FALLING LIGHT (Game of Shadows #2) by Thea Harrison

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 4, 2014

Having finally reunited, and fought off The Deceiver for now, Mary and Michael race up the Michigan peninsula to meet Astra before police forces catch up with them. But the closer they get, the less Mary is willing to trust a woman who by her own admission will do anything to finish The Deceiver – even if it means killing Michael and Mary to try again in another life. As they face their final battle unsure if they can trust either side, Michael’s loyalties are tested, making him vulnerable just when Mary needs him most.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: FALLING LIGHT is the second instalment in Thea Harrison’s contemporary, urban fantasy Game of Shadows series. Falling Light begins at the same point where Rising Shadows (book 1) left off. Michael and Mary have survived their encounter with The Deceiver and need time to heal. Following their instincts, our couple make their way to Astra for a few hours of rest only to discover that the Deceiver has left a mass of death and destruction in his wake with all fingers pointing to Mary and Michael as the guilty party.

Thea Harrison pulls the reader into a dark and stormy storyline where good and evil play a deadly game of cat and mouse. Following centuries apart Michael and Mary have found one another again and must face The Deceiver in a fight to the death. As Michael and Mary prepare for battle, Michael’s mentor is ready to sacrifice our couple for a chance at The Deceiver once again.

FALLING LIGHT and the Game of Shadows series is a bit of a departure from Thea’s paranormal Elder Races series. Urban Fantasy storylines are darker; less romantic; with fewer happily ever afters and in this, Falling Light fits the mold of a UF novel. The storyline is slow to develop as our couple makes preparations for the upcoming battle. Much of the storyline is spent ruminating about the past; their current situation; and the potential for betrayal from someone they trust. Mary’s powers grow in strength as Michael’s faith in the woman he loves begins to waiver but in the end they will pull together to meet The Deceiver-head on.

Thea Harrisons writes from the heart-you can feel the emotions and the pain with every plot twist and storyline turn.

Falling Light is not a standalone storyline. Click HERE for our review of RISING DARKNESS (Book 1).

King HallAbout the book: Release Date August 2013

King Hall — where the Mysticals go to learn their craft, get their degrees, and transition into adulthood. And where four new Rulers will rise and meet their destinies.

Lily Ruckler is adept at one thing: survival. Born a Mystical hybrid, her mere existence is forbidden, but her nightmare is only about to start. Fluke, happenstance, and a deep personal loss finds Lily deeply entrenched with those who would destroy her simply for existing — The Mystical Kings. Being named future Queen of the Shifters shoves Lily into the spotlight, making her one of the most visible Mysticals in the world. But with risk comes a certain solace — her burgeoning friendships with the other three Prodigies: a wicked Vampire, a wild-child Mage, and a playboy Elemental. Backed by their faith and trust, Lily begins to relax into her new life.

Then chaos erupts as the fragile peace between Commoners and Mysticals is broken, and suddenly Lily realises the greatest threat was never from within, and her fear takes on a new name: the revolution.

REVIEW: KING HALL is the first instalment in Scarlett Dawn’s contemporary, new adult paranormal Forever Evermore series focusing on a group of four ‘Mystical’ prodigies (vampire, shifter, mage, elemental) who have been blessed or ‘cursed’ by bloodline or connection to take their rightful places as the ruling Kings and Queens of the paranormal world. As the final year of school comes to an end, our foursome will be thrown into a war, not of their making. The Commoners (humans) want to rid the world of the Mysticals (supernatural beings) and they will start with the destruction of King Hall on graduation night.

Scarlett Dawn pulls the reader into a storyline that follows four twenty-something adults as them embark on a year of vigorous training, magical manipulation and mind numbing studies. We watch as strangers become friends and with it the realization that without one another they are lost. Working together, they are a powerful combination and in the end, it will be the individual losses and heartbreaking truths that will bring them closer together.

KING HALL is labeled a new adult storyline but reads similar to many YA (young adult) stories and series. There is a familiarity about the premise ala House of Night and even a little Harry Potter thrown in for good measure. Our foursome will encounter discrimination and retribution from humans while struggling with their own identities as future rulers in a world on the brink of war.

There were a few plot points that felt unnecessary including the opening sex-ed for supernatural beings-it was uncomfortable and felt forced-as thought the author was trying too hard. There were many humorous and funny as well as some heartbreaking moments in the storyline. Their mentors and current Kings put our foursome through some pretty tough tests but in the end, there were not prepared for hell that rained down on their happy celebration.

As a new author, Scarlett Dawn has written a wonderful and seductive storyline that will be sure to please the paranormal fan in all of us. The sexual heat is minimal-most of the action is implied or after the fact- and in this it reads closer to YA. There is a bit of a cliff hanger-one that has our foursome on the run- and in this you know, that together they will survive everything and everyone that is thrown their way.

King CaveABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 1, 2014

The safe, comfortable world of Lily Ruckler and her fellow Mystical Kings and Queens is rocked to the core by the attacks at King Hall. Not only does Lily have to kill the Commoners attacking her people, she also has to assume the mantle of leadership, and bring the surviving Mysticals to King Cave.

It should have been too much, but she is not alone. Ezra becomes her rock, her best friend, the one person who understands. As Pearl and Jack struggle with inconsolable loss, Ezra and Lily work to keep the Mys community safe in their new home, and plan a deadly retaliation.

Their friendship saves them both…but it also draws attention. Whispers. Judgment. It’s not normal for Shifters and Vampires to be friends, and when a horrifying truth is revealed, their relationship morphs from unusual to unspeakable. Lily is good at keeping secrets that could get her killed. Is she willing to risk Ezra’s life as well?

REVIEW: KING CAVE is the second instalment in Scarlett Dawn’s contemporary, new adult, paranormal, UF series-Forever Evermore. The primary focus of this instalment is on two Mysticals –Shifter Queen Lily and King Vampire Ezra –and the upcoming war between Comms (Commoners) and the Mys (Mysticals). It is believed that breeding between the species results in beasts of unknown powers, and therefore the Comms are going to war to prevent the supernatural powers from ‘infecting’ the human race.

As with all supernatural and paranormal societies, there are rules and regulations about interacting with other species or breeding outside of the group. In this, the storyline takes on a dark and foreboding premise. Lily and Ezra’s relationship will become tabloid fodder for the Elders and the reigning Kings, but a relationship that is about to put everyone at risk including the couple themselves.

Scarlett Dawn pulls the reader into a storyline of heartbreaking sorrow and shredding grief. No one is safe when death comes looking for a fight-a fight that death wins over and over. This is an adult storyline, with adult images and adult pain and suffering. There are moments of humor that are offset by betrayal and hatred to be followed by the horror of death and everything it has to offer.

KING CAVE is a well-written, amazingly detailed and energetic story about prejudice, stereotyping and speciesism. Ancient and archaic rules once meant to protect will throw the new generation of ruling factions into a war with the humans and among themselves. Lily and Ezra will be caught between love and duty and, in the end, everyone will lose when the final spell is cast.

The secondary characters are a necessary and colorful addition to the storyline with well-developed roles that add suspense, cruelty and questionable behavior.

Scarlett Dawn blends the paranormal with the mundane resulting in an imaginative storyline that is as dramatic as it is intense. This is a story of betrayal and pain; heartbreak and sorrow; prejudice and hatred; love and loss. Lovers of both the paranormal and urban fantasy will be pulled into a story where love and hatred ride a very fine line where one misstep results in the staggering realization that maybe it was never meant to be.

The Spider (Elemental Assassin #10) by Jennifer Estep-a review

The Spider

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 24, 2013

For the first time, the origins of Gin Blanco’s career as the deadly assassin “the Spider” are revealed in full. In a story that pre-dates the other nine books in the series, Gin Blanco goes through her paces to become the most feared assassin in the Ashland.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE SPIDER is the tenth full length storyline in Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series and one that focuses on ten years in the past. Jennifer takes the reader on a reflective ride following one of Gin’s biggest mistakes and regrets. When a bouquet of black roses is delivered to Gin at the Pork Pit, The Spider begins to reminisce about the past and the one time in her life she can never take back.

The Spider follows a time when Gin was too quick to jump to conclusions and in doing so hurts the very people she is trying to protect. Still training under the direction of Fletcher Lane, Gin takes control of a contract hit that was never intended to be anything other than a job. But soon Gin will find herself falling for the wrong man and with it the realization that not everyone or everything is as it seems. Knowing she has made a monumental error in judgment, Gin is forced to do the only thing she can-take out those responsible for setting her up to take the fall.

Jennifer Estep’s signature style of Gin’s first person POV brings the reader up close and personal with one of the most feared assassins in the fictional town of Ashland. Many of the Elemental Assassin’s secondary characters play a small role including Gin’s first encounter with Owen; Jo Jo and Sophia; Finn and the late Fletcher Lane; and a brief glimpse at someone Gin had long since thought dead. The storyline will go full circle from present day to a decade earlier then back to the future where Gin knows that there is never enough she can do to right the wrongs from so many years before.

THE SPIDER is a story that delves deeper into the ‘who’ and the ‘what’ that is Gin Blanco-The Spider. We watch as a young, lonely and naïve Gin falls victim to a socio-pathic killer and the results will push our heroine into a world of pain and regret and a world where she will forever be looking out for a young girl whose life was torn apart by the actions of the woman who thought she was saving the world.

Jennifer Estep pulls the reader into a storyline of betrayal and pain; love and hate; and a world of supernatural beings, who one way or another, will make their presence known-from the past to the present and beyond.

FIERY EDGE OF STEEL (Noon Onyx #2)- a review

Fiery Edge of Steel

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK; Release Date May 2013

Lucifer and his army triumphed at Armageddon, leaving humans and demons living in uncertain peace based on sacrifice and strict laws. It is up to those with mixed demon and human blood, the Host, to prevent society from falling into anarchy.

Noon Onyx is the first female Host in memory to wield the destructive waning magic that is used to maintain order among the demons. Her unique abilities, paired with a lack of control and reluctance to kill, have branded her as an outsider from her peers. Only her powerful lover, Ari Carmine, and a roguish and mysterious Angel, Rafe Sinclair, support her unconventional ways.

When Noon is shipped off to a remote outpost to investigate several unusual disappearances, a task which will most likely involve trying and killing the patron demon of that area, it seems Luck is not on her side. But when the outpost settlers claim that an ancient and evil foe has stepped out of legend to commit the crimes, Noon realizes that she could be facing something much worse than she ever imagined…

Noon Onyx series

REVIEW: FIERY EDGE OF STEEL is the second instalment in Jill Archer’s dystopian Noon Onyx urban fantasy/post-apocolyptic series.

BACKGROUND : Archer’s series focuses on the simmering truce between Angels and Demons 2000 years after Armageddon , and the destructive nature of the Maegester and their dark ‘waning’ magic. But for 22 year old Nouiomo Onyx (aka Noon) a reversal of fortunes has occurred at her birth-she was imbued with the dark waning magic (once only accorded to men) and her twin Nocturo (Night) was the waxing magic (once only accorded to women). Women were the creators not the destroyers. Noon’s ability to wield waning magic will become both a curse and a blessing.

Fiery Edge of Steel premise falls quickly on the heels of Dark Light of Day when our heroine Noon Onyx has been given the unenviable task of tracking down a killer and bringing him or her to justice; a potential rogue demon who has murdered numerous men and women in a small fishing village hundreds of miles away. The investigation will determine innocence or guilt and it will be up to Noon to mete out justice or the sentence when all is said and done.

Jill Archer takes the reader on a journey through hellacious swamp lands and black waters infested with numerous demons and magical creatures from childhood nightmares. The storyline is awash in mythical legends and lore once believed to be the foundation of many spiritual systems of belief. The world building continues to be aggressive, involved, detailed and dramatic. Any lull in the action will be countered with a renewed construct of Archer’s imagination.

Saying that, the storyline and premise are infinitely detailed with a spiritual belief system that rivals any religious construct or history and, is used to build upon the world of which Archer continues to create. The characters are colorful and many mask their true identities and purpose. The relationship between Noon and Ari continues to grow but will be met with a force so destructive that their love may never survive. As their journey proceeds, so too, do the threats against Noon and her companions as they search for a murdering demon.

Jill Archer brings originality to a genre that can get bogged down in the supernatural but the magic with which she weaves her story will pull the reader into a world of gifted angels and terrifying demons. But not all is as it appears in the world of Noon Onyx. Sometimes even demons can be an angel in disguise.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 29, 2013

Angels are falling from the sky in New York, struck down by a vicious, unknown force.

Vampires are dying impossibly of disease.

Guild hunter Elena Deveraux and the Archangel Raphael must discover the source of the wave of death before it engulfs their city and their people, leaving New York a ruin and Raphael’s Tower under siege by enemy archangels.

Yet even as they fight desperately to save the city, an even darker force is stirring, its’ chilling eyes trained on New York…and on Raphael. Rivers of crimson and nightmares given flesh, the world will never again be the same…

•••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: ARCHANGEL’S LEGION is the sixth full length novel in Nalini Singh’s contemporary paranormal/UF series-Guild Hunter. The storyline focuses once again on the Archangel Raphael and his consort and lover Elena. There is a war on the horizon-a genocide brought about the Cascade-and Raphael’s territory is the target. When angels fall from the sky by the hundreds and a blood born disease ravages the vampire numbers in New York, Raphael suspects another Archangel has plans for his demise. With his city under attack, Raphael begins to experience a power surge of epic proportions. Is Raphael the victim or the recipient of omnipotent powers?

Nalini pulls the reader into a storyline that will see friends and family fall in a war between the Archangels and their troops. A mysterious pox like disease threatens the vampire population while the zombie-like undead grow in strength and numbers. No one is safe from attack so Manhattan must be cleared of its’ residents leaving a ghost town where only the supernatural remain. Vampires will join with the angels to defend against a powerful enemy whose goal is to take down New York and Raphael’s control. But as one enemy attacks there will come support from a dark and dangerous unknown source, ensuring Raphael and Elena remain at the top of their game.

The relationship between Raphael and Elena continues to grow: their time together is sensual as well as sexually alluring and hot. Elena is the woman that keeps the Archangel’s heart and soul alive; but he is still the most powerful being on Earth and his word is law. Elena may be Raphael’s consort and lover, but she is still under his watch and command. While Elena grows into her powers, Raphael will have to stand back waiting for his ‘baby bird’ to take flight.

Nalini Singh has written a heart pounding, action packed storyline of love and loss; death and destruction; family and friends; intrigue and suspense. Many of the previous storyline characters are brought together in a battle for New York and the ultimate power and control. No one is safe from the evil that approaches and in the end help will come from a source as ancient as time itself and one that has sworn to protect the ‘aeclari’.

ARCHANGEL’S LEGION is a must read for fans of the Guild Hunter series and Nalini Singh. Plenty of background and historical information is revealed through dreams sequences, recall and shared memories. And in the end, it is one couple’s shared love for one another, that is the strength and power behind Raphael and the city he calls home.

Fifth Grave Past the Light

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 9, 2013

Charley Davidson may not look like your everyday, run-of-the-mill grim reaper, but she has vowed to reap grimness wherever she goes despite this unfortunate fact. Sadly, she gets sidetracked when the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, moves in next door. As he is the main suspect in her arson case, she is determined to stay away from him until she can find out the truth. According to her therapist, however, she lacks conviction.

When dead women start appearing in her apartment – lost, confused and terrified beyond reason – Charley has no choice but to ask for Reyes’s help, especially when it becomes apparent that her own sister Gemma is the serial killer’s next target. With his ability to observe incorporeally, surely he can find out who’s responsible. And even if he can’t, he is the one man alive who could protect Gemma no matter who or what came at her. But he wants something in return: Charley. All of her – body and soul. And to keep her sister safe, it is a price she is willing to pay…

••••••••••••••••••••

Charley Davidson Series

REVIEW: FIFTH GRAVE PAST THE LIGHT is the fifth installment in Darynda Jones’s paranormal/UF/romance/contemporary Charley Davidson series featuring twenty-something Charley Davidson-part time PI/part time grim reaper/ and full time love of Reyes Farrow-the son of Satan. Like all of the previous installments, Fifth Grave is jammed packed with humor, sarcasm, witty one-liners, t-shirt slogans, bumper stickers, murder, revenge and of course, more sex and romance with Reyes Alexander Farrow.

Fifth Grave Past the Light reveals plenty of information and answers some of our questions about the mysterious map and the key, both of which are believed to be residing on earth, awaiting their destiny. But the story surrounding the key to the map reveals the destruction of the world and in this, the truth may be stranger than fiction and the person who revealed the information is someone who has been to hell and back-literally and figuratively. He has the inside information from both Satan and his son.

Once again, Charley’s private life will be invaded by a series of spirits-twenty seven to be exact- who are drawn to her light as the grim reaper but for some reason, none of the woman are willing to move on until Charley uncovers the truth behind their murders. And it will take one small, young spirit, not much older than seven or eight to help reveal the person who may be the only one able to identify the person responsible. And in this particular case, he has a connection to Charley and her family. Oh, and someone recognizes Mr. Wong in the corner of Charley’s apartment. Let’s hope his presence and identity is finally revealed.

Cookie and Uncle Bob return as Charley’s confidants and aids. And Charley will need Ubie more than she ever thought possible when the person she was hired to tail turns out to be more dangerous than she had ever suspected.

Charley’s abilities come into question when local authorities take a look at her unbelievable record of solving cold case files and crimes. And the latest cold case to come across her desk is frighteningly familiar and heartbreaking.

The relationship between Reyes and Charley is romantic, sensual, hot and well worth the wait. Reyes, as the son of Satan, has never known love but he has found his soul mate in Charley Davidson-the one woman who is capable of putting out the fire that burns within. The romance sparks within the story as Reyes makes his feelings known to Charley and for him to make them a permanent couple will take some tricky dialogue and promises on both of their parts. Reyes is the epitome of sex on a stick; the ultimate lover and sensual male; he oozes sex appeal by virtue of his looks and presence; and it is Charley Davidson-the grim reaper who will capture his heart and his soul-forever.

Fifth Grave Past the Light is one of the best installments in the series thus far. I am still hoping that Darynda gives some life to Donovan and the Bandits and writes a series or at the very least, a series of novellas so that the reader can be kept up to date on their travels. Angel, Rocket, Garret Swopes, Gemma and Leland Davidson all play pivotal roles throughout the story. And the ending comes with a couple of surprises and not the least is the possibility of a new direction for Charley and Reyes.

Darynda Jones takes an UF/paranormal storyline and adds her sarcastic wit and humor as she pushes her series into another direction. The humor, the sensuality and the action filled storyline make this a must read for anyone who wants it all in the stories they read. Charley Davidson is a heroine who is strong yet feminine; heroic yet vulnerable; loved and yet hated by those she seeks to reveal. Fifth Grave Past the Light is an amazing and fascinating installment in Darynda Jones’s Charley Davidson series.

Stairway2 Heaven by Chaz Thompson-Review and Interview with the Author

STAIRWAY 2 HEAVEN by Chaz Thompson- Review and Interview with the Author

Stairway2 Heaven

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release November 2012

In the 22nd century, a burned-out, fatalistic psychic is blackmailed into recovering a stolen formula that separates the soul from the human body. Cerebral, acerbic, wry, profane, Stairway2 Heaven examines the relationship between consciousness and corporate religion and personal spiritual empowerment.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: STAIRWAY 2 HEAVEN is a sci-fi/futuristic fictional suspense novel that looks at the dirty side of corporate greed, big pharma and the philosophical/theological impact of separating the body and the soul. Whether you are a believer (or not) of all things spiritual or a version thereof, Stairway 2 Heaven will definitely make you think about the ‘what-ifs’ and ‘whys’ of the complicated Triad of big business, religion and medicine. And if you believe, you are like many skeptics, big business and medicine are inseparable and irrevocably connected to (and involved) in our daily lives.

The premise follows Matthias Chalmers, a retired psychic in the 22nd century and the fall-out of a research experiment gone horribly wrong–or right– depending on your view point, vantage or need. When Matthias’s twenty-nine year old son Lanier, a young man with Asperger’s Syndrome and a genius IQ ‘accidently’ separates his soul from his body while developing a new toothpaste for GORIS pharmaceuticals, Matt will become the pawn in a deadly quest for the ultimate prize.

The storyline is written from Matt’s POV covering various back and forth timelines and intersecting plots. We journey with Matt as he reflects on a lifetime of sins and the past indiscretions that got him to where he is today, all the while on the search for the elusive formula that has gone missing and presumably in the hands of someone close. With a price tag on his head and a target on his back, as well as threats against his family and friends, Matt will discover that even the Vatican is not exempt from the reaches of corporate greed and the possibility of life ever after-but the Vatican wants to destroy the procurer of the ultimate sin.

STAIRWAY 2 HEAVEN is awash in a philosophical and theological conundrum-if there is a way to separate the body from the soul, would you be willing to pay the ultimate price for a chance at a new life? Thompson’s writing pulls the reader into a storyline that will make you think about what really goes on behind the scenes of big corporations, medical research and the quest for the almighty dollar. Add organized religion and the Vatican-you have a story that will question the ideology of our society-who truly is in charge of our daily lives?

Stairway 2 Heaven reads like a movie-the reader is pulled into the fast paced action, the anger, the angst and the chase as Matthias Chalmers must find the stolen formula or face the possibility of his own death and the death of everyone he loves and knows. Chaz Thompson has written an amazing storyline that will fascinate as well as examine the possibilities of a pharmaceutical discovery that could change the concept of body, soul and life ever lasting.

TRC: Hi Chaz and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN. We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Goodreads / Facebook

Chaz Thompson 2012Chaz: Born in the very early ’50s I am now on the brink of retirement. I dropped out of high school in 1969 and literally joined the circus. Just one of those southern Californian, suburban street-corner Barnum and Bailey “mini” circuses, but a circus, nonetheless. They had me cleaning up after the elephants and I imagined a cinematic life of adventure. They promised me a place on the payroll if I showed up in the morning. I was seventeen. When I returned the following morning with my guitar, the street corner was vacant.

So I hitchhiked around, ended up in Wisconsin where I played clubs and pubs and the ever-familiar street-corner. When Disco arrived it killed my folk-singing, songwriting career, so I took a job as a clerk at the Madison Capitol building. This introduced me to graphics and I spent the next thirty years as a graphic artist.

Tell me when to stop. I married twice, fathered a handful of children (whom I adore to this day) and left graphics for a career in Real Estate at the exact moment of our recent economic meltdown. Hello customer service.

Along the way, I began writing screenplays and short stories and novels, and when the Self-Publishing boom developed I eagerly took advantage of the opportunity. Which brings us to today.

Stairway2 HeavenTRC: STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN is your latest release. A sci-fi, dystopian look at the 22nd century. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

Chaz: I understand STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN gets classified as dystopian, but I don’t really see it that way. I neither praise nor condemn our social future, and try to represent it as a mish-mash of advancements and setbacks. I chose the future simply because I wanted to control the environment in which this mystical event could occur.

TRC: Who or what was the inspiration for Stairway2 Heaven- the novel?

Chaz: About thirty years ago I wrote a short story called “Concrete Eden” which contained some of the basic plot elements and the focus of the soul becoming disengaged from the human body. Since I wrote many, many short stories, it got lost in the drawer with the rest. Back when Geocities was popular I dug out the story of the “soul-stealer” and posted it, but it wasn’t until early 2012 that I stumbled upon it and decided to flesh out the characters. I’ve studied mysticism and physics off and on, and found the premise ideal for combining my own observations on the two. I came up with a suitable ending and voila!

The title is actually a tongue-in-cheek formula that reads Stairway(squared) equals Heaven. The Stairway(squared) represents the link between our daily experience and our connection with divinity. It also implies it’s a two-way street, a notion frowned upon by most established religions.

TRC: What research challenges or difficulties (logistical, medical, theologian) did you encounter when writing this particular novel?

Chaz: Research was a combination of what I had studied on the subjects of mysticism and physics prior to writing the story, and acquiring knowledge of Europe for the events that took place there, specifically Italy, since I have never traveled overseas. I will be eternally grateful for YouTube and Wikepedia. I am inherently an impatient writer, so the challenge was to patiently describe the environments in a manner that would engage the reader and not slow down the narrative.

TRC: If you gave your leading character Matthias an opportunity to speak for himself, what would he have to say?

Chaz: Matthias Chalmers is a very jaded, fatalistic individual, but by the end of the story he has come to a place where he has to admit that if Life doesn’t always make sense, at least we do have some sense of control, whether we admit to it or not. And his basic summary of his experience are the final words of the novel. However, he might address the world at large with these words: “I love you all, but leave me alone.”

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about the storyline premise?

Chaz: That I am anti-Christian. Whereas I am certainly suspicious of the true motives of most corporate religions, every living consciousness deserves to benefit or suffer according to their own choices, physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually. I would never dream of encouraging anyone to abandon their commitment to their church or temple or whatever based on my personal beliefs. The events in STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN reflect a dramatic fiction meant to represent ideals and concepts.

TRC: Many authors bound ideas and information with other authors or family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Chaz: My wife and a select collection of very twisted friends. And the secret society of personalities between my ears.

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Chaz: My goals are very generic, looking out ten years. Fundamental happiness through the experience of success, expression of creativity, and love. Specifically, I hope to achieve these through writing and my personal relationships.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about yourself?

Chaz: That I am secretive, anti-social even.

TRC: If you could select one reality show in which you were one of the contestants, which show would you choose and why?

Chaz: Oh, I loathe reality programs. The best reality show is out my window. The thing is, a window is a two-way portal.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Chaz: My next novel is the story of the relationship between two prostitutes, one of them has an ability which can only be described as paranormal (there I go being secretive again), and the other woman is homicidal.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Chaz: STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN is my attempt to offer a unique concept to anyone brave enough to read the story. I recommend no specific doctrine of knowledge or behavior, just the willingness and enthusiasm to venture toward new ideas, to expand deliberately.

What’s a Serial and Why Would I Read One?
by Susan Kaye Quinn, author of a new future-noir serial called The Debt Collector

Debt Collector 1-3

A serial is a series of episodes – or short stories – that are connected to tell a larger story.

Must Read TV

Serials are actually a lot like a TV series, which themselves vary a lot in type. Series like Law&Order and House are more self-contained, with only a few character storylines carrying over from episode to episode. Series like Lost or Heroes would be difficult to watch out of order because the storylines carry more strongly, sometimes with cliffhangers, sometimes not.

Some readers like the week-by-week suspense of Must Watch TV; others would rather wait until the season is done and get it from netflix so they can watch it back-to-back. Likewise, some readers enjoy the suspense of reading a serial episode-by-episode as they’re released. Others would rather wait until the entire serial is complete and read it all at once. Either is fine!

Is a Serial a New Idea?

Ebook serials are a new thing, because ebooks are a new thing – but serials have been around since Charles Dickens wrote and released Great Expectations (self-published through his own literary magazine!) in 6,000 word “installments” every week for nine months. Readers today aren’t accustomed to reading in serial format because publishing serials was restricted to magazines, which didn’t have wide circulation. Now with ebooks, the cost of transmission is low and the distribution is wide. Ebooks have revived the short story form! But for readers raised on novels, who crave longer works and more in-depth stories, serials are the next natural step.

Is a Serial a Novel Cut Into Pieces?

No. A serial is not a chopped up novel, just like a TV episode is not a chopped up movie. It’s a different way of telling stories. In a way, it’s more demanding to write than novels – you need to immediately draw the reader in, you have to reach some kind of reader-satisfaction-level by the end of the episode (even if you have a cliff-hanger), and you have to maintain that pace and storytelling arc over multiple episodes. But all that hard work on the part of the author makes it (potentially) more enjoyable for the reader.

Can You Name Some Successful Serials?

Yes!

Hugh Howey’s Wool
RaShelle Workman’sBlood and Snow
Platt &Wright’sYesterday’s Gone

These are all recent bestselling serials that drew audiences in and helped revitalize the serial form.

Why Would I Read a Serial?

Readers tell me that they’re enjoying the short episodes – they can read them quickly over lunch or in an evening and get a full “story” worth of entertainment. The fast pacing means there’s a lot of story packed into a short number of words. Readers also say they enjoy the anticipation of finding out “what will happen next” much like a TV series where you get invested in the characters. Think about how a favorite TV series will sometimes focus one episode on one character or another, diving into their backstory. As a writer, I like that I can go in-depth a little more in each “episode” than I could in a novel, giving a richness to the story and characters that might be more difficult to do in a novel format.

All serials eventually come to an end, just like a “season” of your favorite TV series. Whether you enjoy reading serials as they release, or want to wait until the complete season is out so you can read the episodes back-to-back, serials are a fast-paced, exciting way to enjoy a story.

As a writer, I find serials are the hardest writing I’ve ever loved.
