The location of the glymera’s notorious prison camp was lost after the raids. When a freak accident provides Nyx clues to where her sister may still be doing time, she becomes determined to find the secret subterranean labyrinth. Embarking on a journey under the earth, she learns a terrible truth—and meets a male who changes everything forever.

The Jackal has been in the camp for so long he cannot recall anything of the freedom he once knew. Trapped by circumstances out of his control, he helps Nyx because he cannot help himself. After she discovers what happened to her sister, getting her back out becomes a deadly mission for them both.

United by a passion they can’t deny, they work together on an escape plan for Nyx—even though their destiny is to be forever apart. And as the Black Dagger Brotherhood is called upon for help, and Rhage discovers he has a half-brother who’s falsely imprisoned, a devious warden plots the deaths of them all…even the Brothers.

•••••••

REVIEW:THE JACKAL is the first instalment in JR Ward’s contemporary, adult PRISON CAMP: BLACK DAGGER LEGACY paranormal, romance series-a companion / spin off to the author’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. This is vampire Jackal ‘Jack’, and Nyxanlis ‘Nyx’ story line. THE JACKAL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Several of the characters cross-over from the original series for cohesion and familiarity.

Told from several third person perspectives following two timelines and two intersecting paths THE JACKAL focuses on the atrocities of the Glymera prison camp, thought to have been disbanded and disarmed. Nyxanlis aka ‘Nyx’ has been desperate to free her sister Janelle, who was sentenced to the subterranean prison fifty years earlier for the murder of a man for which she had worked. Sneaking into the prison was easy but Nyx never expected to find herself falling in love with a vampire, a prisoner who called himself The Jackal, a man whose own life sentence was questionable and wrong. Working together alongside several vampires and wolven, Nyx and Jack would go in search of information regarding Nyx’s sister only to find themselves facing a potential death sentence when their adventure is discovered.

Meanwhile, the author takes the reader back a century where we get our fist glimpse into the life of the man known as The Jackal, and his initial encounter and association with the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Following a fight with the lessers, an injured Rhage finds himself recovering at the home of one of the Glymera, where he will meet a man, whose face is familiar, but a man who will be falsely accused of a crime against a female vampire. One hundred years will pass before Rhage will get a chance to meet his half-brother, for the second time.

THE JACKAL is a story that focuses on the heart breaking, and unethical conditions of a vampire prison camp where ‘The Command’ controls with an iron fist. Most of the prisoners has been sentenced for who they are, and not what they have done but at one time the rich and powerful thought they controlled the world of the vampire, and in doing so, sentenced anyone and everyone who got in their way.

JR Ward, once again, pulls the reader into the world of the vampire-a different world than what we have seen with her Black Dagger Brotherhood. The prison camp shows the underbelly of corruption, power and control by the wealthy Glymera, an underbelly I would have thought the BDB should have had some idea still existed. The premise is engaging and captivating-there is a bit of a twist to the story line premise; the characters are energetic and dynamic; the romance is a case of insta-lust to love, a fated relationship that quickly develops in the face of potential discovery and loss.

Western New York State, Present DayThe whole “life is a highway” metaphor was so ubiquitous, so overused, so threadbare and torn-patched, that as Nyx sat in the passenger side of a ten-year-old station wagon, and stared at the moonlit asphalt trail cutting through brush and bramble in west-ern New York State, she wasn’t thinking a damn thing about how sim-ilar the course of roads and lives could be: You could get sweet-sailing easy declines of coasting. Bad, bumpy, rough patches that rattled your teeth. Uphill hauls that you thought would never end. Bored stretches between far-apart exits.
And then there were the obstacles, the ones that came from out of nowhere and carried you so far off your planned trip that you ended up in a completely different place.
Some of these, both in the analogy and in fact, had four legs and a kid named Bambi.
“Watch out!” she yelled as she clapped a hand on the steering wheel and took control.
Too late. Over the screeching of tires, the impact was sickeningly soft, the kind of thing that happened when steel hit flesh, and her sister’s response was to cover her eyes and tuck in her knees.
Not helpful considering Posie was the one with the access to the brake pedal. But also completely in character.
The station wagon, being an inanimate object set into motion, had no brain of its own, but plenty of motivation from the sixty-two miles an hour they’d been going. As such, the old Volvo went bucking bronco as they left the rural byway, its stiff, cumbersome body heaving into a series of hill-and-dale dance moves that had Nyx hitting her head on the padded roof even though she was belted in.
The headlights strobed what was in front of the car, the beams point-and-shooting in whatever direction and angle the front grille hap-pened to be thrown in. For the most part, there was just a leafy morass of bushes, the green, spongy territory a far better outcome than she would have predicted.
That all changed.
Like a creature rising out of the depths of a lake, something brown, thick, and vertical was teased in the verdant light show, disappearing and reappearing as the shafts of illumination willy’d-their-nilly around.
Oh, shit. It was a tree. And not only was the arboreal hard-stop an immovable object, it was as if a steel crank-chain ran between its thick trunk and the undercarriage of the station wagon.
If you’d steered for a collision course, you couldn’t have done a better job.
Inevitable covered it.
Nyx’s only thought was for her sister. Posie was braced in the driv-er’s seat, her arms straight out, fingers splayed, like she was going to try to push the tree away—
The impact was like being punched all over the body, and there must have been a crunch of metal meeting wood, but with the airbags deploy-ing and the ringing in Nyx’s ears, she couldn’t hear much. Couldn’t breathe well. Couldn’t seem to see.
Hissing. Dripping. Burned rubber and something chemical.
Someone was coughing. Her? She couldn’t be sure.
“Posie?”
“I’m okay, I’m okay . . .”
Nyx rubbed her stinging eyes and coughed. Fumbling for the door, she popped the release and shoved hard against some kind of resistance. “I’m coming around to help you.”
Assuming she could get out of the damn car.
Putting her shoulder into the effort, she forced the door through something fluffy and green, and the payback was that the bush barged in, expanding into the car like a dog that wanted to sniff around.
She fell out of her seat and rolled onto the scruff. All-four’ing it for a spell, she managed to get up on to her feet and steady herself on the roof as she went around to the driver’s side. Peeling open Posie’s door, she released the seat belt.
“I got you,” she grunted as she dragged her sister out.
Propping Posie against the car, she cleared the blond hair back from those soft features. No blood. No glass in the perfect skin. Nose was still straight as a pin.
“You’re okay,” Nyx announced.
“What about the deer?”
Nyx kept the curses to herself. They were about ten miles from home, and what mattered was whether the car was drivable. No offense to Mother Nature and animal-lovers anywhere, but that four-legged scourge of the interstate was low on her list of priorities.
Stumbling to the front, she shook her head at the damage. A good two feet of the hood—and, therefore, engine—was compressed around a trunk that had all the flexibility of an I beam, and she was hardly an automotive expert, but that had to be incompatible with vroom-vroom, home safe.
“Shit,” she breathed.
“What about the deer?”
Closing her eyes, she reminded herself about the birth order. She was the older, responsible one, black-haired and brusque like their father had been. Posie was the blond, good-hearted youngest, who had all the warmth and sunny nature that their mahmen had possessed.
And the middle?
She couldn’t go down the Janelle rabbit hole right now.
Back over at her open door, Nyx leaned in and moved the deflated airbag out of the way. Where was her phone? She’d put it in a cupholder after she’d texted their grandfather as they’d left Hannaford. Great. Nowhere to be found—
“Thank God.”
Bracing her hand on the seat, she went down into the wheel well. And got a palm full of bad news.
The screen was cracked and the unit dark. When she tried to fire the thing up, it was a no go. Straightening, she looked over the ruined hood. “Posie, where is your—”
“What?” Her sister was focused on the road that was a good fifty yards away, her stick-straight hair tangled down her back. “Huh?”
“Your phone. Where is it?”
Posie glanced over her shoulder. “I left it at home. You had yours, so I just, you know.”
“You need to dematerialize back to the farmhouse. Tell grandfather to bring the tow truck and-”
“I’m not leaving here until we take care of that deer.”
“Posie, there are too many humans around here and—”
“It’s suffering!” Tears glistened. “And just because it’s an animal doesn’t mean its life doesn’t matter.”
“Fuck the deer.” Nyx glared across the steaming mess. “We need to solve this problem now—”
“I’m not leaving until—”
“—because we have two hundred dollars of groceries melting in the back. We can’t afford to lose a week’s worth of—”
“—we take care of that poor animal.”
Nyx swung her eyes away from her sister, the crash, the crap she had to fix so goddamn Posie could continue to give her heart out to the world and worry about things other than how to pay the rent, keep food on the table, and make sure they had such exotic luxuries as electricity and running water.
When she trusted herself to look back without hurling a bunch of be-practical f-bombs at her fricking sister, she saw absolutely no change in Posie’s resolve. And this was the problem. A sweet nature, yes. That annoying, bleeding-heart, emphatic bullcrap, yes. Iron will? When it came it down to it, boatloads.
That female was not budging on the deer thing.
Nyx threw up her hands and cursed—loudly.
Back in the car. Opening the glove box. Taking out the nine milli-meter handgun she kept there for emergencies.
As she came around the rear of the station wagon, she eyed the re-usable grocery bags. They were crammed up against the bench seat as a result of the crash, and it was a good news/bad news situation. Any-thing breakable was done for, but at least the cold items were clois-tered together, united in a fight against the eighty-degree August night.
“Oh, thank you, Nyx.” Posie clasped her hands under her chin like she was doing a devotional. “We’ll help the—wait, what are you doing with the gun?”
Nyx didn’t stop as she passed by, so Posie grabbed her arm. “Why do you have the gun?”
“What do you think I’m going to do to the damn thing? Give it CPR?”
“No! We need to help it—”
Nyx put her face into her sister’s and spoke in a dead tone. “If it’s suffering, I’m going to put it down. It’s the right thing to do. That is the way I will help that animal.”
Posie’s hands went to her face, pressing into cheeks that had gone pale. “It’s my fault. I hit the deer.”
“It was an accident.” Nyx turned her sister around to face the station wagon. “Stay here and don’t look. I’ll take care of it.”
“I didn’t mean to hurt the—”
“You’re the last person on the planet who’d intentionally hurt any-thing. Now stay the hell here.”
The sound of Posie softly crying escorted Nyx back toward the road. Following the tire gouges in the dirt and the ruined foliage, she found the deer about fifteen feet away from where they’d veered off—
Nyx stopped dead in her tracks. Blinked a couple of times. Considered vomiting.
It wasn’t a deer.
Those were arms. And legs. Thin ones, granted, and covered with mud-colored clothes that were in rags. But nothing about what had been struck was animal in nature. Worse? The scent of the blood that had been spilled was not human.
It was a vampire.
They’d hit one of their own.
Nyx ran over to the body, put the gun away, and knelt down. “Are you okay?”
Dumbass question. But the sound of her voice roused the injured, a horrific and horrified face turning up to her.
It was a male. A pretrans male. And oh, God, the whites of both his eyes had gone red, although she couldn’t tell whether it was because of the blood running down his face or some kind of internal brain injury. What was clear? He was dying.
“Help . . . me . . .” The thin reedy voice was, interrupted by weak coughing. “Out of . . . prison . . . hide me . . .”
“Nyx?” Posie called out. “What’s happening?”
For a split second, Nyx couldn’t think. No, that was a lie. She was thinking, just not about the car, the groceries, the kid who was dying, or her hysterical sister.
“Where,” Nyx said urgently. “Where’s the camp?”
Maybe after all these years . . . she could find out where Janelle had been taken.
This had to be Fate.

Description:
Some promises are meant to be broken…

Veritas spent most of her life as a vampire Law Guardian. Now, she’s about to break every rule by secretly hunting down the dark souls that were freed in order to save Ian. But the risks are high. For if she gets caught, she could lose her job. And catching the sinister creatures might cost Veritas her own life.

Some vows are forever…

Ian’s memories might be fragmented, but this master vampire isn’t about to be left behind by the woman who entranced him, bound herself to him, and then disappeared. So what if demons, other Law Guardians, and dangerous, otherworldly forces stand against them? Come hell or high water, Ian intends to remind Veritas of the burning passion between them, because she is the only person seared on his mind–and his soul…

Review:

Wicked Bite by Jeaniene Frost is the 2nd book in her Night Rebel series. Being a major fan of Frost’s Night Huntress, I was thrilled to return to this world in the first book, Shades of Wicked.  Ian, the man we loved to hate, was the hero, and to my surprise, I did fall in love with Ian and Veritas.  The first book ended in a cliffhanger, making Wicked Bite a highly anticipated read.

Veritas, our heroine, managed to save Ian’s life by freeing his soul from the demon, Dagon, and was determined to find him and kill him.  In order to prevent Ian from looking for her, she put a spell on Ian to block his memories that they were married, and went searching for Dagon.

Ian, our hero, is slowly starting to remember things, and is desperate to find Veritas. He decides to go on his own, especially with his new found powers (teleporting, etc), and ignores his friends (Bones, Cat, Mencheres, Leila, Vlad ) trying to stop him.  It is always great to spend time with those we loved from the previous series.  Ian will go through any lengths to find Veritas, as he can feel their bond.

What follows is an exciting, nonstop action and an amazing story that has Veritas and Ian working together to find the Dagon. They will find themselves in dangerous situations throughout the book, coming up against powerful enemies.  There were so many different forces trying to stop them, but I loved how Ian convinced Veritas that their passion was real, and to use all of her god like powers to defeat the enemy, as he will always be there for her.  Emotional and so very well done.  To tell too much more would be spoilers, as this is one book you need to read for yourself.  Veritas and Ian are so worth it.

The last half of the book was exciting, dangerous, sexy, fun and I loved every moment of it, as I raced to finish the book.  The romance was intensely passionate, and I absolutely loved Ian and Veritas together.    Wicked Bites was another fantastic addition to this wonderful series.   I will add that there is another sort of a cliffhanger, though the story does come to a nice conclusion with a new problem to be explored in the next book. Kudos to Jeaniene Frost for giving us a super couple, whom we never imagined loving and rooting hard for them.

Night’s Kiss by Mary Hughes – a Review

Night’s Kiss by Mary Hughes – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository / Google Play / Apple

Description:
As a human who hunts vampires, I risk death each night I take to the streets. Bloodsuckers are stupidly fast. I have only my wits, my practice, and my weapons.

Oh yeah, and my rage.

Vampires killed my parents before my eyes when I was young. My revenge? I’ll destroy every last one of the evil bastards, starting with their king.

But only one man can help me locate the king. Achingly tall, dark, and too-sexy-for-his-own-good, Ryker is gorgeous enough to be the vamp king himself. But the devilish arch to his black eyebrow, his white, unfangy grin, and rocking the daytime are good clues that he’s human.

We’ll have to work together as uneasy allies if I hope to get my final revenge on the king—only now it seems evil monsters are also after our prey, and they’ll stop at nothing to see us all dead. And why are they having so much trouble finding the king?

Review;

I really enjoyed Night’s Kiss by Mary Hughes.  I found it to have a solid plot-line with well developed character development, not only of the main couple, but the secondary characters as well.  Everything just seemed to fit together and flow from one page to the next.  Yes we focus mainly on Kat and Ryker throughout the story as it’s about their adventure and path to each other, but the secondary characters play a major role in that path they are on, and they aid their story along.  The whole pretense of a vampire and vampire hunter being attracted to each other only to find out they are mates makes for a fun read.

Both Kat and Ryker are fun characters that you can’t help but like.  For an ancient being Ryker is pretty much like a teenage boy around Kat, he just can’t figure out what it is about her that makes him want to work with her to find the Vampire King, who happens to be Ryker’s best bud since forever.  However, for the majority of the story poor feisty, warrior woman, hear me roar Kat doesn’t know Ryker is a vampire because he portrays himself as a human PI, that is, when he’s not shapeshifting into the disguise of police officer Keydew.  Speaking of this other persona he likes to change into I couldn’t help but think of Deputy Sherriff Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith show, LOL!!  The way he played the part of officer Keydew to everyone was comical at times for me but I loved it, it added another dimension to Ryker’s character and personality.  Can you tell I really liked Ryker’s character??? 😉  As much as I liked our resident vampire, I have to say I thought Kat’s character was great.  She’s such a strong female lead you can’t help but appreciate all she’s been through in her life, along with her sister. I really liked the sisterly dynamics between them and enjoyed learning about their life and just who Kat really is.  Finding out she’s the product of the very thing she’s been hunting all her life throws her for a loop.  Yes, Kat’s parents are human and vampire, her father is the vampire.  However, with the help of her sisters, both adopted and biological she comes to accept her birth parents, which in the end leads her to be able to accept that Ryker had lied about being human and is in fact a vampire, and that she had come to love him.  Once the truth came out and they admitted they had feelings for each other things got even more fun between them, but in the end they do wind up with their HEA, but not without more drama and danger for these too.

I really enjoyed Night’s Kiss, and feel that Miss Hughes has another successful story on her hands. It’s fun, adventurous, with 2 strong leads for the main couple, with  just the right amount of mystery and danger tossed in for good measure to keep things entertaining.  For anyone who loves a good vampire read, then this one is a must.

Until next time, happy reading everyone.

Alpha’s Promise (Dark Protectors #10) by Rebecca Zanetti-a review

Alpha’s Promise (Dark Protectors #10) by Rebecca Zanetti-a review

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 25, 2019

To hell and back . . .

Though he has vampire, demon, and Viking blood rushing through his veins, Ivar Kjeidsen’s soul-crushing trip to hell broke him in ways he can barely fathom. One vow keeps the deadly immortal standing: To rescue the vampire brother who had sacrificed freedom for him. To do that, Ivar needs the help of a brilliant physicist with wary brown eyes, fierce brilliance, and skin that’s way too soft.

Dr. Promise Williams understands the underpinnings of the universe but has never figured out the human beings inhabiting it. Her function is to think—and not feel—until she’s touched by a vampire who’s nowhere near human. The primal hunger in his eyes awakens feelings in her that defy calculation. As she shows him the way to step between worlds, he brands her with a pleasure that could last more than a lifetime .

•••••••••••

REVIEW: ALPHA’S PROMISE is the tenth instalment in Rebecca Zanetti’s DARK PROTECTORS paranormal/fantasy romance series. This is hybrid demon/vampire Ivar Kjeidsen, and theoretical physicist Dr. Promise Williams’ story line. ALPHA’S PROMISE can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion, especially this particular arc of the series focusing on the group known as the Seven.

SOME BACKGROUND: A thousand years earlier, a number of immortal warriors went through a ritual that, if they survived, hardened their bodies against attack, a ritual meant to create a group of Seven known as The Shield. The Shield was created to protect the world from an evil race of vampires known as the Kurjans, their sect group known as the Cysts, and ultimately a rogue warrior once considered a friend- Ulric-a male of immense power. To protect the human race, Ulric was captured, and along with two of the Seven, was encapsulated in one of three spheres for all eternity. As the warriors search for the ‘Keys’ to perform the ritual, the Lock must be protected in order to take down the evil that is hoping to take over the world.

Told from several third person perspectives including Promise and Ivar, following several intersecting paths, ALPHA’S PROMISE follows the building relationship between hybrid demon/vampire Ivar Kjeidsen, and theoretical physicist Dr. Promise Williams. Someone, or more specifically, the Kurjans have been targeting enhanced female physicists, and Dr. Promise Williams is next on their list. In an effort to protect the enhanced human female, Ivan Kjeidsen volunteers to act as guardian but goes about his job all wrong. Hoping to discover the truth behind their ability to teleport, the Seven bring Promise Williams into their fold, in an effort to use her knowledge and her mind. As the Kurjans continue to target enhanced female physicists, Promise begins to unravel the secret behind temporal dimensions, worlds and the ability to teleport. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Ivar and Promise, and the potential fall-out as Promise and Logan’s mate Mercy find themselves, once again, taken hostage by the Kurjan vampires

Promise Williams doesn’t do relationships; math is her lover but meeting Ivar Kjeidsen stirs something deep within our story line heroine. Promise’s enhanced abilities allows her to detect what others cannot, an ability that makes her a target in the war between the demons and vampires. Ivar Kjeidsen’s goal is to return to the h*ll world in order to rescue his brother and friend but Quade doesn’t want rescuing, in fact, he wants the Seven to leave him alone. But Quade has a secret, that the Seven has discovered, and in this Quade is desperate for the Seven to cease and desist.

Meanwhile, Hope Kayrs-Kyllwood continues to dream walk with the young Kurjan male Drake, dream walking that pushes Hope to make plans for a meet and greet in real life. But things don’t go according to plan when Hope’s whereabouts and plans are discovered, with the potential of leading the Demons to war.

The relationship between Ivar and Promise is one of immediate attraction but neither one is looking for a permanent mate. Promise’s enhanced abilities are like a beacon to those whose powers she is able to detect, and in this Ivar is desperate to claim the woman as his mate. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Logan and Mercy, Ronan and Faith, Quade Kayrs, Benjamin Reese, Garrett Kayrs, Adare O’Cearbhaill and Grace, Hope Kayrs-Kylwood and her bestie Paxton; Dayne, leader of the Kurjan nation, and his son Drake; Promise’s university co-worker Dr. Mark Brookes; and fae/demon hybrid Haven Daly. Quade and Haven’s story is next in Hero’s Haven.

The world building continues to focus on the fight against the Kurjans and the Cysts; the protection of the Realm from the prophet Ulric; and Hope’s ongoing journeys into the Dreamworld. As the Seven try to rescue one of their own, Ivar is willing to sacrifice himself in an effort to bring his brother home. With the introduction of Promise Williams, the addition of mathematics and theoretical physics ups the game to a what if and how.

ALPHA’S PROMISE is a story of heart break, secrets, betrayal, vengeance. The premise is detailed, complex and entertaining; the romance is fated and seductive; the characters are sassy, colorful, energetic, and bold. ALPHA’S PROMISE is a wonderfully intricate and elaborate addition to Zanetti’s world of the Dark Protectors.

Enter Duran, another vampire prisoner of Chalen the Conqueror, and the man with whom Ahmare will fall in love. What ensues is the journey across country for Ahmare and Duran; the building relationship and love between our leading couple, and the potential fall-out as Duran sets out on a quest of his own to destroy the man that destroyed everyone he loved.

Duran knows where Chalen’s beloved is kept but the journey to freedom brings back too many memories of the past, a past that imprisoned our hero for over twenty –one years enduring torture and abuse at the hands of Chalen the Conqueror. Ahmare is desperate to negotiate her brother’s release but working with Duran finds our heroine falling for a man who is willing to sacrifice himself for the ultimate goal.

PRISONER OF NIGHT focuses on never-before mentioned side-characters of J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood, characters with no connection to the main series but characters whose lives, like the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s, are affected by torture, pain and abuse, with the added benefit of a ‘religious cult’, previously unknown to the Scribe Virgin and Wrath the King.

We are introduced to Ahmare’s long suffering brother Ahlan; Chalen the Conqueror; Duran’s friend Nexi, and Duran’s father Excalduran.

PRISONER OF NIGHT is a tale of survival, dedication, vengeance and love. The premise is heart breaking, emotional and raw; the characters are broken, determined and lost; the romance is passionate and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / iTunes / Google Play / Book Depository

Description:
MAJOR SPOILER WARNING-
While the books don’t have to be read in order, if you haven’t read Dragonsworn, this synopsis will contain massive spoilers for DS. We just wanted to warn you!

-MAJOR SPOILER WARNING
Born before man recorded time, I lived for thousands of years, believing myself to be something I’m not.

Someone I’m not.

Lied to and betrayed by gods, Daimons, and Dark-Hunters, I’ve struggled to find my way in a world where I’ve been cursed since the moment a vengeful goddess prematurely ripped me from my mother and planted me into the womb of an innocent woman who thought me her son.

Trained as a slayer and predator, I’ve learned to fit in and stay low. To become a tool for evil. Until I was sent to kill the one woman I couldn’t. My hesitation cost her, her life.

Or so I thought. In an act of betrayal that makes all the others pale in comparison, I’ve learned that things are not what they seem in this world and that my Phoebe still lives.

Now I will have to travel into the very pits of Hades to try and save her, even as everyone around me attempts to steal what little soul I have left. There’s only one person at my back and I’m not sure I can trust her either, for she was born of an enemy race. Yet sometimes the road to redemption is one that singes us to our very core. And if I fail to find the answers I need to save Phoebe, more than just my wife will die.

We will lose the world. Both human and Daimon.

***Please note that this book was previously titled BATTLE BORN and retitled to STYGIAN

Review;

Ms. Kenyon has done it again, caused me to have more questions by books end then answers.  So much happened in this book that she had me scratching my head going, ‘oh so that’s the connection’, and then at other times going ‘pardon, come again, what did I just read?’  Yes folks this was a confusing book to read at times and by books end I had more sticky notes attached to my ipad then you could imagine. It was the only way I could keep all the info straight and semi co-herent in my brain, lol! Yes there was a good chunk of Stygian where I felt like I was re-reading either Kiss of the Night, Acheron, One Silent Night, Styxx, and Dragonsworn but the scenes were craftily re-worked to be seen from Urian’s POV.  Pieces of Urian’s story that I wasn’t quiet sure of, or felt like a mystery needing solving suddenly fell into place thanks to these re-worked scenes.  Through these scenes we got to see sides of Ash, Stryker, Apollymi, Styxx, Savitar, Davyn, Paris and other characters that we weren’t privy to before.  All of these characters played major roles in shaping Urian into the creature he is today. Yes I said creature because he is rather unique to their world.  Thanks to Ms. Kenyon finally writing Urian’s story we learn that he is part human, Atlantean, Apollite, and Egyptian, and has the blood of three pantheons running through him.  We learn he has special powers and when used one of his arms lights up with special symbols that come directly from the Source.  Urian’s uniqueness also allowed him to prey on the most corrupt souls and not go Trelos(insane in the Daimon/Apollite world).  This also allowed him to go longer in between feedings and also be able to sustain his Apollite wife Phoebe.  Since Urian has the blood of Apollymi, Bet, Set, and Ash running through him, the final fate of the world is now running through his veins and bloodline.  He’s just as important to the world as Ash is, if not more now.

On top of learning everything we needed to know about Urian, we also get a good look at the Apollite/Daimon world.  How they are forced to live, what they’ve endured all these years at the hands of not only the gods/goddesses but the human world as well.  It puts their existence into a whole new light and makes us look at them differently.  It really wasn’t their fault at all, but stupid Apollo because he’s a man whore, and accidentally through Bethany for falling in love with Styxx and giving her allegiance/protection to the wrong side unknowingly.  If she hadn’t done that, then the Apollite curse wouldn’t have happened, Acheron wouldn’t have been killed thus causing Apollymi to destroy Atlantis and sink it to the bottom of the ocean. One little mistake and it triggered a huge chain reaction that affected so many in the end.

Throughout Stygian we not only learn about Urian and get his perspective on his life, the Apollites, Daimons, and the Dark Hunters, but we also had a lot of surprises regarding other characters and events that have happened throughout the series.  One being exactly how Artemis creates her Dark Hunters, and I’m not saying because it was a big surprise to me and it’s Urian who figures this out.  Two of the biggest surprises in regards to characters for me were Apolloymi and yes I dare say it Stryker.  Who knew Apollymi and Stryker both possess a heart and could actually care about someone other then themselves.  I wish I could say more about these two, but I’d be giving away even more spoilers in this review and you know how I hate spoilers.  😉  Let’s just say they aren’t as bad or awful as we were first led to believe. Everything they’ve done so far has always been in the best interest of those they love and hold dear.  I’m actually glad I have a whole new perspective regarding these two characters.  They’ve really grown on me and it’s all Urian’s fault, LoL!!  Darn you Urian and Ms. Kenyon!!

As I attempt to wrap this review up because I could seriously keep going here as we learn so much in Stygian you’re probably wondering why I haven’t mentioned anything about Urian’s love life/HEA.  All I’m going to say to that is read the book because it’s another part of his life that shapes him, and in the end I was very surprised regarding his HEA.  Am I happy about it, yes, is it one of that events that made me go; “pardon, come again, where’d this come from” yes it was but I loved every minute of it, along with the whole book.  I loved every moment of Stygian, her characters once again carried the story, the humour was there to lighten the mood when needed, and at other times the intensity was there punctuate a moment.  I’m glad we finally got to see what the life of an Apollite/Daimon means.  It’s a part of the Dark Hunter world that needed telling so thank you Ms. Kenyon and Urian.  For anyone whose a fan of this series it’s a must read.

Until next time my fellow Menyons, happy reading!!

And the more time Misha spends with her, the more he realizes she’s keeping secrets. When those secrets jeopardize both her and her sons, Misha will stop at nothing to keep them safe. Review:

In Demons Will Be Demons, I was hoping to read Misha’s book,  in this spin off series (The Realm) by AE Jones, and happy that is was; ? so a bonus.

Misha was Kyle’s loyal friend and demon. He helped her (yes Kyle is a girl) solve many cases in previous books.

He works for the Bureau of Supernatural Relations, and enjoys the job, but with this new assignment he thinks he may finally get a mate and a happy ending…..

He had found a demon he can finally settle down with (yes he’s been married 3 times, but this one is for keeps)

But he gets tongue tied around her, so he has to wait for the perfect moment to show this female that she is the one for him.

Callie had a relationship with a demon, and reading it, I got the distinct impression it wasn’t a happy one. And now she has twin boys to bring up on her own, and to make matters worse they are half demon with powers (they don’t usually come into their powers until their teens) so keeps no them safe and hidden is Callie’s priority. But she needs help from the bureau to keep the boys safe and to help them control their powers.

So Misha has the hots for a female demon and Callie has her interest firmly set on helping her boys, so I don’t see how Misha and Callie get together…..

But something happens that makes Misha look at Callie in a different light.

And Callie knows Misha has the hots for the female demon, but there is something special that just ticks all of Callie’s boxes, but as far as Callie is concerned, Misha just sees her as the twins mother.

The story line like the previous books are very well written. The characters are funny and flow easily.

I loved reading the mind games series, and this book followed them without missing a step.

Yes you can read this one without reading the previous books, but it gives you more background on the other characters in the previous books.

So how will Misha and Callie cope with twin demons, and will they get their happy ending ? Well ….. you’ll have to read it to find out ?
