A sizzling story of a woman who risks her life and her heart to find a wealthy man’s missing sister—the first novel in a sexy new romantic suspense series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks

When Caleb Devereaux’s younger sister is kidnapped, this scion of a powerful and wealthy family turns to an unlikely source for help: a beautiful and sensitive woman with a gift for finding answers others cannot.

While Ramie can connect to victims and locate them by feeling their pain, her ability comes with a price. Every time she uses it, it costs her a piece of herself. Helping the infuriatingly attractive and impatient Caleb successfully find his sister nearly destroys her. Even though his sexual intensity draws her like a magnet, she needs to get as far away from him as she can.

Deeply remorseful for the pain he’s caused, Caleb is determined to make things right. But just when he thinks Ramie’s vanished forever, she reappears. She’s in trouble and she needs his help. Now, Caleb will risk everything to protect her—including his heart. . . .

Review:

Keep Me Safe begins with Caleb finding Ramie in order to find his sister, and he’ll stop at nothing to make that a reality. Ramie is known for her psychic powers and her almost perfect record in locating abductees. Ramie had gone off grid in order to try and save herself from the devastation that using her “gift” causes her. However, Caleb can’t understand how someone could be so selfish as to not WANT to help victims of senseless crimes. Until he sees with his own eyes what happens when Ramie connects with a victim. Stunned, almost beyond belief, Caleb immediately knows that he crossed a line in tracking Ramie down, but, God help him, he’d do it again to help his sister. Once Ramie tells him what he needs to know, she tells him to leave and he reluctantly does so. He tells her he’ll be back, but by the time he goes back to the desolate cabin in Colorado, there is no sign of Ramie……..

A year passes and Caleb still cannot get the sight of Ramie out of his mind. He and his brothers have tried everything to try and find her, but to no avail. Until one night when a desperate Ramie reaches out to the only person she can think of that has enough resources that may actually be able to save her from a psychopath that has hunted and taunted her for a very long time. Caleb Devereaux. Once Caleb finds out where she is, he immediately leaps into action and brings her to his home, which puts the security at Fort Knox to shame. The once thing that Caleb hadn’t counted on? The psychopath is a very strong psychic that has the power to endanger everyone around Caleb and Ramie. And, endanger he does. Ramie fights Caleb along the way, not wanting to endanger his family, but Caleb will not have it. He wouldn’t have his sister back if not for Ramie, and he literally moves heaven and earth to protect those he considers his. And, yep, he considers Ramie his………

Keep Me Safe is not your usual romance novel. There are parts that are very dark, and even a little hard to read in places. The suspense is ramped up and the twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat. Is there instant infatuation on both the main characters’ parts? Yes. Is there an alpha male who will do anything to keep everyone safe? Yes. Is it a hell of a read? Abso-freaking-lutely!!!! I loved this book!! The mystery, suspense and paranormal aspects of the story were so much fun. Now, with that said, parts of it were not “fun”, but did add a level to the story that made it something more than Maya’s usual fair. I know that it won’t be for everyone, but, for me, it is one of my favorite Banks novels. Well done, Maya Banks, very very very well done!!

Immortal

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

About the book:

This is a world where sin and salvation collide. This is a world where a cynical fallen angel struggles with the seven deadly sins and seven chosen souls. With the spellbinding Immortal, the riveting series that “changed the face of paranormal romance” (Suit101.com) comes to an epic close as mankind’s reluctant savior struggles with his greatest challenge yet…

Review:

Immortal begins where the previous book left off.  Jim, the savior, has given up one of his wins to Devina, which gave her the lead by one.  Which means there are two souls left in play and Jim has to win the next two, or the evil Devina will literally rain hell down on earth.  Jim and Adrian, along with Sissy’s help, embark on their final journey together to try and right the wrongs wrought by Devina.  There is so much going on in this book that it makes it hard to even give a synopsis without giving away too much.  They are dealing with Nigel’s death which makes it even more difficult, as he was the “head” angel in heaven and the leader of Jim’s team.  They are still dealing with Eddie’s death, as well as trying to figure out who the next souls in play will be.  But, once they start figuring out whose souls have been placed in play by the Creator, things get to rolling. Fast.  And, yep, I didn’t see it coming.  Let’s just say they didn’t have to look far……..

J.R. Ward wrote a very good conclusion to her Fallen Angels series.  (I can’t believe it’s over!!)  There is angst, lots of despair and ultimate redemption that will keep you twisting in your seat.  Jim is the ultimate hero, not only fighting evil in the world, but fighting the demons within himself.  And, I don’t even know where to start with Devina.  She is one of the best anti-heroes I’ve ever read.  She is the ultimate evil, who has temper tantrums like a moody teenager which makes her so much fun to read.  Jim’s sidekicks, Adrian and Eddie, are AWESOME.  Sissy, who ends up being the heroine of the series, grew into her own throughout the book, and even though I didn’t think she was quite right for Jim, the fact that they end up together and in a wonderful place, brought a tear to my eye…..or 100…….or more……

The only thing that has curbed my sadness at this series being over is the fact that Ward has said that Devina, Adrian and Eddie will crossover at some point into the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.  And, I could not be happier about that.  They will be a fabulous addition to an already freaking awesome series.  Well done, J.R. Ward, very very well done.

The Red Wolf's Prize

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/

About the book: Release Date October 1, 2014

Sir Renaud de Pierrepont, the Norman knight known as the Red Wolf for the beast he slayed with his bare hands, hoped to gain lands with his sword. A year after the Conquest, King William rewards his favored knight with Talisand, the lands of an English thegn slain at Hastings, and orders him to wed the heiress that goes with them, Lady Serena.

SHE WOULD LOVE HIM AGAINST HER WILL

Serena wants nothing to do with the fierce warrior to whom she has been unwillingly given, the knight who may have killed her father. When she learns the Red Wolf is coming to claim her, she dyes her flaxen hair brown and flees, disguised as a servant, determined to one day regain her lands. But her escape goes awry and she is brought back to live among her people, though not unnoticed by the new Norman lord.

Deprived of his promised bride, the Red Wolf turns his attention to the comely servant girl hoping to woo her to his bed. But the wench resists, claiming she hates all Normans.

As the passion between them rises, Serena wonders, can she deny the Norman her body? Or her heart?

•••••••••••••••••••

Review: The Red Wolf’s Prize begins with Lady Serena of Talisand pondering her future. She has received word that King William decreed she is to wed the new Norman Lord of Talisand, who should be arriving any day. But, she knows that she could never love a Norman who battled his way across England and helped his king conquer her and her people. She knows her brother is to the north, in Scotland, and is determined to leave Talisand in order to reunite with him. Although she will miss her people, she knows she must leave to escape her fate. She would have done well to know that fate is a fickled mess sometimes………..

Sir Renaud, and his knights are exhausted, having fought across England for what seemed like forever. Once they are given their leave by King William, they head to Talisand and are pleased with the sight before them. Even though the people seem nervous, they are welcoming to Renaud, now Lord Talisand, and his fellow Normans. It doesn’t take Renaud long to realize that his promised bride, the beautiful Lady Serena, is not in Talisand and sends a contingent of his men to search for her. Good news? They find a small group of men and women and bring them back. The bad news? Lady Serena is nowhere to be found. However, there is a very attractive servant girl, Sarah, who catches the Lord’s attention and when he tries to woo her, things don’t go quite as he’d have liked them to.

As Lord Talisand becomes more comfortable with his new people, and they with him, he starts noticing that some of his men and some of the women of Talisand are growing more comfortable with each other as well. But when one of the local women is attacked by one of his men, only to be saved by Sarah, he knows that he is at a crossroads with his people and his next steps will either earn their trust or it will earn their ire. He has also noticed that Sarah is most fierce in her protection of all of the people of Talisand. How could he not be the same for his people and his new home? The one thing that would make it all better? His promised bride, Lady Serena at his side. But could she ever come to love him, or would she forever see him as a conqueror of her people and her land? Well my friends, you’ll have to read to find out. And, oh what a read it is………

Regan Walker has once again written a story that grabs hold and doesn’t let go. Serena is absolutely my favorite heroine dreamed up by Regan Walker to date! Her loyalty, her fierceness and her heart will endear her to everyone who reads this story. Her understanding of what her people want and need is so touching. She is truly a force to be reckoned with. Renaud is a perfect match for her. He is as loyal and fierce as she is, and their chemistry is palpable. The cast of supporting characters are terrific in their own right. I truly can’t wait to read more about them.

The Red Wolf is another wonderfully written story by Regan Walker. If you have read my reviews of her previous books, you know that I have raved about her character building and her masterful world building, and this one is no exception. The way she weaves actual historical events into her stories is unparalleled. There is intrigue, action and a beautifully developed romance. As you read her stories, you can see it and you can most definitely feel it. The Red Wolf is ultimately a story of coming to terms with what is and what can be, and letting go of what was. This is Regan’s first foray into the Medieval genre, but from what I’ve read, thankfully, it won’t be the last. Very well done Regan Walker, very very well done.

Red Wolf Excerpt: the Red Wolf meets Serena, disguised as the servant, Sarah
Renaud lingered at the high table in the hall until he glimpsed the servant girl with the brown plait carry a pile of linen through the entry heading toward the stairs to the bedchambers. Slowly rising, he nodded to Geoff and followed after her.
Quietly, he stepped through the open door of his chamber. The girl had her back to him as she freshened the bed, the stack of clean linen resting on a nearby chest. He did not acknowledge her but went directly to the trestle table, poured a goblet of wine and sat, pretending to examine a drawing of the lands surrounding the manor.
She turned. “I can come back later, my lord.” She spoke meekly, barely looking at him as she hurriedly finished with the bed and began a hasty retreat to the door.
He replied in the English tongue, as he did to all save his men. “Nay, you may stay. Your work will not disturb me.”
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her back stiffen. Slowly, she retraced her steps and resumed her work. Her movements were rushed as if she were trying to complete her assigned tasks in haste. Was she nervous at being alone with him? Even with that, Renaud thought she was graceful as she walked to the shelves near where he sat. She held her head high, unusual for a servant in the presence of her lord. Though her long plait was the dull color of country earth, her profile was refined and her features delicate. He rose and silently moved to stand behind her where she dusted a carved box.
She must have sensed his approach.
“My lord?” she said, turning to face him.
Blue-violet eyes held his gaze only a moment before looking down at the floor. Set in her ivory face they reminded him of violets in the snow. So mesmerized was he that, for a moment, he forgot his question.
“Your name is Sarah?”
Keeping her eyes focused on the floor, she said, “Yea, my lord.”
“How long have you been at Talisand?”
“All my life, my lord.” Her voice was soft, a low purr, and with her words a flowery scent drifted to his nose. He was captivated and wanted to touch her. How long had it been since he’d had a woman? And this one was causing his manhood to stir.
Turing back to the shelf, she resumed dusting the carved box, as if to put an end to the conversation. His gaze shifted to her hand as she set down the box. Delicate fingers and ivory skin. It was not the hand of a kitchen wench.
“Let me see your hand.” She started at his request, and though he could see she wanted to resist, she did not fight him when he reached for her hand and brought it close to his body turning her palm upward.
It told him much.
“These blisters are new. You have not always worked in the kitchens nor done the wet work of the laundry, have you?”
She shook her head in silent agreement.
“What were your tasks before I came to Talisand?”
Looking down at her feet, she said, “I was with the Lady Serena, my lord.”
“Ah, a lady’s handmaiden then.” So that is where the girl learned to speak so well, for her speech was not that of an ordinary servant nor her manner that of a scullery maid.
He waited for her to say more but when she did not, he said, “Tell me about her.”
She looked up. “What would you know, my lord?” Blue violet eyes held his. He could get lost in those eyes.
“How does she look?”
“She is tall and her hair is the color of summer wheat, my lord.”
“And her character?”
Turning her gaze again to the floor, she hesitated before speaking. “She loves her people and her family, my lord. She is very loyal. Had she been a man, she would have fought with her father at Hastings. Most of all, she loves Talisand and would die for its people.”
Her voice, nearly breaking at the end, told him her words were spoken with deep emotion. She was close to the Lady of Talisand and to the old thegn.
“I’m told her brother took the lord’s place for a time,” he said, hoping she would continue to talk.
She raised her eyes to his. “Yea, Steinar did lead Talisand for a time, but then he was drawn away by other battles.” When she spoke the young man’s name, a tender look came into her eyes. Did she love the old lord’s son? Mayhap she was his leman. The possibility was not to his liking.
Still holding her hand, he looked down at her palm seeing other signs. “These are the calluses of an archer. How is it a lady’s handmaiden comes to use a bow?”
The girl’s eyes shifted to her hand where Renaud had begun moving his thumb across her palm in slow sensual circles. He was not unaffected and, he suspected, neither was she.
“Rhodri taught me, my…my lord.” She spoke in a halting whisper, confirming his touch was disrupting her thoughts. Then she added hastily, “I was not the only one. It was the old lord’s desire that Rhodri should teach all at Talisand who cared to learn.”
Renaud remembered that when the young servant women had been returned to the demesne, Sir Niel had taken several bows from them.
He stopped stroking her palm. She tried to pull back her hand but he had no intention of releasing her. “Who is this Rhodri?”
“He is a Welsh bard, my lord, who is also skilled with a bow. The thegn met him on his travels and invited him here. He lived among us for several years.”
“Where is the Welshman now?”
“I know not, my lord. Peradventure he is in Wales, though his music and his skill with a bow are much in demand. He may yet be in England.”
“A bard and a bowman…an unusual combination.” Renaud frowned in concentration as he considered the idea.
“Not for a Welshman,” she said, matter-of-factly.
Renaud smiled, amused. She was so serious, so insistent, this servant who acted like no servant he’d ever known. “Aye, mayhap you are right. Many Welshmen would have both talents.”
He let go of her hand, but remained close. He knew now what had attracted his men for he, too, was falling under her spell. She was beautiful and well spoken and something about her enticed him. If she had been the leman of this brother of Lady Serena’s or the bard Rhodri, it was possible she was not a maiden and would accept an invitation to come to his bed.

about the author
Regan WalkerI didn’t start out as a writer of romance, oh no. Although I loved to write stories as a child, by the time I got to college, more serious pursuits were encouraged. So, naturally, I became a lawyer. Who needs adverbs as a lawyer? But after years of serving clients in private practice and several stints in high levels of government, I decided it was time for a change. My work had given me a love of international travel (I’ve been to over 40 countries…) and a feel for the demands of the “Crown” on its subjects. Hence, my first novels are all about a demanding Prince Regent who thinks of his subjects as his private talent pool.

I promise my novels will always sweep you away to another time and another place. I want you to experience adventure as well as love.

I live in San Diego with my wonderful Golden Retriever “Link.” I have one son who is a young entrepreneur and, though he looks like a Highlander of old, he would never read a romance novel. So like a man, no?

Flight From Hell (Otherworld 15.5) by Yasmine Galenorn-a review

Flight from Hell (Otherworld Series Novella #15.5) by Yasmine Galenorn-a review

Flight from Hell

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

About the book: Release Date August 19, 2014

Crossover from the Otherworld Series to Fly By Night Series.

New York Times bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn returns with another thrilling foray into Otherworld—introducing a new cast of heroes alongside the D’Artigo sisters…

When the half-demon Carter approaches Menolly and her sisters desperately asking for their help, they think he’s just had a tiff with Shimmer, his blue dragon girlfriend.

But after talking to Alex Radcliffe, the owner of the Fly By Night Magical Investigations Agency where Shimmer works, they suspect that she has been kidnapped by an old enemy of Alex’s.

Now, Alex must join forces with the D’Artigo sisters in a desperate race to find Shimmer before Julian, a powerful vampire from Alex’s past with a grudge to settle, can use the dragon to wreak havoc on Seattle as revenge.

••••••••••••••••••

Review: The help that Carter (who is half Titan, half demon) has given Menolly and her sisters (the D’Artigos) has helped them immensely in their battle with Shadow Wing, so when he calls needing their help, they don’t hesitate. Once he tells them why he’s so worried about Shimmer, they aren’t convinced that there is an actual problem. But, once they head to the Fly By Night Magical Investigations Agency to inquire about Shimmer, it doesn’t take them long to find out that there is indeed something wrong. It seems that Alex, Shimmer’s boss at Fly By Night, had made an enemy long ago and has made his way to Seattle. And, it appears that he will do anything to make Alex pay, including going after his employees. Namely, Shimmer.

When they finally figure out what’s going on, they all head out to try and save Shimmer. And, wouldn’t you know it, seems something is amiss in the perpetually haunted Greenbelt District, aka, Spooksville Central. They eventually find where Shimmer is being held and come up with a plan to get her out. The big problem? She’s being held by a powerful vampire who has company….. Looks like it’s gonna be a long night…..

This novella is a fast paced introduction to Galenorn’s new series and I believe it will be another hit for her. I loved meeting the new characters. Alex, the boss is a vampire. Bette, the assistant is a water spirit and Ralph is a werewolf. And, from what I’ve read, we’re in for a hell of a ride. Even though this is a short story, it was action packed and set up the new series very well. I believe the first novel will be released in July 2015 and I can’t wait! Well done Yasmine Galenorn, well done.

Crave the Night (Midnight Breed Series) #12 by Lara Adrian -a review

Crave the Night

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

About the book: Release Date August 5, 2014

Born and raised to be an emotionless killing machine, Nathan is one of the most lethal Breed vampires in existence. A key member of the Order—an elite group of warriors charged with protecting both mortals and vampires—Nathan executes each mission with flawless precision and a total lack of mercy. Now he must pursue a powerful, hidden enemy. But Nathan’s hard discipline and training are no match for the fierce pull he feels toward a young woman he has no right to desire—a woman of wealth and high social standing who has long been promised to another Breed male, and who may also prove to be the key to rooting out Nathan’s elusive quarry.

Jordana lives a life of glittering privilege as a member of a prominent Breed family in Boston. Surrounded by fine things and fawning admirers, Jordana wants for nothing—until she crosses paths with a dark, intense warrior from the Order and finds herself swept into an impulsive, sizzling kiss that neither of them will forget. As much as she tries to deny her deep feelings for Nathan, Jordana cannot resist the craving to be near him, to break through his forbidding walls and see the man he truly is. But getting close to Nathan will thrust Jordana into a treacherous new world, forcing her to risk all she has and all she knows about herself and her past. And loving this seductive man could be the most dangerous temptation of all.

Review:

Crave the Night begins with Nathan and his team on patrol, as they do every night. Things are happening that has everyone twitchy as they are trying to find out who is behind things that are going awry in the Breed vampire world. We learned in the previous book that there is a new threat. And they are no closer to finding out who it is. All they know is that the clock is ticking. While chasing down leads, Nathan runs across the one woman who he knows he can never have, even though she is the only one he craves.

Jordana has led a privileged and sheltered life. She loves her work at the art museum, and she’s promised to a man that she feels nothing for, other than friendship. When her and Nathan’s paths cross again, she feels that familiar pull to him. She knows she should stay away from him, but she is helpless against the feelings that she has for him. After all, her father would have a fit if she were to step out of line and follow her heart rather than her planned path. But, after a chance encounter with Nathan leaves her breathless, she knows things will never be the same. Once she tells her boyfriend (and I use that term loosely) that she no longer wants to see him, her father is angry, and she doesn’t understand his anger. Then things go really bad. Jordana is kidnapped and Nathan vows to find her and claim her. Repercussions be damned. But first, he and The Order have to figure out who has her and why. That’s when the fun really starts, because no one saw this coming…………..

All I can say is WOW. I absolutely loved everything about this book. Nathan was one of Dragos’ creations, but thankfully his mother Corinne and stepdad, Hunter, rescued him when he was still young enough for them to bring him into the fold of The Order. Even though he is younger than most of The Order, he is still a Gen One and extremely powerful. And sensual. And awesome. He is one of my favorite characters in this series, and that’s saying something. I was a little worried about Jordana at first, but she ended up being a perfect match for Nathan. Her fierce loyalty and determination, and her ultimate “discovery” make her the ultimate mate for him as well. And, I gotta tell ya, I didn’t see that coming. At all. There is so much I want to say about this story, but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. If you are a fan of this series, you know that the story jumped ahead twenty years in the last book, and I was afraid that the integrity of the original characters would be lost. But I was worried for absolutely no reason. Lara Adrian has handled the transition into the future brilliantly, and this book just cements the fact that my original assessment was correct. I never thought that any of these stories would top the originals in this series, but I was wrong. This is one of my top three in the series. Seriously, if you’re not reading Lara Adrian, you need to jump on the bandwagon. There’s plenty of room!! And, I can’t wait for the next installment. Very well done, Lara Adrian, very very well done!!

Silver Shadows by Richelle Mead (Blood Lines Series #5)-a review

Silver Shadows July 14

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

About the book: Release Date: July 29, 2014

In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.

Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.

For Sydney, trapped and surrounded by adversaries, life becomes a daily struggle to hold on to her identity and the memories of those she loves. Meanwhile, Adrian clings to hope in the face of those who tell him Sydney is a lost cause, but the battle proves daunting as old demons and new temptations begin to seize hold of him. . . .

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.

Review:

Very few times have I ever sat down to write a review and can’t come up with the first line. I literally have too many thoughts going through my head about this one. The story picks up shortly after The Fiery Heart ends. Those familiar with the story know that Sydney was taken against her will by the powers that be within the Alchemist organization for becoming too “chummy” with the Moroi (the vampires). If they only knew………….

Sydney was held, and basically tortured psychologically for months. Once she is released from the “cleansing” cell, she knows that she has to play along in order to make the Alchemists believe that she is on the mend and on the path to redemption. She finds herself in the ultimate game of cat and mouse and knows that if she doesn’t play her cards right, she’ll never see the light of day.

Adrian is utterly devastated that he hasn’t been able to contact Sydney in their dreams. Unfortunately, for Adrian, he falls back into his old habit of drinking to numb the pain. He begins to lose hope, and then there’s a knock at the door. I don’t know who was more shocked when he opened the door, him or me!! He is whisked back to Court and tries to enlist the help of their queen and his friend, Lissa and her guardian, Rose. But, Lissa knows that it’s a slippery slope and can’t risk her fragile reign to go up against the Alchemists when it isn’t one of her subjects in danger.

Despair descends on Adrian and he soon descends into a routine that he knows all too well: drinking and partying. Thankfully, the pity party doesn’t last long and he’s able to finally connect with Sydney and knows that she is alive! However, the one thing he needs to know is very elusive. He needs to know where she is and she has no idea. Adrian springs into action and heads back to Palm Springs and a plan is formed. He enlists the help everyone who will listen to him, and soon enough, the plan is enacted. Will they truly be able to get to Sydney in time? Will their crew be able to get in and get her out? Oh my friends, you’ll have to read to find out. Because as fans of this series know all too well, there isn’t always a happy ending…………

Richelle Mead is a phenomenal author. Her YA series, Vampire Academy (which Bloodlines spun off of), is one of my absolute favorites and I never thought that I’d like this particular series as well as that one. Well, I’m a big girl and can admit that I was wrong!! She has a different spin on vampires and the world and it more than works. It works WELL! Her supporting characters, all of which we get to see in Silver Shadows, are such an integral part of the story, but you never feel overwhelmed with the amount of information that IS this story. I wish that I could share more about some of the things that happened in this one, but don’t want to spoil it for anyone. You also don’t have the quintessential love triangle in this series as you normally get in a lot of YA series. At least, not with the main characters.

All of Mead’s books grab you on the first page, and this was no exception. This one was a bit brutal in the Alchemist’s treatment of Sydney and her fellow detainees, but was necessary to portray just how far the Alchemists will go to get what they want. If you’ve not read Mead, you are missing out on a fabulous ride. And, even though it’s YA, I can’t fathom anyone who is a fan of paranormal with a twist not liking this series. The downside? I have to wait on the next and I cannot wait. Well done Richelle Mead, very very very well done!!

About the book:

Chessy and Tate have been married for several years. In the beginning, their relationship was everything she wanted. Passionate. All consuming. She offered her submission freely and Tate cherished her gift with a tenderness that made her feel safe. Content. Wanted. And loved beyond all measure. But as the years have gone by, Tate has become more immersed in making his business the success it has become, and Chessy has taken a back seat to his business obligations. Growing unhappier with the status of their once blissful marriage, Chessy knows that something has to give. Or they stand to lose it all

Tate loves his wife. Has always loved her. Providing for her has always been his number one priority. But lately she’s seemed unhappy, and he’s worried. Worried enough that he arranges for a night together that he hopes will reignite the fire that once burned like an inferno between them.

But a business call at the wrong time threatens everything. Chessy’s safety, his concentration, his wife’s faith in him as her husband, a man sworn to love and protect her above all else. Gutted with the realization that he’s going to lose her—has already lost her—he readies for the fight of his life. Whatever it takes, he’ll get her back. And prove to her that nothing is more important than her love. And that if she’ll allow him to prove himself one more time, he’ll take it all. Everything. But he’ll give far more back. Himself. His undying love.

Review:
To say that Tate screwed up royally is quite an understatement. I’ve known all along, while reading the first two books in this trilogy, that Chessy and Tate’s book would be intense. After all, she is his submissive and those tend to be intense stories as a rule, but when we see what happens when Tate totally drops the ball and breaks the number one rule of being a dominate………….Let’s just say “cringe-worthy” just does not do it justice. Her safety and care is supposed to be his utmost priority, but as the blurb about the books says, “……..a business call at the wrong time threatens everything”. Not only does it threaten Chessy’s safety, it also threatens to destroy their relationship. Because for a time, it DID destroy her faith and utter trust in him.

I read an interview recently that Maya Banks had given. In it, she said that she has always been interested in writing stories that happen AFTER the couple’s initial HEA. Because, let’s face it. Most everyone’s relationships are great in the beginning, but then life happens and things kind of fall to the wayside. Taking it All IS that story. Tate was so consumed with work the he let his relationship with Chessy take a backseat. And, after that ‘business call at the wrong’ time happens, I honestly thought, even if for just a minute, that they might not be able to get past what happened. Because what happens was shocking to me. Like, screaming at my Kindle shocking……… I literally didn’t think I could get past it and like Tate again. But, I warmed up to him. Only after a lot of groveling on his part! LOL!!

Maya Banks has once again written a gripping story that is ultimately about the long, bumpy road back to each other and forgiveness. And redemption. If you are a fan of Maya Banks, you will not be disappointed. And, as I’ve said before, if you’re not reading Maya’s stories, you’re sorely missing out!! I just hope that in the future, we might get to see a glimpse of the awesome people we met in this trilogy. Well done Maya Banks!!

Review:

Wow is the first word that comes to mind. Cheating Justice begins with Mitch Monroe meeting with one of the few people in the world whom he knows he can trust. But when that person ends up dead and Mitch’s face is plastered all over the news as wanted for his murder, he knows he has to step up his game and figure out what is going on and why they are involving him. He makes the hard decision to go to the one person who can help him. Or, break his heart…………….

Caroline has her path plotted. Top sniper? Check. S.W.A.T.? Working on it. Dots her I’s and crosses her T’s? Absolutely. So, why then, when Mitch Monroe shows up does she feel the need to help him? Yes, she knows he’s an innocent man. But, when he tries to enlist her help to not clear himself, but to clear one of his best friends who has been murdered, she has one answer for him. No. Yeah right…………

Cheating Justice pulls you in from the beginning. Mitch Monroe is an awesome person who you find yourself cheering for from the first time you meet him. His angst over his friends’ demise lets you get a glimpse of the real Mitch. Well, part of him. The other part….the sarcastic, smart, sexy part is the first thing you notice, but once the story progresses, you see more layers developing right before your eyes. Caroline made me laugh out loud, literally. She’s always threatening to shoot folks who tic her off. Yes, she’s buttoned up and a very astute agent, but as with Mitch, you see her layers developing as well. It doesn’t take her long to figure out that maybe the straight and narrow might not be all it’s cracked up to be. And, the chemistry between the two? Smoking hot!!!

The action in this book is awesome as well! I couldn’t wait to see what happened next as I was reading it. I will say, though, that I did get a little blurry eyed trying to remember who all the bad guys were and how they were all tied together. But, in the end?? Awesome story!! Had no idea this was part of a series, but I will tell you, based on this one, I’d love to go back and read the first one and can’t wait for the second. Well done ladies, very well done.

excerpt

“I always said you had the best ass in the FBI.”
Her body froze. Eleven months, five days and—she did the math—twelve hours had passed since she’d heard that voice. The one she’d thought about time and again after his last brief visit to her apartment, and she still managed to be equal parts pissed off, concerned and flat-out heartbroken. That voice could only belong to one person. Thus the remark about her ass and—wow—she always knew he had a set of stones, but this was too much even for Mitch Monroe. The man she’d spent all these months trying to forget. Months of burying herself in cases, months of begging her boss for every available opportunity to keep her mind occupied, months of a busy life that didn’t allow for downtime.
Or thoughts of Mitch.
Without turning, she picked up her weapon. “Well, look what the cat dragged in. A girl puts her career on the line for you and you don’t call, you don’t write, nothing. To say the least, your technique needs work.”
And then he laughed. She’d waited months to hit him with that line and he laughed. Classic Mitch. She closed her eyes and—forget that he was a federal fugitive now wanted for murder—she’d kill him herself and be done with the whole affair.
Mitch, a murderer? She couldn’t believe it. No matter what the White House was spinning about Kemp Rodgers’ death, Mitch wouldn’t kill his friend.
Then, again, she’d been Mitch’s friend once…
Finally, she turned, bracing herself for whatever disguise might greet her, but found none. Brave.
As usual.
She took in his long brown hair pulled back in a low ponytail, his dark eyes and ripped jeans, and shook her head. “You’re insane for coming here.”
He shrugged. “It’s a private range. Not like I walked into Quantico.”
It wasn’t enough that he’d almost destroyed her career when he’d first started working The Lion case, now he wanted to have a second go at it. He was a fugitive wanted for murder and she was an FBI agent. She should arrest him.
Yet, she stood waiting for him to say something that would make a damned difference. I’m sorry? I didn’t do it? Anything that would erase the idea that he could have murdered his friend.
She set her rifle on the table behind her, slid the bolt open. Not loaded. She knew it wasn’t, but she checked anyway. Always.
Mitch shuffled behind her.
Too bad. He could wait like she’d waited for him all these months.
Her canvas carry case sat on the bench seat. Like many people, she preferred canvas over hard plastic because the softer material didn’t make the rifle sweat. She dug through the case for her lens covers, popped them on, set the rifle into the case—bolt upward—and zipped it.
She’d clean the rifle later. For her, keeping a weapon in top working order meant cleaning it after every use. Even if only one shot had been fired, her weapons got cleaned. Every time.
She sensed Mitch moving closer, stirring the air around her, upsetting the energy, letting her know he was near. He had that way about him. Sometimes good, sometimes not.
“I need your help.”
Of course he did. Should have known. Radio silence for eleven months and now he wanted her help. “I should shoot you and dump your body in the Reflecting Pool.”
“Yeah, you should.”
She spun and—crack!—smacked him, sending his head sideways and making her hand sting. She’d never physically attacked anyone before and she couldn’t say it felt right or just, but unleashing it felt good. To let him know he’d hurt her. “We were friends. I helped you and you disregarded me.”
“Disregarded you?” Mitch slid a hand over his cheek. “I’ve stayed away and I’m sorry. But what, Caroline? You want to do lunch or hit the shooting range with me? A guy wanted for assaulting your boss and now a federal fugitive?” Gently, he knocked on her head. “Think about it. I was protecting you.”
She didn’t need his protection. “I’m mad at you.”
“Atta girl.”
God, he was annoying. “You had a good reason to take a swing at Donaldson when he threatened you during The Lion case, but honest to God, Mitch, I think he should have swung back and ended it right there instead of trying to throw you in jail. But you should have manned up and never run from the charges, so whatever this is, I can’t help you.”
“Tommy Nusco.”
“You murdered him, too?”
Surprisingly, he blanched. “I didn’t kill anyone. I need to know what went down with Tommy.”
Oh, please. He really had lost his mind if he thought she’d touch that subject. That involved ATF and the State of New Mexico and she wasn’t about to step into that snake pit. “You better worry about what went down with Kemp Rodgers and why the White House is after you. Turn yourself in, Mitch.”
“Kemp told me the White House is buzzing about Executive Privilege being invoked on Tommy’s case. A few hours later, he’s dead. Put two and two together, Caroline. There’s a cover-up in the works and what happened to Tommy is at the heart of it.”
She faced him, still hating that he stood a good six inches taller and managed to make her feel small. She folded her arms and stepped forward, got right into his space. “No.”
“Whatever they’re concocting about Tommy is bullshit.”
“I don’t know that.”
“Yeah, you do. When we all worked together, we hung out. You knew him.”
“Not that well.”
He rolled his eyes in that typical I’m-Mitch-Monroe-and-I’m-bored way of his. “He was not dirty. Whatever he was doing, the government is letting a dead agent take the heat. Why not? He’s dead anyway. Doesn’t matter that he was a decorated officer. The government obviously needs to clean up a mess and—” he inched closer, tilted his head and stared right into her eyes “—I know all about how the government cleans up a mess.”
Back away. She should, but that would play into what he wanted. He wanted to control this conversation. His looming presence used to be enough that she’d give him that control.
Not this time.
She tilted her head the opposite direction, eased out a half-smile. “Mitch?”
“Yes?”
“Screw you.”
She turned her back to him and scooped up her rifle case. Right now, she needed to walk away and not let him talk her into something that would wreck her career.
