REBEL OBSESSION (AKM #3) by Donya Lynne-a review

Rebel ObsessionABOUT THE BOOK: Former cobalt addict and AKM drug counselor, Io is a male vampire known as much for his abrasive personality as for his playboy lifestyle. In other words, he’s not the likeliest to make friends and settle down. Life on the edge suits him, and he lives full throttle, making his own rules, and damn the consequences. What he wants, he takes, and what he wants now is Miriam. If only he can find a way to see her again without getting himself killed, but her father stands in the way.

Miriam is the daughter of the king. Strong-willed and defiant, she feels like a prisoner in her own home and struggles to break free from under her father’s oppressive hold. The king’s law surrounding Miriam is explicitly clear: No one touches her. Period.

In a fit of rebellion, Miriam has turned to cobalt to find relief and freedom, but now she’s a prisoner to addiction as much as to her father’s strict control. What’s more, she can’t get sexy Io, who tended to her so gently as she recovered from her first overdose, off her mind. Will she ever see him again?

When Miriam overdoses a second time, she and Io are thrust back together, and all bets are off. Seeing each other was the one thing both wanted, and not even the king’s laws and threats of punishment will be enough to defuse their rebellious obsession with one another now that they’ve found each other again, even if the consequences are death.

********************************

REVIEW: I am a big fan of Donya Lynne’s AKM (All The King’s Men) series and Io’s storyline is both heartbreaking and fascinating. Donya has pulled no punches as Io fights for the mate who is fighting a war of her own. Between her father’s iron rule and her addiction to cobalt, Io must make Miriam face the hard facts as it pertains to her life and their future. But Io’s vampire has mated with the one woman who comes with enough family baggage to tip the scales in no ones favor.

Donya involves all of the AKM vampires and half-breeds in Rebel Obsession-from their fight to keep Io’s mating a secret to their defense of a friend when the vampire King sentences one of their own to death- the AKM team members are willing to sacrifice for the sake of friendship and love.

As the story develops you can see that there is a potential for several more storylines. Trace is in need of some major therapy and he may just have found the very woman who can control the beast who is only too willing to come out and play. And to complicate matters, someone long thought dead will re-enter the vampire’s lives and change the history for both family and friends.

REBEL OBSESSION reveals some major plot twists and developments that can only be answered in future storylines. Donya has grabbed my proverbial paranormal junkie side and keeps my addiction at an all time high (pun intended). I am looking forward to the next instalment in the AKM and I hope I do not have to wait too long.

My only complaint:  the cover.  Zach Tesar’s arm looks all wonky-and yes-that is my professional opinion-‘wonky’-in fact his head looks ‘photoshopped’ onto the body.

AKM collage

ETERNAL DARKNESS (Cursed in Darkness #1) by Natalie Hancock

Eternal DarknessABOUT THE BOOK: Layla, a twenty-one-year-old half-breed known as a dhampir, is incredibly beautiful and deadly. She drinks vampire blood for power and to stop the burning hunger.

The vampire academy is a hundred acres of land surrounded by high tech security to ensure that none enter or leave. She is the protection.

When she has lessons with the vampires, she struggles with her hunger and has to learn to trust them—a big issue for Layla because of her past, something she can neither forget nor run from. The past that haunts her dreams reminds her that she cannot hide as she lives her life in the academy.

Then there is Shade—an impossibly handsome vampire and Layla’s one-on-one instructor. Desires she never knew rise whenever he looks at her. She cannot stop how her body reacts to his touch or how much she wants his body and his blood.

It is a forbidden lust that they share, one they must keep a secret from those around them or Layla risks everyone finding out who she really is.

Someone wants her dead. Layla’s goals, deal with the vampires who hate dhampir’s and keep herself alive. Can she do it?

***********************

REVIEW: ETERNAL DARKNESS is the first storyline in Natalie Hancock’s Cursed in Darkness series that follows half-breed dhampir Layla as she struggles with what she is in a world of full-blooded vampires and shifters. Each novel is approximately 150 pages in length-so a quick read on a lazy afternoon.

Natalie introduces the reader to an adult version of Vampire Academy where beings like Layla are snubbed and ridiculed, as well as feared for their need to feed from other vampires. Layla is an enigma in the world of vampires-she is stronger and faster, well trained in the martial arts and aware of everything that goes on around her, but Layla is also haunted by a past that incudes Shadow Demons and humans with a need for vengeance. And in true paranormal style, Layla’s past will catch up with her during her stay at The Academy. But Layla tends to stay by herself, refusing to get involved lest someone find out her true heritage and identity, until the one man who can pull her out of her shell.

We are introduced to Shade-Layla’s lover and for all intents and purposes, the one person who is considered her equal. Their relationship develops quickly and we are privy to Layla’s need to be wanted and loved. Her relationship with her father is a welcome change from other paranormal parental conflicts and along with her BFF and guardian Nikalye, Layla is well protected within the confines of The Academy. But as the story develops we learn that there are those willing to risk everything for a shot at the half-breed vampire and Layla is not as safe as everyone had promised.

Natalie recites a history of vampires and dhampir’s that is unlike many other paranormal storyline and in that, it is a welcome change. She draws the reader into the story as our heroine must explain to the other students the history and lore about vampires, humans, dhampirs and Shadow Demons and in doing so Natalie puts an interesting spin on the origins of the first vampire. I am impressed with Natalie’s take on the paranormal genre and I am looking forward to catching up with the series. Oh, and don’t worry, all seven books were released in 2012-you will not be far behind.

D.B. Reynolds-Interview and Giveaway with the Author

D.B. REYNOLDS-Interview and Giveaway with the Author

FOLLOW: Website / Facebook / Twitter / YouTube

TRC:  Hi D.B. and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of LUCAS –the latest novel in your Vampires in America series.

We would like to start with some background information.  Would you please tell us something about yourself?

D.B.  Thanks for inviting me to the Cafe. Something about myself … I’m married, no children. My darling husband (DH) and I live near Los Angeles, in one of those flammable canyons you always hear about on the news. I love books and movies, travel and writing.

TRC:  Would you please tell us what the initials D.B. stand for in your name?

D.B.  D. B. Reynolds is my pen name. The initials represent family names, and are my way of paying homage to some important people in my life.

TRC:  Many authors begin their love of writing at an early age.  What was the catalyst that sparked your interest in writing?

D.B.  I’ve been a reader all my life, and always dreamed of being able to write the kind of books I enjoyed reading, to be able to tell stories that would draw people in the way the stories I loved did for me. I wrote on and off since high school. But then at a critical juncture in my life, I met a woman who’d been an acquiring editor for several of the big Sci-Fi houses. She read a couple of my short stories, and told me I really could write. It was her encouragement that motivated me to give it a serious try.

TRC:  Please list the top 5 things you would like to accomplish in the next 10 years.

D.B.  Not necessarily in order …
Write the last two books of the current Vampires in America story arc, and start a new one!
Publish my new Urban Fantasy series (while still writing my Vampires in America, of course.)
Travel somewhere I’ve never been, with my DH, naturally.
Read lots of amazing books.
Clean out my closets.

TRC:  Would you please give us a run down on the premise of the VAMPIRES IN AMERICA series?

D.B.  The books revolve around the Vampire Lords who rule all the vampires of North America, which is divided into eight territories, one to each Vampire Lord. The Vampire Lords are extremely formidable, with the literal power of life and death over the vampires they rule. They can kill with a thought, but they’re usually not that kind, preferring to get up close and personal when dealing death. My vampires are patterned after the classic vampire. They’re aggressive, territorial and violent. They embrace the power their vampirism gives them and relish the drinking of blood from the vein. There is no soul-searching, no self-hating. And when it comes to their mates, they’re extremely possessive and protective. Each book in the series arc introduces a Vampire Lord and the human woman who will be his mate, or in Sophia’s case, the man who will be hers. The books are also full of action and adventure, with a mystery or a crime to be solved, a wrong to be avenged.

TRC:  BETRAYED is your August 2012 e-novella in the same series.  Would you please tell us something about the premise?

ORDER LINK: Amazon

D.B.:  BETRAYED was the first Cyn & Raphael e-novella. Many of my readers wanted more of Cyn and Raphael, the first two characters introduced in the series. But they’re very dominant personalities—especially Raphael, who is probably the most powerful Vampire Lord in existence—and when the two of them are in a book, they tend to overshadow everyone else. So, I’m writing the Cyn & Raphael e-novellas to let readers keep up with their story, while still introducing the new lords and their mates in the books. In BETRAYED, someone sends an assassin after Raphael, and Cyn is determined to find out and kill whoever it was. Of course, the last thing Raphael wants is to put Cyn in the line of fire, so he and his people pursue their own hunt, while trying to keep Cyn out of it, even if it means betraying the trust she has in him.

TRC:  LUCAS is the latest release (October 2012) in your Vampires in American series.  Would you please tell us something about the premise?

ORDER LINKS: Barnes and Noble / Amazon/ The Book Depository

D.B.:  Lucas Donlon is a Vampire Lord. Charming and irreverent to his friends and lovers, he enjoys everything about his life as a vampire. When hostilities with his neighboring Vampire Lord come to a head, war is imminent, and Lucas will prove to be every bit as lethal as he is charming. But then we meet FBI Special Agent Kathryn Hunter, who is about to step into it and complicate Lucas’s life. Her baby brother has gone missing under circumstances that suggest a vampire is involved, and she will do anything to find him, even if it means going against both her FBI bosses and Lucas. Waging war against their enemies and each other, Lucas and Kathryn will risk everything to keep the most deadly vampire war in hundreds of years from engulfing every vampire, and human, in North America.

TRC:  How many books do you have planned for the series?

D.B.:  My current contract is for eight books, and four Cyn & Raphael e-novellas. But my publisher has already expressed an interest in carrying the series beyond the original eight books, with a new story arc.

TRC:  If you could virtually cast the Vampires in America using models and actors with whom would you cast the main characters in the series?

D.B.:  I get asked this a lot, and it’s really difficult. When I’m writing, I have a very specific image of my characters in my head, but it usually doesn’t relate to anyone in the real world. My vampires are all really big, intense guys, so casting looks-wise would be difficult enough, but to get that intensity, you’d need people who could act.

TRC:  If you could change anything about the series what would it be and why?

D.B. : Honestly, there’s nothing. I love every one of my guys, and have been very happy with the final manuscripts. Well, except for Rajmund—his story came in much longer than my publisher expected, and I had to do some serious cutting, but I was able to post a couple of the cut scenes on my blog. On the other hand, I would love it if I could someday get a new set of covers with original cover art. I’d love to see an artist’s version of my Vampire Lords.

TRC:  How do you handle the stress and anxiety of writer’s block?

D.B.:  Knock on wood, I’ve never experienced true writer’s block. There are times when the story doesn’t flow as smoothly as I’d like, but in those cases, I put in a place holder and skip to another scene. And when I go back, the stubborn scene is always there in my head. Generally, I find the best cure for writer’s block is writing. Once I lose myself in the narrative, the words always come.

TRC:  Who or what has been the biggest influence in your personal life? Professional life?

D.B.:  The biggest influence in my personal and professional life was my mother, who really encouraged my education and reading. She died before my first book was released, but I know she’d be proud. On a strictly personal note, I have a large and supportive family, and my wonderful husband who’s the most brilliant person I’ve ever known—and I’ve met some brilliant people.

TRC:  On what are you currently working?

D.B.:  I’m currently working on the first book of a new Urban Fantasy series. It doesn’t have vampires, but it does have werewolves, demons and human/demon hybrids. I’m also working on the outline for the next Vampires novella and book, and I’ll be starting those in late January.

Ravyn’s Fall (Heaven and Hell #1) by Julie Blackstone-a review

Ravyn’s Fall (Heaven and Hell #1) by Julie Blackstone

RAVYN’S FALL (Heaven and Hell #1) by Julie Blackstone

RAVYN’S FALL is the first novel in Julie Blackstone’s new Young Adult series Heaven and Hell. Focusing on the battle between Angel and Demons: Nephilim, Cherubim and Seraphim- Ravyn’s Fall follows Ravyn Creed as she tries to navigate between good and evil, knowing that both want to end her life. And to complicate matters she is falling in love with the demon that made a deal with the devil. Ravyn lived for 16 years with her guardian Hank. But on this night, she would learn what it meant to truly be alone.

Ravyn is a 16 year old girl with a gift and this gift has made her a target in the world of the supernatural. The demons from hell want to protect Ravyn; the Cherubim want her destroyed; and the Nephilum want her blood. Could anything else possibly go wrong? At this point everyone will need a spreadsheet to keep track of the various types of angels and demons, on the hunt for a crossbreed child.

Enter Ezekiel (Zeke) Lancaster. Zeke is unlike anyone that Ravyn has met. And when Zeke reveals a little of the history behind the recent attacks, Ravyn is sure that she quite possibly has gone insane. As Ravyn approaches her 17th birthday a series of attacks will force Ravyn to search alone for answers, but she will unwittingly expose those closest to her to danger.

Ravyn and Zeke’s relationship is intense from the start. But unbeknownst to Ravyn, Zeke’s intentions have not always been admirable or pure. Zeke has made a deal and Ravyn is the price. But the ultimate betrayal will come from the family she never knew existed and their connection to the young man with whom she is falling in love.

We meet several of Zeke’s extended family and friends and, each will play a significant role in Ravyn’s new life. Ravyn’s guardian must answer to a few questions and Kimmy-Ravyn’s BFF is the only human who is completely aware of the angel and demons existence.

RAVYN’S FALL is a well-written, fast paced Young Adult storyline without the usual teen angst and whoa-be-gone self-pity that many young heroines endure. Julie Blackstone weaves a tale of warrior angels, loving demons and a vampire existence connected to both Heaven and Hell. The heroine is thrown head first into a world that wants her dead, and she comes out fighting for her life with her heart and soul. Ravyn’s Fall is a fascinating look at Heaven and Hell. I am looking forward to RAVYN’S GRACE later in 2012.

THE WOLF WITHIN (Purgatory #1) by Cynthia Eden

THE WOLF WITHIN is the November 15th, 2012 release from Cynthia Eden’s NEW paranormal Purgatory series. Like the name implies, Purgatory is a holding prison for members of the supernatural race, only this Purgatory holds the ones who cannot be controlled.

Duncan McGuire is one of the FBI Para Unit’s most lethal and powerful werewolf hunters, but on this night Duncan would become the victim of a werewolf bite that will force his partner to make the decision to either end or save his life. What Duncan doesn’t know is that there are others in the FBI with secrets and powers, and Duncan has become a pawn in a game between the Feds and an unknown source. People in power know the history of every agent, and Duncan’s family history hides a few skeletons that even he is not aware.

Holly Young is the Unit doctor who patches up the bullet wounds and broken bones whenever an agent is hurt. Holly believes she is unlike anyone else in the FBI and she is hoping to keep her identity a secret. But when Duncan McGuire is brought into her office on the verge of turning wolf, Holly will discover that Duncan’s wolf will lay claim to Holly as his mate. And Holly knows that the secret she is hiding, is the very one that calls Duncan to her blood.

We are introduced to several of Duncan and Holly’s fellow agents, as well as Holly’s stepbrother Pate. Pate is a rather interesting character and one that I am not sure if I like. As the Para Unit commander it is Pate’s duty to ensure his men are well aware of the risks and dangers, but Pate continues to expose his men to an ever-increasing world of evil. Pate is a player in a much larger game, and he too hides a few secrets of his own. He is a user and he will use anyone or anything, including his sister and his friend, to keep the Unit strong.

Holly and Duncan have always been attracted to one another, but since her accident the year before, Holly has kept her distance. Pate is trying to help Holly with her recovery, but Pate’s actions will place everyone, including his sister in danger. Duncan’s wolf wants its mate and nothing will stop him from claiming Holly.

THE WOLF WITHIN is a fast paced story with plenty of twists and secrets that have yet to be revealed. You think you know the bad guy – just wait !  There is a struggle for power within the FBI and the supernaturals will pay the ultimate price when one of their own is hoping to start a war. The FBI has been compromised and the Para Unit will have to go under cover to discover who is pulling the strings.

And….it doesn’t hurt…. Francesco J Cura is on the cover !!!!!

Something Witchy This Way Comes by H.P. Mallory – a review

SOMETHING WITCHY THIS WAYS COME (Jolie Wilkins #5 ) by HP Mallory

SOMETHING WITCHY THIS WAYS COMES (Jolie Wilkins #5 ) by HP Mallory

SOMETHING WITCHY THIS WAY COMES is the 5th and final novel (September 25, 2012 release) in H.P. Mallory’s Jolie Wilkins series.  Jolie is a 30 year old woman, believed to be a witch with the ability to re-animate the dead, who is now Queen of the Underworld.  The Underworld consists of the supernatural powers such as vampires, werewolves, fae and witches.  The Underworld is at war with the faction of supernatural society known as Lurkers.  Lurkers are a magically gifted segment of ½ human ½ vampire hybrids.  But what the Underworld did not know, is that the Lurkers, as the Underworld called them, were more than just a hybrid species of human and vampire-much more.

Jolie along with her bond-mate Rand Balfour had taken up her position as Queen of the Underworld.  As ruler, she led a council of supernatural leaders and it was their role to act whenever a supernatural broke their laws. Jolie was troubled as her council had advised that Sinjin Sinclair, her current guardian and protector, had broken the law and punishment had to be enforced. But Jolie’s feelings for Sinjin are mixed- part of her loved Sinjin and these feelings were interfering with her ability to sentence her friend.

Bella Sawyer is a witch who was first introduced in book one-Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble when she positioned herself to become Queen of the Underworld. Currently Bella was imprisoned on Rand’s estate for sins and crimes against their current Queen. Bella’s role in Something Witchy This Way Comes is small but powerful.

Lurkers are the ‘bad guys’-half human/half vampire and the nemesis of the supernatural world and Jolie would experience life as a Lurker first hand.  Jolie’s time in the Lurker world would reveal many secrets and right the misconceptions she once believed. But the Lurkers are looking for their Queen as well and only one woman to fill that position.  And meeting another ‘Lurker’ at the compound with similar powers would open up thoughts of betrayal and mistrust at the hands of some of the people she had considered close friends and allies.

SOMETHING WITCHY THIS WAY COMES is a revealing and final instalment in H.P Mallory’s Jolie Wilkins series. Jolie’s true origins, heritage and family lineage are revealed as well as a couple of surprising bits of information. Rand and Jolie’s relationship is closer now that they are bond-mates but Sinjin’s love for Jolie is an ever-present proverbial elephant in the room.  H.P. does a wonderful job marrying her characters together and as a reader, I appreciate the fact that she references much of the series previous premises that allow for a smooth flow of information. The blending of information keeps the reader current with what has happened in the previous book.  Something Witchy This Way Comes is an excellent storyline that answers and confirms many of our suspicions and concerns but also leaves many unanswered questions. I smell a spin-off for Sinjin.

Be Witched (Novella) by H.P. Mallory-a review

BE WITCHED (Jolie Wilkins/Rand Balfour novella) by HP Mallory

BE WITCHED (Jolie Wilkins/Rand Balfour novella) by HP Mallory

Sinjin Sinclair and Rand Balfour were now aligned in the war between Bella and the supernatural powers. While recovering from her recent run-in with the Dougal the fairy, fighting for her life as well as the promise of support by King Ordan of the Fae, Jolie was unaware that the vampire and the warlock were in a war of words over the right to claim Jolie as their own.

Rand’s feelings for Jolie were confusing. He had refused to claim Jolie as his own, knowing that the relationship between witches and warlocks were for life. He had promised to protector her and guard her with his life, but his fight with Sinjin would be interrupted by a scream and an attack against Jolie by another of the supernatural powers.

Vampires and Witches were immune to one another’s powers therefore Rand must bespell Jolie so that Sinjin can heal her wounds. But the allure of a vampire’s sexuality during a feed was too much for Jolie, and she fell prey to the sexual desires and the site and images were overwhelming to Rand who had yet to reveal the true extent of his feelings for Jolie.

Rand’s need to be close to Jolie would find them together, but once again Rand’s sense of honor would hold him back from staking a claim on Jolie. Rejected and feeling betrayed, Jolie would force Rand to make a decision that would affect both of their lives. But Rand had a secret and Jolie was too hurt to realize that his feelings went beyond protector and friend, but to lover and mate.

BE WITCHED is a short story that looks at the relationship between Sinjin, Rand and Jolie. Both males desire Jolie, but it is Rand’s growing feelings for Jolie that could place them both in danger. A welcome addition to HP Mallory’s Jolie Wilkins series.

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble by H.P. Mallory-a review

FIRE BURN AND CAULDRON BUBBLE (Jolie Wilkins #1) by H.P.Mallory

FIRE BURN AND CAULDRON BUBBLE is the first storyline in H.P.Mallory’s Jolie Wilkins’s series. Jolie is a 28 year old who believes she is psychic and has the ability to see people’s auras-their life forces. But the day the handsome Rand Balfour stepped into her parlor all bets were off. He needed Jolie to help him discover who killed his client’s father, and with that, he announced she was a witch.

Rand Balfour is a warlock. As the head of the British coven, Rand needed Jolie to go back in time to the 1920’s looking for a killer. Finding the dead man was easy, but bringing him back to present day –alive- was a surprise. Jolie Wilkins could apparently re-animate the dead.

When the news about her powers reached the supernatural Underworld, Jolie would find herself on the most- wanted list in a war between the species. Each with their own agenda, Jolie was the prize. With her ability to ‘bring back’ the dead, the leaders of the warring factions needed her powers. And to make matters worse, she was told she was much more than a witch.

The relationship between Rand and Jolie was tenuous. There was instant chemistry between the pair, but Rand was ambivalent about pursuing a physical relationship. Claiming to be her protector, Rand denied his feelings saying they were now working together and he could not compromise that trust. But the real reason would soon become evident when Rand confesses his reasons as to why. With the mixed signals, Jolie refused to wait around for Rand to make up his mind. But when she was asked to re-animate the fallen werewolf pack leader, she would find herself being wooed by a wolf for all the wrong reasons.

We are introduced to Sinjin Sinclair – a powerful master vampire. When Jolie finds herself trapped with another vampire, she will soon discover, that she has become the pawn in a game between the supernatural powers. And Sinjin’s apparent relationship with her abductor became more confusing when Jolie found herself on the run, with Sinjin by her side.

In the upcoming war between the supernatural powers, each side was trying to align itself with the most powerful and having Jolie would help to re-populate the different species with some of their most powerful-albeit dead-ancestors. But when one of the more powerfully gifted supernatural species  refused to get involved, Rand had a plan that would inevitably place Jolie in a fight for her life.

FIRE BURN AND CAULDRON BUBBLE is an amazing start to H.P. Mallory’s Jolie Wilkins series. The storyline is well-paced, the character development is smooth and entertaining, and the relationship between Rand and Jolie frustrated the hell out of me..lol. They are perfect for one another.
