A JAGUAR’S KISS by Katie Reus

A JAGUAR’S KISS is the latest novella from Katie Reus and the October 1, 2012 release in her paranormal romance line of books.

Gabriela (Gabby) Segura hadn’t been home to Bear Mountain Montana in close to 5 years. With the recent loss of her entire CIA team, Gabby needed some down time and reluctantly decided to head home, but she was unaware that there were problems between the shifters in town-Gabby walked into a storm of anger. Jaguars had been attacking humans and Gabby was a jaguar shifter. When the brother of her ex-boyfriend pulled a gun, she knew it had been a mistake to come home. The last thing she wanted was to get involved with Owen Wright and his family of wolves- Owen had broken her heart when she was 16 years old and now she was taken hostage by his younger brother.

Owen and Ethan Wright were wolf shifters, and Owen had a past with Gabriela Segura. As the new Alpha of the Wright pack, it was Owen’s responsibility to keep his wolves under control, but realizing his brother had kidnapped the only woman he had ever loved, Owen was beyond angry. He hadn’t spoken to Gabby in 10 years when he left to join the army, and now he was convinced that her family knew who was behind the killings. But first he needed to know why she left him all those years ago. And a surprise announcement would find both families joined together in more than just a hunt.

Owen is convinced that Gabby is his mate, but Gabby is mourning the loss of her friends. She is unwilling to, once again, open herself up to the man whom she blames for breaking her heart on the eve of her 16th birthday. She is willing to offer him ONE night together but Owen wants a life time. As the hunt for the elusive jaguar continued, to Gabby’s surprise she discovered the reason behind the attacks and would find herself fighting for her life.

A JAGUAR’S KISS is another wonderful storyline in Katie Reus paranormal romance storylines from Nocturne Cravings and Harlequin. This particular line of shifter stories is a series of stand-alones but can be grouped together. Katie writes a fast-paced short story where the central characters have a mutual but stormy history-therefore there is no need to prolong the inevitable. I enjoy Katie’s series of short stories-they are a perfect read before you go to bed.

All Hallows Moon by S.M. Reine-a review

ALL HALLOWS MOON (Seasons of the Moon #2) by S.M. Reine

ALL HALLOWS MOON is the second instalment in S.M Reine’s young adult Seasons of the Moon series focusing on a young bitten female werewolf and the hunters trying to take her down. This storyline is not your typical werewolf scenario-there are no glittery or easy transitions from human to wolf, but one fraught with pain, suffering, blood and loss of humanity. Rylie is a 15 year old high school student who, while away at summer camp, fought to save the life of a friend, but ended up bitten by a werewolf hoping to repopulate his decimated pack. Rylie must now endure the monthly moon shifts alone knowing that the one person who could take her life, is the one person she was willing to give up her humanity to save.

Rylie went to live with her late father’s sister, a woman she has not seen in a very long time. Aunt Gwyneth owned a working farm, and the family thought it was best if Rylie learned discipline while doing manual labor. Thinking the young teen was acting out rebelliously Rylie would find herself in trouble at school, at home and with friends. But what people did not know was that Rylie was affected by the changes of the moon, and every day life became a challenge when your inner wolf wants nothing more than to sate a need for blood and meat.

Rylie’s changes left her with no humanity. Waking up with no memory of the nights events, Rylie would discover that her wolf had devoured local livestock at a frenetic pace. The kills were drawing attention and soon the werewolf hunters would be searching for what could only be described as a killer. Although she has never killed a human, Rylie always worried that she may not be able to control the beast. But when the hunters come calling, her wolf perceives a threat and she fights to protect her life. Only this time, one of the hunters is determined to kill Rylie in human form regardless of the hunter’s code.

ALL HALLOWS MOON is an interesting look at a werewolf storyline. The heroine is your typical 15 year old teen, although more rebellious than most, due to her ‘wolf’ acting out aggressively towards perceived threats. One wrong look could produce a growl of displeasure and therefore her number of friends is limited because of her attitude and personality quirks-even her family sent her away because they were unable to handle the mood swings and aggression. Rylie’s relationship with one of hunters throws a major wrench into the storyline, when his family is willing to kill the werewolf, knowing he has fallen in love with the girl underneath. I did have a problem with the Rylie’s attitude. Yes, I know she was struggling with the assault that left her a werewolf and the painful and gut wrenching monthly changes-but the girl just never let up-the entire story was built on the attitude of a 15 year old who perceived everything as a slight against her. Sometimes it was a little too much.

FULL BLOODED (Jessica McClain #1) by Amanda Carlson-a review

FULL BLOODED (Jessica McClain #1) by Amanda Carlson-a review

FULL BLOODED (Jessica McClain #1) by Amanda Carlson

FULL BLOODED is the first novel (September 2012 release) in Amanda Carlson’s new Jessica McClain series focusing on the life of the only female werewolf in existence. There is a pre-quel novella BLOODED (released April 2012) introducing Jessica and her pack and the stories surrounding the Cain Myth-foretelling that a female werewolf would be born as the ‘daughter of evil’. Only Jessica McClain was born to be so much more.

On her own for the past 7 years, Jessica has kept under the radar working as a PI since leaving the pack for her own protection.  With only her family and a couple friends aware of her location, Jessica will find she is all alone when her inner-wolf decides it is time to come out and the ramifications will be sensed and felt within the supernatural world, letting the ‘others’ know that she truly exists. Now she is the ultimate prize in a war between the sects.

Jessica’s existence is an anomaly.  No females were ever conceived let alone should exist, but the prophecy had foretold of a female to be born with powers that were to be feared.  The history and lore of the ‘were’ would reveal a story of a werewolf with powers so similar to Jessica’s, that even many of her own pack mates feared her presence. And now, an ancient warrior, a were of a different species, had found Jessica and their connection would throw both of them into a world of chaos and need.

Running from her own kind was only the start of Jessica’s troubles. Multiple packs with tentative treaties will declare war against each other for the right to possess and destroy the Alpha’s only daughter. Vampires, witches and a sorceress converge in a battle that will see the wolves turn against one another, a sorceress spurned, a horde of vampires following the demands of their Queen and a wolf’s mate revealed to the pack.

Full Blooded is told from the heroine’s POV, and the continuous internal battle with her wolf is both comedic and intriguing.  Amanda Carlson takes the reader into the mind of a shape-shifter as she discovers the little nuances that both separate and bind them together.  A father’s love for his only daughter and a brother’s love for his twin will ensure that Jessica is protected at all times, but sometimes love is not enough when there are more powerful players in the game. FULL BLOODED is a fantastic novel by a talented first time author.  If you are a fan of Kelley Armstrong or Patricia Briggs, you will recognize the familiar.

NO HUMANS INVOLVED (WOTO #7) by Kelley Armstrong-a review

NO HUMANS INVOLVED by Kelley Armstrong

NO HUMANS INVOLVED (Women of the Otherworld #7) by Kelley Armstrong

NO HUMANS INVOLVED is the 7th full length novel in Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series. Featuring Jaime Vegas and Alpha leader Jeremy Danvers, No Humans Involved will see Jaime get her man/wolf, and we will see a side of Jeremy that we never knew existed.

As a television personality renowned for her ability to ‘speak to the dead’ necromancer Jaime Vegas was invited to participate in a live televised taping of with some of the best in the business, but little did anyone know, that Jaime is the only true necromancer and she has uncovered a mysterious burial ground right under their noses.

Relaying the information to Elena, Jaime would find help in the form of American Pack Alpha Jeremy Danvers-a man she has been struggling to get him to acknowledge her existence. But every time she is in his presence her inner geek and dufus take over. And to her surprise Jeremy will reveal that he has noticed Jaime for several years, but his duties and his quiet reserve have held him back.

Jaime and Jeremy will uncover a cult-like group of people hoping to bring the dead back to life. But while they are searching for the grounds outside the hotel, they will uncover a mass grave of young children, long thought to be runaways or missing.

Eve Levine and Kristof Nash return to help Jaime communicate with the spirits of the children and help them crossover: Karl is called in when Hope and Jaime go missing and find themselves imprisoned by the ones hoping to gain power using an ancient ritual: and Jeremy and Jaime’s relationship will take the next step when Jaime finds herself the girlfriend to the American Alpha.

NO HUMANS INVOLVED is one of my favorite storylines in Kelley’s WOTO series. I am a fan of the werewolves and Jeremy tugs at my heart. When he finally finds his mate, he is NOT your typical alpha male but it takes a strong feminine woman like Jaime to tame his inner beast. Jaime’s seduction of Jeremy is one of the smexiest seductions in Kelley Armstrong’s WOTO series.

FEAR THE DARKNESS (Guardians of Eternity #9) by Alexandra Ivy

FEAR THE DARKNESS (Guardians of Eternity #9) by Alexandra Ivy

FEAR THE DARKNESS (Guardians of Eternity #9 ) by Alexandra Ivy

FEAR THE DARKNESS by Alexandra Ivy is the 9th novel (August 28, 2012 release) in her Guardians of Eternity series. Although the couple in question, for this particular storyline, is the Were Caine and his Prophet mate Cassandra (Cassie), the main premise of this particular novel is stopping the Dark Lord.

Alexandra involves many of her previous storyline characters including Styx, Roke, Viper, Gaius, Salvatore and Levet for the ultimate show of strength when the Dark Lord must face those hoping to close the rift between the veil and the Otherside. Several parallel storylines will coalesce in the final chapters, leaving a grieving mate with more than he bargained, the possibility of peace between Vampire and Were, and the mortality and whereabouts of one of the most feared and powerful beings in question.

Gaius has long sought to be reunited with his deceased mate-Dara, but a mistake made long ago has trapped him beyond the veil in servitude and slavery to the Dark Lord. A promise never forgotten, Gaius continues to play the clown to the Dark Lord’s demands, but the promise of being reunited with Dara has come at a cost. Sentenced to spend eternity serving evil, Gaius knows he must make amends to those he has betrayed but forgiveness will be a nightmare. Only this time, the Dark Lord will follow every move he makes and Gaius will become the pawn that will help the Dark Lord join the Alpha and Omega, once again making the Dark Lord the most powerful supernatural being. But an ominous warning from the Prophet will be lost to Gaius, when the very thing he wanted, may not be exactly what he gets.

Caine suspects Cassie is his mate, but the naïve and innocent Cassandra is only aware that her internal wolf wants Caine’s Were. The call to mate is strong between the couple, but Caine knows his first duty is to protect the Prophet and keep her from the Dark Lord. When he previously rescued the Prophet, he knew his duty, but realizing Cassie was his mate, made the idea of losing her to the Dark Lord that much more dangerous. But when the couple find themselves trapped behind the veil, it is Caine who is caught in the throws of a spell that has no apparent cure. But it will take the love of a very brave mate to tame the beast that wants none other than to kill everything in its path. And Cassie’s visions eventually turn black when the Dark Lord has what it wants.

Throughout the storyline, Styx (King of All Vampires) charges the Clan leaders with the orders to take up arms. Were and Vampire must unite, with imps and fey in order to close the portal between the worlds, only the rifts continue to grow as the Dark Lord increases in power. The Alpha and Omega are to be reunited so that the Gemini will rise, but the power of the Phoenix will get a little help from a an unbelievable source, when the Prophet’s vision reveals a reluctant warrior in the shape of a forgotten gargoyle.

FEAR THE DARKNESS is a fascinating and detailed storyline that re-unites many of the players and family members if only for a few minutes at a time. Personalities and egos will clash, as well as the eternal war between the species, but in order to save the world, sometimes prejudices and fears must be put aside. Another wonderful instalment in Alexandra Ivy’s Guardians of Eternity series.

The Alpha’s Mate (The Wolvers #1) by Jacqueline Rhoades

THE ALPHA’S MATE (The Wolvers #1) by Jacqueline Rhoades

THE ALPHA’S MATE by Jacqueline Rhoades

THE ALPHA’S MATE is the first storyline (May 2012 release) in The Wolvers series by Jacqueline Rhoades.

Former librarian 32year old Elizabeth Reynolds was on sabbatical and moving to Rabbit Creek. Locating her new place was a bit of a nightmare, but finding herself in the arms of a complete stranger made everything worthwhile. With her car stuck in the mud and strange animals in the forest, Elizabeth hope she hadn’t made an awful mistake. Spending the night at a complete stranger’s home would take on a whole new meaning when she found herself fighting off a pack of wolves while a fire raged all around.

Marshall Goodman is the chief of police, owns the local specialty mill and alpha male of the pack. His attraction to Elizabeth is instant, but the signals she is sending are confusing all of the males.  At some point, Elizabeth is under the mistaken notion that Marshall is already in a committed relationship with his cousin Henry, but it is Marshall who believes she knows they are wolves.

Elizabeth was introduced to the local folks but Charles Goodman, Marshall’s brother seemed to take a special interest in the new resident of Rabbit Creek. Thinking that Marshall was gay, Elizabeth made a half-hearted attempt at seduction, but realized that Charles wasn’t the man for her.  But when a beaten and bloody woman is found in her front yard, Elizabeth must contact Marshall hoping to save the young woman’s life.  And to Elizabeth’s amazement, she will find a shifting wolf that was once Marshall Goodman.  But it will be the women of the Creek that take Elizabeth aside and tell her the story of their wolves.

There was a fight brewing for wolver territory and Alpha.  Fires, assaults and bullets wounds would find Elizabeth with a house full of shifters and an injured wolf to care.  Marshall was the Alpha and he had to protect his wolves and his territory, and for all intents and purposes, Elizabeth was his to protect.

Elizabeth was an unexpected gift to the Alpha and his Pack. They told her tales of their matings and stories about the townsfolk, and Elizabeth decided to write a story of their lives-without the paranormal content. But Marshall also had a job to do and the marijuana grow-ops were taxing his time and his men.

Charles made it a point to introduce himself to Elizabeth’s family. Suave and sophisticated, Charles hoped to find a mate in Elizabeth, and something about the man drew her like a moth to a flame. As the alpha of his own Pack, Charles was committed to moving forward and modernizing their ways, but animosity between the brothers ran deep and long.

The fight for possession would turn personal. When Marshall was injured trying to protect Elizabeth, it was Max ( the young woman found injured) who would explain the reason for the alpha rage.  There was something about Elizabeth that drew the other alpha males around but the circumstances had changed and now it was an act of revenge.

The Goodman family had a gift.  As Alpha, Marshall’s gift was needed whenever there were injuries and wounded wolves, but there was no one around when Marshall needed help.  Elizabeth knew that only one other male in the family would be capable to heal the man that she loved, and by calling him in, she may have sealed her fate. But Elizabeth believed she was no Alpha’s Mate and insisted it had all been a mistake.

A challenge had been issued for the Alpha position, the Pack and its’ mate, and Elizabeth was the prize.  When another alpha claimed the rights by an ancient Pack law, it was up to Elizabeth to figure a way to save Marshall, the Pack and her life. A little research and a couple of friends in high places, Elizabeth found a loophole that would hopefully benefit Marshall’s pack and see the rightful Alpha back in charge.

THE ALPHA’S MATE is a romantic adventure about a Pack looking for a mate (for its’ Alpha) and thinking they had found her in Elizabeth Reynolds. The major character development is smooth, but there are a number of secondary players that get lost in the mix.  Sometimes too many characters and names make for a confusing storyline and at times I had to go back and double check.

Jacqueline’s version of the mating heat adds a twist that at times had me worried as to the direction our heroine was heading, but in the end, the Alpha finds his mate and his heart.  The Alpha’s Mate looks at the magical allure of the shifter wolf and why we love our storybook alpha males.  A great start to another series by Jacqueline Rhoades.

BROKEN (WOTO #6) by Kelley Armstrong-WOTO Challenge

BROKEN-WOMEN OF THE OTHERWORLD #6-by Kelley Armstrong

August is the 6th month in the Women of the Otherworld Challenge hosted by MOONLIGHT GLEAM’S BOOKSHELF. THIRTEEN (released July 2012) was the final full-length novel for Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series while the author puts Elena, Clay and Savannah on hiatus. This month’s challenge is BROKEN.

BROKEN by Kelley Armstrong-a review

BROKEN is the 6th novel in Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series. BROKEN continues the story of Elena, Clay and the other werewolves, but this time Elena is pregnant. As the only known female werewolf, Elena isn’t sure what to expect—literally. But when someone from her past calls in a favor, Elena knows this could be her final chance for adventure, before giving birth.

Ever since Elena Michaels discovered she was pregnant, she has been unable to concentrate. As the months pass and the pregnancy advances, shape-shifting, her ability to fight and running with the other Pack members has become increasingly difficult and worrisome. Without the benefit of prior knowledge or experience, Elena, Clay and Jeremy are cautious and reticent—if news were to spread about her pregnancy, she would become a bigger target than just Clay’s mate. When Xavier Reese, a former ‘inmate ‘ from Ty Winsloe’s compound of supernatural beings, calls in a favor, Elena jumps at the chance for the distraction. Xavier has been commissioned to find and retrieve the “From Hell” letter, supposedly one of the last known pieces of evidence and DNA from Jack the Ripper, but he requires Elena’s expertise—basically, the werewolves are the only beings who could pass through the sorcerer’s ‘spell’ protecting the document. One problem-the “From Hell” letter is currently owned by Patrick Shanahan, a sorcerer living in Toronto, and there are many ‘beings’ looking for the “letter”.

Once the letter is in their possession, a series of catastrophic events take place in the Canadian city. Witnesses report missing people, zombie-like beings, an outbreak of cholera and typhoid as well as a string of unexplained murders. It is not until the trio learns that part of the curse of the ‘From Hell’ letter, that whom ever is in possession, must make a ‘blood sacrifice’ to trigger the release of “Jack”, do they realize they may be responsible for the strange events happening in the city. And the only blood sacrifice that was made—Elena killed a mosquito containing her own blood. Meanwhile, a confused and lost soul exits the portal into the 21st century

With the blood sacrifice, a portal is opened into the otherworld, where zombies exit and people fall victim to its’ curse. But while tracking and fighting the zombies, Clay’s arm is puncture by one of the ‘undead’ and without thought of the consequences, he ignores his wounds. Without giving away too much of the plot, zombie scratches can be fatal, and a very sick and ailing Clay has only a couple of options—amputate the arm or die from infection.

When a very pregnant Elena is abducted, they come to realize, that Elena is now the target and no longer the ‘letter’. Clay and Elena’s children will be the ultimate sacrifice in a game of evil, between the mystery man from the portal and zombies wreaking havoc throughout Toronto.

Once again, Kelley introduces a few new supernatural beings such as Zoe Takana , a female vampire with eyes for Elena, and brings back the characters we love. Nick and Antonio Sorrentino are called to Canada to assist with the hunt for “Jack the Ripper”, and Jaime Vegas, a beautiful clairvoyant and necromancer (and a burr up Clay’s backside), aids the werewolves with the eradication and the return of the ‘undead’ back to their own time.

Broken is one of my favorite Women of the Otherworld storylines. Clay’s spiral into a fevered delirium is not without its’ scary moments and we watch Elena and Clay become a family with the birth of their child(ren) as we are drawn deeper into the lives of everyone involved. The birthing scene is heart warming and humorous, and you can almost hear the panic in their voices. Paige as their ‘long-distance’ birthing coach is something that can only be imagined by a writer like Kelley.

Vampire Vacation by CJ Ellisson-a review

Vampire Vacation (The V.V. Inn #1) and Just One Taste by CJ Ellison-a review

VAMPIRE VACATION (The V.V.Inn Book 1) by C.J.Ellisson

NOTE: Series contains Mature Adult Content

VAMPIRE VACATION is the first book in C.J.Ellisson’s V.V.Inn series focusing on the adventures of Vivian Alexandria-a 580+ year old ancient vampire with a special ability. Located in Alaska, the V.V.Inn caters to the supernatural side of humanity including vampires and werewolves, where Vivian makes all of their fantasies come true ala Fantasy Island. Vivian is the epitome of sexual desire and oozes enough sex appeal to invoke the imaginations of the guests. But Vivian specializes in manipulation, and her ability makes the guests see and hear, what she wants them to see. As the only remaining ‘manipulator’ of her kind, Vivian aka Dria has the power to control even the most ancient and her past history as an enforcer has placed her on the top of the feeding chain when it comes to power and fear. But not everyone is happy with Vivian’s success.

Vivian’s long time mate and husband Rafe stands beside his wife at all times. Although he is not a supernatural, Rafe consumes enough vampire blood to keep up with his wife’s demands and very busy lifestyle. Without a Seethe, Vivian is virtually a one-woman machine. She has never felt the need to accumulate vampires or servants to follow her every command. But events at the V.V.Inn have turned fatal when a dead body is found in one of the guest rooms, and no one can account for his identity and how he was able to find his way into the Inn unnoticed. Security at the Inn will have to be updated and increased, and a new member will soon be added to Vivian’s small family at the Inn.

Several factors begin to fall into place, when Vivian begins to notice that some of her new guests are hiding secrets. But with her powers, she will eventually discern the identity and what precipitated the dead man’s appearance. And what Vivian finds will send shock waves through the Inn.

Jonathan is a werewolf who has worked with Vivian and Rafe for 7 years. Knowing Vivian is happily mated to Rafe, has not stopped Jon’s feelings for the ancient vampire. Never mated, Jon was hoping that perhaps Vivian would change her mind, but Rafe and Vivian’s relationship is based on love and no matter the circumstances, Rafe will always come first with Vivian.

We are introduced to several of the Inn’s employees including Paul the chef-one of the few humans who has not requested that he be a donor. But Paul has a family and does not wish to risk their lives, so he prefers to keep his personal and private life separate. But events at the Inn will place everyone in danger when the person suspected of murder begins to attack those closest to Vivian and her family.

In the end, Vivian will have the Seethe she never wanted and Rafe will be happier with the security recommendations of an ex-military soldier who now spends his life as the undead. Vivian is a heroine who knows what she wants, takes no prisoners and tells it like it is. Vampire Vacation is a great start to C.J. Ellisson’s The V.V. Inn series, and I am looking forward to all of her books.

JUST ONE TASTE by CJ Elisson

JUST ONE TASTE is a pre-quel short story, approximately one chapter in length and focuses on Vivian as she re-unites with Rafe after more than a decade apart. At the present we are not sure what has happened between the two, but there is a definite sexual attraction and one that Vivian (aka Dria) does not want to pursue.

Dria is a 580year old female vampire with the special ability to manipulate reality, and an ability that is far too powerful in many eyes. But JUST ONE TASTE does not reflect the power that Dria can wield especially when a man from her past needs a place to stay for the night. Raphael was a young 17year old boy when Dria walked away from his mother’s ‘yoga’ studio but the attraction between the couple has never waivered in all those years. Rafe has apparently sought out Dria, and is willing to take their ‘friendship’ to the next level.

JUST ONE TASTE is exactly that-just one taste or small snippet – a quick look back to when Dria and Rafe first re-connected. Now that they are husband and wife, their adventures at the Vampire Inn continue with each storyline. If I am not mistaken, CJ’s new novel will focus on the backstory (pre-quel) of Vivian and Rafe.
