Bastion‘s Highland Legends series.  This is a great Christmas story, wrapped up in the magic of Castle Brodie and the enchanting sparkle of Christmas celebrations.  Susanna MacEalan is on the run, running from an abusive father who has promised her in marriage to a ruthless man.  Susanna has been taught all her life that men are not to be trusted because all they do is hurt women.  She vowed to her mother that she would get away and she is making good on that promise.
Susanna runs right into the arms of Robert Brodie.  Robert had sworn off women, he was sick of the shallow women that constantly pursued him.  But when he met Susanna, his manly world was turned upside down.  He knew she was not like the other women and he wanted to claim her for his own.  Susanna is terrified to trust anyone within Robert’s clan.  The only person she trusted growing up was her mom.  Once she is introduced to everyone, she is blown away by the kindness she receives.  She didn’t know what a real family was like and Robert wants to show her.  But he has to prove to her that he can be trusted and that he won’t turn into a horrible, abusive man.

This novella moves along quickly, never a dull moment.  That’s what I love about Kat’s writing, there is never any pages that I want to speed read through because it’s boring.  She writes her characters with such emotion that they come to life.  I really enjoyed Robert and Susanna’s love story, the passion jumped off the pages.  Bound by Wish and Mistletoe was the perfect blend of Christmas magic, romance and the real meaning of family.  What a great second edition to Kat’s introduction to the Highlanders, Forged in Dreams and Magick

Description:
Isobel MacInnes wakes up in present-day California, lunches in medieval Scotland, and by ten days’ end, falls in love with a man and his country, only to lose them in a heart-wrenching twist of fate . . .

Found in the arms of her second soul mate . . .

Forced to balance the delicate strands of time between two millennia . . .

Shocked by revelations rewriting the very foundations of history . . . of everything.

Isobel, a rising-star archaeology student, is dropped into two ancient worlds without warning . . . or her permission. Her fiery spirit resists the dependency thrust upon her. Amid frustration at her lack of control, she helplessly falls in love. Twice.

She struggles to adjust to the unimaginable demands of two leaders of men—a laird in the thirteenth-century Highlands and a Pict chieftain in a more ancient Scotland. Isobel transforms from an academic, hell-bent on obtaining archaeological recognition, to a woman striving to care for those she loves, and ultimately . . . into a fearless warrior risking everything to protect them.

Review:

Isobel MacInnes is an archaeology student that finds an amazingly ornate box after she veers off the road to avoid a flock of sheep.  She was excited because she thought she had found something that would propel her archaeology career to new heights.  Little did she know that she would be propelled into another time and place.  Twice.

While Isobel was at the archaeology department, waiting to show her professor the box, she met her Highlander friend there, Iain Brodie.  Ohhhh what a man.  Isobel was so attracted to him she could hardly stand it.  She had invited him to the department so she could show him the box she found.  She thought he might know information about it because the box had the same symbols that she had seen Iain wear on his Scottish plaid. One minute they are discussing the box, the next he is kissing her.  Their hands accidentally touch the box and they both get transported to thirteenth century Scotland.

WOW. I need to find a magical box like that……..just sayin’.

Considering that Isobel just got poofed into another time and place, she actually handles the news really well.  Iain knows a lot about the magical, time traveling box but he doesn’t reveal what he knows right away.  He tells her the box has the power to help the lairds of his clan (Iain is a laird of his clan, by the way) find their soul mate.  Time travel. Thirteenth Century Scotland.  Soul mated with a sexy Scottish Highlander.  Hmmm.  Interesting.

Isobel spends the next days absorbing all about Iain, his clan and his castle. She falls for Iain and loves being with his family in Scotland.  They marry and Isobel feels like she has found her home.  So you know what that means???  Time to mess things up!  Isobel touches the box again and gets zapped through time and wakes up still in Scotland but during the ancient reign of the Picts.  A loooong time ago.  No Iain.

She meets Velloc and in the beginning she resisted him but eventually she fell in love with him.  Apparently the box poofed her to Velloc’s time to be HIS soul mate.  Isobel is in love with two men.  She doesn’t want to choose between the two but she doesn’t even know if she can get back to Iain, but she has to try.  Ok, that’s all I’m saying about the story, I don’t want to give too much away.  Now here’s my review of the book.

I love Highlander stories.  Hunky men, soul mates, forever love……every young girl’s dream.  The time traveling made the story really interesting. I’ve read other Highlander books where the Highlander time travels or has lived for centuries, but never where the heroine gets to time travel. The most unusual part was Isobel having two soul mates.  It’s such an unexpected element and it made me realize that I had no idea what to expect as I turned each page.  Isobel is a strong character and handled traveling through time like a champ.  She’s tough and she fights for her men. The writing is so descriptive, Kat made it very easy to picture the scenes as I was reading.  This was a great story that I enjoyed very much.  Who does Isobel end up with?  You’ll have to read and find out!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 5, 2013

As a moonwulf, Daciana never expected to fall in love with a human. Hell, she never imagined that she’d abandon her pack, endanger everyone around her, and break the worst rule possible. But she did.

A rogue werewolf is killing Daciana’s friends, and she sets on capturing the creature. She’ll do whatever it takes to stop the beast. The police and her boyfriend, Inspector Connell Lonescu, are starting to question her involvement in the murders, which is endangering the pack’s secret existence. But when the pack alpha kidnaps Connell, revealing the awful truth about the creature and its connection to the pack, Daciana must choose between saving the man she loves and saving her pack family from certain death

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: Daciana just wanted to have a normal life. She had lived a year in the city and fallen in love with the man of her dreams, Connell. She wanted to live a happy, normal life with him. But there was one problem that Connell didn’t know about. She was apart of a pack of wulfkin. Currently, she was a moonwulf but in a few days, she would go through the change that would make her a full blown wulfkin forever. Daci was on a mission to find a potion that would stop this permanent change. How could Connell love her if her found out what she was? In her quest to find the information that she needed, she was spending a lot of time away and Connell was becoming distant. Then the people close to Daci started to die from attacks of a forbidden breed of animal called a dracwulf. Daci had to figure out what was going on and protect everyone she loved.

Daci had hidden all the details of her pack life away from Connell. How could she make him understand and accept what she was? She thought it would be an impossible task. That is why she teamed up with Radu, a fellow wulfkin, to help her find a way to stop the change. Once the attacks began, her focus had to shift from her research to protecting her pack and her boyfriend from this monsterous creature. She was afraid to tell Connell the truth and the lying caused their relationship to unravel. Daci’s future was getting more unpredictable with each passing minute.

I really enjoyed this book, there was so much action and storyline packed into each page, never a dull moment. If you like reading about wolves and shapeshifting, this is the book for you. All of the characters played such an important role throughout the story. Daci is not a whiney, wimpy woman character. She is brave, tough and willing to protect her own, no matter the cost.

Interview

TRC: Hi Tania and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of CLOAKED IN FUR.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Website / Goodreads / Twitter / Facebook / Pinterest

T.F.WalshTania: I emigrated from Romania to Australia at the age of eight and now lives in a regional city south of Sydney with my husband. Growing up hearing dark fairytales, I have always had a passion for reading and writing horror, paranormal romance, urban fantasy and young adult stories. I balance all the dark with light fluffy stuff like baking and traveling.

TRC: You were born in Romania but now live in Australia. Have you ever had a chance to return to your country of birth? What are your thoughts?

Tania: I haven’t returned yet… but I really want to. I want to go back and see where I grew up, visit my family and do a tour of the town where my book is based – Brasov ☺ I really want to take hubby back there and show him the country.

TRC: How has your Romanian heritage and roots influenced your storyline concept or writing e.g. (historically, geographically, names etc)?

Tania: Absolutely. Cloaked in Fur is based in Romania and I used my knowledge of the country, it’s cultures and beliefs to make it as real as possible for the reader. Romania is probably not a travel destination for a lot of people since it is a long hike, so when people read Cloaked in Fur, I wanted them to feel like they were right there, experiencing what my characters experienced.

Cloaked in FurTRC: CLOAKED IN FUR is your August 2013 release written in the paranormal genre. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

Tania: As a moonwulf, Daciana never expected to fall in love with a human. Hell, she never imagined that she’d abandon her pack, endanger everyone around her, and break the worst rule possible. But she did.

But when the pack alpha kidnaps Connell, revealing the awful truth about the creature and its connection to the pack, Daciana must choose between saving the man she loves and saving her pack family from certain death.

TRC: The storyline features a strong female protagonist. What or who influenced your decision to write a story/series featuring a strong female lead rather than the male driving the storyline?

Tania: I’m a bit believer that females can do anything, and as such, I didn’t hesitate to have Daciana be the strong female lead in this story. The men in her life are also strong so it only makes sense she can stand up to them and look out for herself.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series or is this a stand alone? If you will continue the series, will all of the characters and storylines overlap?

Cloaked in Fur logoTania: Cloaked in Fur is book 1 in a longer series, and so far I’ve planned out up to book 3. Each instalment will be from different characters’ POV, but set in the same world with similar storylines and familiar characters. As a sneak peek, book 2 will be about Enre, who plays a big role in book 1.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties did you encounter on the road to publication?

Tania: Learning the craft was a long journey, but completely worth it. I wouldn’t change a thing because that’s who I became a writer. The other hard part was learning to deal with criticism on your writing… I’m definitely getting better at it☺

TRC: When writing a storyline, do your characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Tania: A bit of both. I tend to set the path for my characters initially. We all know where we want to end up, but once I start writing, my characters do deviate at times. I love it when that happens because it pushes me to explore new ideas I hadn’t previously considered.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Tania: Foreshadowing. I love leaving crumbs of hints and red herrings along, but I find the trick is to never give away too much until it’s needed.

TRC: Are you a plotter or a panster (write by the ‘seat of your pants’)?

Tania: Plotter. My pages and pages of outlines can attest to it ☺

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

Tania: I love using deep point of view… this means the reader is right inside the characters’ head, knowing everything they know, feeling everything they feel as it happens. It’s quite an intrusive approach for the poor character, but what better way to sympathise and understand them. I think stories that don’t offer such insight cheat readers of really getting to really know the characters.

TRC: Many writers bounce ideas with family and friends. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Tania: I have a fantastic critique group and writing friends who read all my stories before I would consider publishing it. I can’t recommend enough for writers to join a critique group for sound advice on their stories.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Tania: Right now, I’m plotting book 2 of Cloaked in Fur. I’m also half way through a new young adult fantasy novel, which is made up of three parts about six characters. It is set a world filled with witches, steampunk monsters and magic, and at the heart of the story, there’s the struggle to find love.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Tania: Just a big thank you to everyone who’s read Cloaked in Fur and enjoyed it as much as I loved writing it.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Released March 2013

Anonymous. That was Jennifer’s life. But when she survived a domestic terrorist attack and her last-minute escape became the iconic image of the event, that life was over. Wanting only to disappear and become just another face in the crowd, she cashed in on her unwanted fame and moved to a small town, hidden away and safe.

Retired. That was Sean’s life. A former covert operative – the kind the government denies exists – he’d been pushed unwillingly into a life of suburban peace and quiet. But his retirement ended when he saw Jennifer’s rescue; from then on he only wanted to find those responsible for the attack, even if it meant turning rogue.

What Jennifer and Sean will both find is that nothing goes to plan, and their paths will cross in a way neither could have foreseen.

Ashes is the first in a two-book suspense series

•••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: HOLY SMOKES! Ashes by Kelly Cozy had me glued by the first few pages! This has been the most suspenseful story that I have read in a long time. The story begins with Jennifer Thomson going to work on a typical work day in Los Angeles, talking with her co-workers and making her way to the copy room to make copies. Then her building explodes. She has to fight her way through death, destruction and a collapsing building to get out. She walks past co-workers that she had just spoke with that are now dead. She was the only survivor in her department. Unbeknownst to her, the image of her being carried out by the firefighter was splashed across the nation, making her an instant hero.

All the way across the states in Florida, Sean Kincaid watched the catastrophe unfold as millions of Americans did that day. He was an early retiree, living in Florida, living a low key life, trying to blend in and not be noticed. He was a former covert operative, he performed secret missions and caused plenty of death and destruction of his own. Watching this news unfold wasn’t a big deal for him until he saw Jennifer emerge on the tv screen amidst all the dust and debris. This woman touched something inside of him and he had to help her.

Now, this is where I thought the story would be about how Sean travels to find Jennifer and help her heal and they fall madly in love…..you know, typical romance stuff. Nope. Not in this book. What unfolds is one of the most interesting books I’ve read in a while. Sean decides he must find the persons responsible for this attack and bring them to Jennifer so she can serve up her own type of revenge. Using his skills that he learned in his former job, he begins his journey of investigating and tracking down who committed this crime. Meanwhile Jennifer struggles with returning back to a normal existence. She decides to relocate to a small town where hopefully no one would know who she is and begin a new life. It takes her a very long time, but she begins to function and make a happy life for herself. But just when she begins realizing how happy she is, Sean barges into her life, declaring how he has captured the person responsible for the bombing and presents the person to Jennifer to seek her revenge.

Keep in mind, Jennifer never knew Sean or that he was going to do this, so she’s terrified, shocked, scared….. you name it, she’s feeling it. So here she is, looking at the bomber, the person who altered her life forever. Sean has given her a gun and tells her do whatever she wants. Oh what to do???? What to do????? She makes a choice. And guess what? That is where the book ends. NOOOOOOOOO! What happened? What did Jennifer do? I have no idea! OMG, it was the best cliffhanger EVER! I was reading this on my e-reader, I swear I turned the e-reader over, looking for more pages. The last sentence says “The story continues in Reckoning.” Well, I do believe I will be reading Reckoning very soon. People, read this book. I was very brief on my descriptions because I didn’t want to give too much away. There is so much that happens within those pages and my review would never do the book justice. READ IT!

TRC: Hi Kelly and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of your new novel ASHES.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow Kelly: Website / Goodreads / Twitter

Kelly CozyKelly: I’ve been in love with books literally since I was a baby. When I was a toddler I wouldn’t nap, so my Mom would put me in the crib with a few books, and I’d be perfectly happy for a good hour. I wrote my first short story when I was 9, and I’ve been writing ever since. Ashes is my second novel. My debut novel, The Day After Yesterday, is contemporary/women’s fiction.

I’m married with one child, and live in California. I love to cook, and my favorite time of year is the fall and winter holidays, when I can make big meals for my family and friends.

I’m also more than a bit of a nerd – I write movie reviews for the Horrorview.com site, and I’ll be at San Diego Comic-Con later this month.

TRC: ASHES is your March 2013 release. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

AshesKelly: In the opening chapter a Los Angeles federal building is bombed, and Jennifer Thomson, a young woman who works as an admin, is the last person to make it out of the building before it collapses. The whole world is watching her last-minute escape, and this makes her into the icon of the event. Jennifer’s life is overturned not just by the trauma of the attack, but by survivor guilt and her unwelcome celebrity, so she moves to a small town in British Columbia to start life over.

One of the people watching her escape from the building is Sean Kincaid, a former covert government operative who’s been in unhappy retirement for the past few years. Jennifer’s plight moves him and, when his request to rejoin his agency is denied, he decides to go rogue and not just find those who perpetrated the bombing, but to bring them to Jennifer so she can mete out justice personally.

TRC: Are any of the characters or situations in the storyline based in reality or an amalgamation of your imagination and current headlines?

Kelly: The federal building attack had its inspiration in events like Oklahoma City and 9/11. I didn’t want to write about those incidents specifically, but about the effect an event like those (or any catastrophic event, like a natural disaster) could have on a survivor, particularly in this era when the media is so ever-present and intrusive.

TRC: There is a second storyline planned for ASHES and your leading characters. Would you like to tell us something about the premise?

Kelly: The second book is titled Reckoning. Without spoiling things for those who haven’t read Ashes yet, by the end of Ashes Sean has done some things he’s remorseful for. He’s looking to make amends, while other characters – some we’ve met in Ashes, and some new to the story – are bent on revenge, or on manipulating the situation to a personal agenda. It’s very much about the ripple effect of Sean’s actions in Ashes. For me, Reckoning is probably the most enjoyable of my books in terms of storytelling. I’m looking forward to publishing it this November (in print and ebook).

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Kelly: I usually start a book with the major characters and the basic storyline, including the ending, in mind. But as I write and develop the story, I also learn more about the characters. There ends up being a balance between me moving the characters into situations, and the characters telling me how they deal with those situations. If a character “tells” me that he or she wouldn’t react a certain way or do a particular action, I respect that. Above all, I believe in being true to the characters, and if a storyline would require a character to behave out-of-character, I change the storyline.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (historical, research, logistics) did you encounter writing this particular story/series?

Kelly: I don’t usually write outlines, but this book necessitated an outline because of the alternating chapters between Jennifer and Sean. I wanted their story and character arcs to parallel and mirror each other. I also had to ensure that the timeline of the story worked, as it was necessary for Jennifer to have reached a certain point in her life before Sean finally entered it.

In terms of research, because the group responsible for the attack is a domestic terrorist group, I had to do a fair amount of reading about these groups – their objectives, their structures, their goals. That was a bit unsettling, to say the least.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Kelly: I have a group of friends and fellow authors I refer to as my Constant Reader Brigade. They read my manuscripts and give me their feedback. What makes this group so invaluable is that each person brings their own perspective: one is very detail-oriented and finds little errors, another gives me feedback on how well the story flows. And they’re not afraid to tell me when something doesn’t work.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Kelly: How well a plot works is always very difficult for me to assess, because I know where it’s heading. I try to see the situation through my characters’ eyes, because that’s the perspective the reader will get. Also, I rely on my Constant Reader Brigade to tell me if the foreshadowing works, if something that was supposed to be a surprise is a surprise, and if it all works. If the majority of the Brigade members say, “I’m not buying that,” I go back and rewrite.

TRC: How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of deadlines while still having time to raise a family?

Kelly: Having a schedule helps. If I know that Monday is my evening to work on a current project, it helps me get into the zone. I also give myself time to just relax – the beauty of being a writer is that the work is fun, but it is still work. Oh, and having lots of coffee on hand helps, too.

TRC: What are your thoughts on book reviews-good or bad?

Kelly: Reviews can tell you what about your story works, and what doesn’t. Bad reviews can be difficult to read, but it’s important to read them and see if the criticisms can make your future writing stronger.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Kelly: In addition to getting the Ashes sequel ready for publication, I’m working on a book of movie reviews (mostly genre films). I’m also laying the groundwork on research for a historical novel.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Kelly: Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about my work! And I hope people enjoy reading my books as much as I enjoy writing them.

The Greek gods never actually existed. Did they? Sophie Darrow finds she was wrong about that assumption when she’s pulled into the spirit realm, complete with an Underworld, on her first day at college. Adrian, the mysterious young man who brought her there, simply wants her to taste a pomegranate.

Soon, though she returns to her regular life, her mind begins exploding with dreams and memories of ancient times; of a love between two Greeks named Persephone and Hades. But lethal danger has always surrounded the immortals, and now that she’s tainted with the Underworld’s magic, that danger is drawing closer to Sophie.

REVIEW:

Persephone’s Orchard…….what a wonderful book. Molly Ringle builds a beautiful world of true love, wrapped up in Greek mythology. Sophie Darrow leaves home and goes to college where she is “kidnapped” and brought into the spirit realm to meet Adrian. Adrian has to convince her he is not a crazy stalker and he has a purpose for bringing her into this spirit world. Adrian is an immortal and he has shared several lifetimes with Sophie as other people. In the spirit realm, Adrian wants Sophie to eat a pomegranate, which will bring back all of her memories of their past love. Adrian refuses to live for eternity without her and she is faced with choosing between her current, mortal life or an immortal life with Adrian. As she remembers her past, it exposes her to a group of crazies that want all of the immortals dead. The journey through Adrian and Sophie’s previous lives unfold in a wonderful story.

The writing is so descriptive it feels like you are with the characters, living every memory right along with them. This story is beautifully written and intertwined with the Greek Mythology of Hades and Persephone. There was not one dull moment is this book, every page wove the story of Adrian and Sophie, linking their past with their present. There is so many parts of this story that I could talk about but one of the most moving for me was the Underworld. When Adrian first connected with Sophie, one of the things he used to intrigue her to come back to see him was being able to see her deceased grandfather in the Underworld. The Underworld is where the soul goes when it dies and stays there until reincarnated into a new life. The souls fly around and Adrian could talk to them, but couldn’t touch one. Sophie returns to see Adrian so she can see her grandfather and it’s a emotionally beautiful reunion.

I thought this was such a lovely element to the story because we all have that hope of seeing our loved ones again. Persephone’s Orchard will sweep you off your feet and leave you wishing that the story was real.
