Review:

Ghost Maker by Robin D. Owens is the 5th book in her Ghost Seer series.  Ghost Maker begins not too long after Ghost Talker left off.   Clare still has an injury caused by an evil ghost, and nothing the she or Zach, or even Enzo (their ghost dog spirit) do can fix the injury.   While she slowly tries to recover, Clare continues to take on cases to allow people to speak to their loves that have passed on or help ghosts who need to move on to heaven.  Zach worries about Clare’s injury, as he can see her health deteriorating.

Zach becomes involved in a mystery about a missing boy.  At the same time, they find out that there is a healer, who may be able to help Clare.  They to Manitou Springs, Colorado to look for the ghost healer.  Sister Juilana Emmanuel cannot move on, since she feels she must take care of the other ghosts, and help the young boys being tortured by an evil ghost.  Clare will try to work with Sister Juliana to help the boys and find the ghost who inhabits another person’s body.

The case intensifies with more deaths of young boys, and Zach’s case comes closer to finding the missing boy. What follows is an exciting story with Clare putting herself at risk to find the killer, and helping Sister Juliana.

Enzo plays a big part in helping Clare, and I adore this ghost dog; he is so much fun.  I can actually feel the cold when he goes through Clare.  J   In Ghost Maker, the romance between Zach and Clare escalates to more scorching sexual encounters, and they do have hot chemistry. As much as I love Clare and Enzo, and the recurring supporting characters, at times I do get annoyed with Zach.  He is stubborn, and comes across as unlikable at times, though he does love Clare.

Once again, Robin D. Owens does a great job continuing the flow of Clare becoming more and more content in her seer abilities and to want to help ghosts move on to heaven. These are fun stories that take place in western towns, with ghosts usually from the same era in the old west.  I suggest you read the first book in this series to be able to understand how Clare slowly evolves.

One Red Rose by Julie Garwood – a Review

One Red Rose by Julie Garwood – a Review

One Red RoseAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
The Claybornes are back — and love is in bloom! First introduced in Julie Garwood’s magnificent New York Times bestseller “For the Roses,” which inspired the Hallmark Hall of Fame television film “Rose Hill,” the Clayborne brothers of Blue Belle, Montana, have been embraced by millions worldwide. Now Julie Garwood spins the individual stories of these three spirited brothers — once a mismatched gang of street urchins — in a trio of special novels that continues with “One Red Rose.” Adam Clayborne has always put great stock in the power of books. As an escaped slave — and a wanted man — reading has been his only ticket to the wonders of distant lands. Adam is content with his life as a confirmed bachelor, which is why his Mama Rose has summoned the irresistible Genevieve Delacroix to Montana. Also a former slave, Genevieve shares his dream of seeing the world, but she arrives to find Adam unfailingly polite…and just as distant. Undaunted, Genevieve determines to teach Adam what he’ll never learn from a book — that true freedom only comes when you open your heart.

Review:

One Red Rose by Julie Garwood is the 4th book in her Clayborne Brides series, which includes a three book novella.  In One Red Rose, Adam Clayborne returns home late at night for a family party, and finds a woman in his bed.  After the initial shock, Adam recognizes Genevieve as the woman who Mama Rose invited to become Adam’s wife; but that was almost a year has passed.  Why did Genevieve decide to come now?  Adam makes no bones that he is not interested in getting married …..ever.

We learn that Genevieve is keeping a secret about some trouble she is in.  When she leaves abruptly after the party, Adam and the others in the family are concerned.   Adam does find a telegram warning Genevieve to run, as someone is coming for her.   This will set Adam to find Genevieve and help her from whoever is chasing her.

What follows in this quick paced short story, is an exciting tale of a preacher from Genevieve’s past who is evil, and wants her back.  Adam will do whatever it takes to protect her, even if she insists he leave her alone.  Genevieve finds herself caring for Adam, but does not want his help because she fears for his safety.  It is also a sweet slow build romance that will find Adam falling in love with Genevieve and her believing he could never love her.   They were very good together, and it was a happy ever after.   If you enjoy western themed romances, with a great couple and a shorter storyline, then you should read the Clayborne Brides trilogy.\

Description:
Douglas Clayborne will never turn his back on anyone in need, and everyone in Blue Belle knows it. Time and again, his intolerance of cruelty of any kind has made him a champion of the defenseless … but his quiet strength faces its ultimate battle when he meets Isabel Grant. He arrives at her ranch to pick up the magnificent Arabian stallion he’s purchased, but he cannot leave the vulnerable woman behind when he discovers the danger that threatens her. Convincing the stubborn, strong-willed beauty that she needs him is another matter. Douglas can stop the men from stealing her ranch and her horses, but he cannot stop Isabel Grant from stealing his heart

Review:

One White Rose by Julie Garwood is the 2nd book in her Clayborn Brides series.  This is Douglas Clayborne’s  time to be the hero, and it was a fun read.  When he arrives to pick up the Arabian Stallion that his brother purchased, Douglas finds himself in the midst of a ranch war and a pregnant young lady desperately trying to survive.

Isabel Grant is widowed and alone, close to term on her pregnancy and trying to ward off the town’s wealthy and nasty rancher, who everyone fears.  When Douglas arrives, Isabel threatens him, not knowing that he is not part of the rancher’s men.  In a short time, after he convinces her why he is here, she starts having contractions and it Douglas who will help deliver the baby.

What follows is a sweet romance that will build as Douglas will stay and help Isabel, until she can recover, in about 8-10 weeks.  Knowing the rancher is keeping an eye on Isabel, with plans on forcing her to marry him, Douglas goes out each night to investigate the rancher and his violent ranch hands.  He also visits the doctor, who secretly gives Douglas medicine and food for Isabel.  Together Douglas and Isabel , who are falling for each other, must fool the rancher that the baby has not been born, long enough to escape.  It was nice to see Douglas’s brothers come to help. There is a twist near the end that will explain why the rancher desperately wants to force Isabel to marry him.

Knowing Isabel does not want to leave town, Douglas is determined to help her, and the town rid themselves of the fear and violence they have endured.  Douglas, who has fallen in love with Isabel, is convinced that she only feels obligated to him.  Will he let her go?

This book is a short story, but Garwood does a good job of giving us a sweet romance, and an exciting story.  I enjoyed One White Rose, and look forward to the third book in this series, One Red Rose.

Description:
THE CLAYBORNES ARE BACK! AND LOVE IS IN BLOOM! — First introduced in Julie Garwood’s magnificent New York Times bestseller For the Roses, which inspired the Hallmark Hall of Fame television film Rose Hill, the Clayborne brothers of Blue Belle, Montana, have been embraced by millions worldwide. Now Julie Garwood spins the individual stories of these three spirited brothers — once a mismatched gang of street urchins — in a trio of special novels that begins with One Pink Rose.

Travis Clayborne may be the youngest of the Clayborne brothers, but he’s most definitely his own man. Unless it means saying no to his beloved Mama Rose. And that’s why Travis is escorting young Bostonian Emily Finnegan to Golden Crest, Montana — where she’ll discover what awaits her as a mail-order bride. Emily has made it perfectly clear that she’s taken charge of her destiny and nothing is going to interfere. Falling in love with the perfect stranger isn’t part of her plan, but the journey with Travis across this beautiful, rugged land opens her eyes… and her heart. Perhaps her destiny isn’t exactly as she imagined.

Review:

One Pink Rose by Julie Garwood is a sweet humorous historical romance. Even if you have not read the first book, For the Roses, this read very well as a standalone.  In the next two months, I will be reviewing the next two books in this series.

Travis Clayborne , our hero, is the youngest brother in the Clayborne family, who sets out to find the man who stole something from “Mama Rose”, and to honor his promise to escort a mail order bride to her destination. Emily Finnegan, our heroine, is the mail order bride, who is determined to bypass love and take charge of her own life.

When the two meet, Travis will be taken by surprise, as Emily, not knowing who he was, pulls out a revolver.  The banter between the two of them was fun, as they both could not agree on anything.  She was stubborn and righteous, and he was opinionated about why she would want to marry a man she never met.  As they travel to their destination point, their attraction to each other starts to heat up quickly, though both are determined not to let their feelings change anything.

What follows is a sweet romance, with a western background, a wonderful couple we rooted for, and some nice secondary characters, especially Jack.  When the time comes to meet her betrothed, Emily knows that she has fallen in love with Travis.  Will she stop her promised marriage?  Can Travis win her over?

This was not only a nice romance, but a lot of fun.  As we get closer to the end, there are some exciting parts that threaten both Emily and Travis. One Pink Rose was a nice read, which did have an old fashion feel, and a nice change to a pure romance.  If you love historical romances, something which Julie Garwood always did so well, then I suggest you read One Pink Rose.

Must Love Cowboys by Cheryl Brooks – a Review

Must Love CowboysAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
Shy computer specialist and amateur chef Tina Hayes travels to Circle Bar K ranch to scatter her father’s ashes in the Tetons of Wyoming. Once there, her father’s old army buddy and his cast of cowboy ranch hands persuade her to stay on as the ranch’s cook for a while. It’s not a hard decision, especially when she meets Wyatt McCabe, a man who makes her heart gallop like no one else. But with so many cowboys to choose from, can Wyatt show Tina that he’s the only one for her?

Review:

Must Love Cowboys by Cheryl Brooks is the 2nd book in her Cowboy Heaven series.  I did not read the first book, and this works very well as a standalone, though I think one day I would like to read the first book.

Tina Hayes is our heroine, and after spending a couple of years taking care of her grandfather, she arrives at the Circle Bar K ranch to honor the instructions in his will.  Tina brings her grandfather’s ashes and sentimental possessions to Calvin, the ranch cook and former war buddy.  Planning to return home right away, Tina ends up staying as the cook, after Calvin has a heart attack.  The ranch has quite a few hot cowboy hunks that Tina can’t keep her eyes off.

Wyatt McCabe is our hero, and is one of those hot sexy cowboys, and in a short time he finds himself attracted to the beautiful new cook.  But even if she feels the attraction to Wyatt, Tina is courted quickly by Dean, another hot cowboy, forcing Wyatt not to act on his feelings.  But soon that will change, and in no time the romance between Tina and Wyatt begins to heat up.  Besides the romance, Tina is happy cooking for everyone at the ranch, as she loves to cook, and is also a computer expert.  All the guys, as well as the owners all want to Tina to stay permanently, since they all care about her, not to mention her great food.  Tina also is determined to discover who might be trying to kill Calvin, dragging Wyatt and the other cowboys in helping her read all the old letters from her grandfather and Calvin to find clues.

Must Love Cowboys was a fun read, sexy and also a mystery.  I thought, particularly early on, that some things did not feel realistic.  Tina was very shy around men, and within a few hours she was making out with Dean, and eyeing Wyatt.  She did not come across as shy at all.  Overall, I did enjoy this story, thought the characters were all fun; the romance between Wyatt and Tina was sexy and sweet;  the mystery was well done.  I am sure there will be future stories upcoming with the remaining hot cowboys.

Under the Desert Sky by Sara Luck – a Review

Under the Desert SkyAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
Phoebe Sloan isn’t afraid of hard work—she couldn’t have survived on the Arizona frontier if she were. But ever since her husband was killed in a ranch accident, she’s struggled to make ends meet and preserve her young son’s birthright. Her last gamble was to start raising ostriches—the plumes are prized by fashionable city ladies—and it could work, but someone’s determined to sabotage her efforts.

Enter Christian de Wet, a South African importer who finds himself drawn to the fragile but determined Phoebe. He begins helping her around the ranch as a kindness, but the two quickly find that the heat rising between them has nothing to do with the Arizona desert! When the saboteur finds a way to endanger not just the ranch, but Phoebe’s family, will she have to forsake her happiness to save her son?

Review:

Under the Desert Sky begins with Phoebe being sent away by her father, for her own good.  Even though Phoebe doesn’t want to leave, she understands and takes a huge leap of faith.  As the blurb says, life in Arizona has been hard on Phoebe, but she is bound and determined to make it on her own terms and build a good life for her and her young son.

Christian has basically been sent away from his home the same as Phoebe.  He needs to leave South Africa and it just so happens that the woman who raised him as her own needs some ostriches delivered to Arizona, so she enlists Christian to get the animals to the Arizona territories.  Christian and July, a hired hand who has been with the family for years, set out for Arizona.  It was a very long trip,  and are very thankful when they finally reach their destination.

Once Christian and Phoebe meet, they feel an almost immediate attraction.  Unfortunately, there are those who do not want Phoebe to succeed and those who want Christian gone.  However, Christian and Phoebe prove to be a formidable team and are bound and determined to make things work.

Under the Desert Sky is a nicely written story, and it’s the first I’ve read by Sara Luck.  Her characters are well written and you will fall in love with Phoebe.  She is fierce, protective and loving.  Christian is perfect match for her.  He’s loyal as well as protective of everyone he considers his.  I loved the secondary characters as well and wished that we’d found out a little more about them.

This one is a bit different that what I normally read, and I have to say when I saw “ostrich farm”, I was like????  LOL!!  Anyway, if you’re looking for a quick read with a sweet romance and lovely developed relationship, this one is for you.  For some reason, I keep comparing this to Out of Africa.  That, at least for me, is the kind of vibe I got while reading this story.  Well done, Sarah Luck.

Release Date: November 24, 2015
Genre: adult, contemporary, romance

Once TouchedAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
The youngest of the three Knowles siblings, Quinn has in her blood the love of the land and its beautiful creatures. Raising enough money to build an animal sanctuary is a dream Quinn lives every day—while fending off her family’s well-intentioned matchmaking schemes. Though harboring secret fears about intimacy, Quinn soon realizes she cannot fight her growing attraction to a man who has suddenly entered her life.

Scarred by his months in Afghanistan and the violence he witnessed there through his camera lens, photojournalist Ethan Saunders throws himself into hard ranching work as a prescription for healing. But falling for Quinn has given him the one thing he thought he’d lost forever: hope. Ethan discovers that Quinn, like the innocent animals she rescues, is shy, and afraid of entrusting her heart to a man. Passion soon awakens Ethan’s strength, and his tender seduction may be just what Quinn needs to believe in herself—and in his love.

Review:

Once Touched by Laura Moore is the third in her Silver Creek series. I read and loved the second one, still haven’t gotten round to reading the first book.

Quinn is the youngest of three siblings, and is the only girl, and being brought up on a ranch, Quinn learned to be tough, but for all her toughness she is totally clueless when it comes to men.

She brings rescued animals back to the ranch to heal, and usually keeps them, she has a bad mouthed bird, a dog, a cat, several horses, and a small herd of goats. She dreams of opening her own haven for animals one day.

She is told by the men she dates, how pretty she is, but she won’t let them too close, she is scared, and after a few attempts with a few of those men, she decides that sex is overrated, or there must be something wrong with her.

Then her parents ask Quinn to pick up an old family friend who is coming to recover from a severe injury, from the airport. She remembers Ethan, who was always at the ranch when she was a little girl and he would spend hours helping her to ride her favourite pony. But her childhood memories are soon turned to dust.  The man Quinn knew, wasn’t there, and in his place was a broken man, a man so immersed in his anger and pain that she didn’t recognize him, sparks fly and not in a positive way.

Ethan is a photojournalist, and has just come back from taking photos in Afghanistan. After suffering from a bomb blast, all Ethan wants to do is recover and get on with life, and unsure if he will ever have the confidence to pick up a camera again, Ethan just wants to live day to day.

But little by little Quinn helps heal this scarred and damaged man. And in return he shows Quinn what a real relationship has to offer.  They might just start out as friends with benefits, but it soon quickly turns into more.

But misunderstandings and mistrust drive a huge wedge between Quinn and Ethan, can they restore each other’s faith, and will their love survive?  I love her interaction with her brothers Wade and Reid. Those books are one and two in the trilogy you get a nice glimpse of them too. Once Touched is another wonderful story by Laura Moore.

Interview beige 2

TRC: Hi Laura and welcome back to The Reading Café.

LM: Hi! (Waving across cyberspace). Thanks so much for having me here today at the Reading Café. Love hanging out with you all.

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. For those who do not know about you, would you please tell us something about your self?

Laura Moore 6LM: I currently live in the great tiny state of Rhode Island. I’ve been a romance writer for a while now–Once Touched is my tenth title–but I’ve also worked as a teacher and museum educator. I’m married to a wonderful man and we have two great kids. I love animals and I used to ride competitively. I pretty much always manage to feature a four-legged creature in my stories. In Once Touched, I hit the critter jackpot. My heroine Quinn Knowles not only lives on a cattle and sheep ranch, she raises dairy goats and rescues animals.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

LM: I read my first romance when I was twelve and was hooked. I’d say the early authors I read–Nora Roberts; Catherine Coulter; Judith McNaught, and Jude Deveraux–inspired me. When I sat down to write my first novel, Ride A Dark Horse, my goal was to write as memorably as they. As time has gone by, the list of authors who inspire me has only grown. There are such wonderful and uplifting stories being told by today’s romance authors.

Once TouchedTRC: ONCE TOUCHED is the third installment in your Silver Creek cowboy romance series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

LM: My Silver Creek series takes place in northern California, on a sprawling guest ranch owned by the Knowles family. Just so you know, all three books can be read as stand-alones. Once Touched is Quinn Knowles’s story. Quinn seems to have it all: She has a great job caring for the livestock at Silver Creek Ranch and rescuing animals she finds in need. She has wonderful friends and a supportive family. But no one’s life is perfect, not even Quinn’s. She’s guarding a secret fear, a deep-seated anxiety. She needs someone she can trust to help her overcome her problem. And that someone can’t be from her circle of friends or family.

Photojournalist Ethan Saunders comes to Silver Creek Ranch a wounded man. Haunted by his experience in Afghanistan, Ethan doesn’t want to deal with people. Most of all, he doesn’t want to feel. But Quinn Knowles sneaks past his defenses and, in spite of his determination to shut out the world, he finds himself caring for her.

For her part, Quinn can’t resist trying to heal both the visible and invisible wounds Ethan carries. As the two fall for each other, they have to find the strength to overcome the fears that bind them or risk losing the love they’ve found.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (logistics, facts) have you encountered writing and publishing this story and series?

LM: What a great question! One of the challenges I had to face was incredibly prosaic: the weather. I’ve been writing this series as California faces an epic drought–kind of a bummer when you’re writing a romance, but an essential topic when your protagonists are tied to the land as my ranching family is. I had to find ways to talk about the impact the drought is having on the environment and people’s lives without letting it overwhelm the story.

In Once Touched I also address our military involvement in Afghanistan. My hero, Ethan Saunders is a photojournalist who was embedded with an army unit near Kandahar. I wanted to be sure I got the pertinent details right and treated the subject of our armed forces fighting overseas with the respect and sensitivity it deserves.

TRC: Are any of the characters or stories based in reality or a combination of reality and fiction?

LM: Kind of, sort of. Sometimes when I’m in between novels, I’ll read an article about a person and that will serve as a springboard for the hero or heroine in my next book. That happened when I read a profile of Sylvia Earle, a totally cool marine biologist. She was the starting point for my heroine Lily Banyon in Night Swimming.

With Once Touched, my characters evolved from a bunch of different things I’ve become interested in recently: rescuing and training animals as service animals; ways to help our returning soldiers, and sustainable farming and ranching.

TRC: How do you keep the plot(s) unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

LM: Honestly, that’s always a challenge for me. I write small town contemporary romances and my patron saint is Jane Austen (along with St. Francis). My hope is that even without the pyrotechnics of romantic suspense or paranormals, I’m writing stories that grab both the heart and mind.

TRC: There is a fine line between romance, erotic, and erotica in many of today’s popular contemporary fiction. What do you believe accounts for the differences between the sub-genres in today’s romantic stories?

LM: We’re living in a post Fifty Shades of Grey era. I’ve always written sexy romances but since E.L. James came onto the scene, I’ve noticed that the heat level in a lot of contemporaries has gone from simmering to sizzling. I’m not sure whether my sex scenes have as well (I’m too busy reading other authors to read my own books). But just as there was a pendulum swing towards the scorching end in contemporaries, I think–hope–that we’ve returned to an equilibrium. Readers of contemporary romances are looking for all types of stories, some hot, verging on erotic, some not.

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

silver creek series

LM: Yes–and thank you, Ballantine Books, for the beautiful covers you gave to Once Touched and all my titles in the Silver Creek series! There are so many books competing for readers’ attention. A strong and visually arresting cover is the first step in getting a reader to pick a book off the shelf or, increasingly, to click on the thumbnail image. And as we all know, it’s that tiny thumbnail image that is becoming ever more important so it’s vital to have a designer who understands how to make a cover work. The rest is up to me and my words.

TRC: When writing a story line, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

LM: My characters are always there, reading over my shoulder and then tapping it and saying, “Nope, I don’t think so…”

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

LM: I think both questions can be answered by judging the strength and believability of the characters in the story. They have to be well drawn, with strengths and weaknesses, motivations and insecurities with which the reader can identify and relate. My ambition as a writer is to get better at telling stories with every book but that doesn’t mean it gets any easier. Sometimes we writers get lucky and a character comes along who has everything: the flaws, the scars, the charisma and the strength, sometimes we have to work really hard to find those attributes in our other characters.

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

LM: I’m a music addict. I’m listening to Brandi Carlisle’s ‘Dreams’ as I type. A lot of my writer friends can’t write to music or have to listen to purely instrumental compositions. Me, I like a good beat, a soaring voice, and great lyrics. I think it’s a holdover from my days as a barn rat…I need music in my background. I don’t know whether my musical preferences affect the storyline per se (though I did sneak in a Marvin Gaye reference in Once Touched because it was just so perfect) but my characters often listen to the same music I like. My one exception was Gen Monaghan in In Your Eyes. She mixed classical music and operas into her playlist far more than me. In our house, it’s my husband who’s the opera fiend.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

LM:
1. Write my new Beach Lane series
2. Travel to some cities and countries I’ve never visited. I have quite a bucket list. For instance I’ve never been to Australia or New Zealand. I’d also like to visit China and Japan.
3. Sort through the closets and remove all the clutter my husband, children, and I have accumulated over the years. That might take a decade.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

LM: That we’re good at talking about our books and our writing process!

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

LM: I may love rock and roll but I have the lousiest singing voice in the world. Sometimes when I’m writing and a favorite song of mine comes on I’ll get up and dance and sing. Our cat will run away, leaving just the dog who will look very worried but determined to save me.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

LM: I’ve just started a new trilogy–The Beach Lane Series–which is set in the Hamptons, the wealthy hamlets on Long Island, New York’s east end. The first book is entitled Making Waves and it’s about a woman named Dakota Hayes who runs a personal concierge service. I’ve never written a character like Dakota before, and I’m having a blast. And my hero, venture capitalist Max Carr, is one of those tortured alpha males you just have to love… Making Waves will be out in 2016.

TRC: What do you have planned for 2016?

LM: Celebrate the release of Making Waves with you all, I hope! And get cracking on book two in the series, Summer Fling. This writing business is a lot like the shampoo instructions: Wash, rinse, repeat.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

LM: First, thank you so much for having me here today and letting me talk about Quinn and Ethan and Once Touched.

I’d also like to give away a copy of Once Tempted Book One in the Silver Creek series to a reader who comments below. I’ll leave you with a question to get the ball rolling.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 28, 2014

Welcome to Valentine Valley, where the cowboys have many talents and love is waiting around every corner . . .

Ever since a heated late-night kiss—that absolutely should not have happened—cowboy Josh Thalberg makes former Hollywood bad girl Whitney Winslow’s pulse beat faster. But when she decides to use his gorgeous leatherwork in her new upscale lingerie shop, Leather & Lace, she’s determined to keep their relationship strictly professional . . . even if she wants so much more.

Josh has never met a challenge he isn’t up for. Which is probably why he allowed Whitney to persuade him to take the sexy publicity photo that went viral—and now has every woman in America knocking down his door . . . every woman except the one he can’t get out of his head.

But how to convince a reformed bad girl that some rules are worth breaking?

REVIEW: THE COWBOY OF VALENTINE VALLEY is the third full length storyline (fifth story) in Emma Cane’s Valentine Valley adult, western romance series. This is cowboy/leather designer Josh Thalberg and lingerie business owner Whitney Winslow’s story. Whitney has returned to Valentine Valley eight months after approaching the town people about her desire to open up her third ‘Leather and Lace’ lingerie boutique and eight months following the kiss that has turned her dreams upside down. Although this is the third full length story it can be read as a standalone without too much difficulty. Many of the previous storyline characters play an integral role in THE COWBOY OF VALENTINE VALLEY. The story is told from third person POV.

The focus of THE COWBOY OF VALENTINE VALLEY is Josh and Whitney’s building relationship and the drama surrounding small town mentality with the hopes of keeping the riff-raff at bay. When Whitney approached Josh about a designer line of leather collars for her shop, she had no idea the media fall-out that would occur when a few pictures of Josh showing his leather goods went viral on the social media networks. Add some enterprising ‘grandmas’ and the tabloid paparazzi and, Josh and Whitney will find themselves front and center in a small town scandal. Hoping to track down the people responsible, Whitney is surprised when the source of the problem is someone very close.

The relationship between Whitney and Josh is a second chance at love between two people who are perfect for one another but from different lifestyles and financial backgrounds. The romance is sensual and slow to build as our couple take the time to discover one another.

Emma Cane pulls the reader into a romantic tale set in a picturesque world where friends meet and fall deeply in love. It is a story (and series) where romance fuels the senses and love deepens the plot. The characters are colorful and approachable-they are people with hopes and dreams; heartbreak and sorrow; loves and dislikes. The world building continues as the Valentine Valley regulars draw in the reader for a peek at the past and the future storylines that have yet to be told.

REVIEW: A PROMISE AT BLUEBELL HILL is the fourth full-length instalment in Emma Cane’s Valentine Valley series focusing on a tight knit group of friends and family in and around Valentine Valley, Colorado. This is florist Monica Shaw and Secret Service agent Travis Beaumont’s story. Although this is the fourth instalment, it can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty although I would suggest for your complete enjoyment, reading the series from the beginning as many of the references are interconnected from previous storylines. A Promise At Blue Bell Hill fast forwards the series approximately six to seven months.

The focus of the storyline is on the impending nuptials of the US President’s son with one of Valentine Valley’s own. Travis is the lead agent preparing for the president’s visit and must be on guard for any and all potential threats to the first family. Travis finds himself irrevocably drawn to Monica once he has entered her shop and their mutual attraction fuels the gossip in the small town of Valentine Valley. As the storyline builds, so too, do the secrets between our couple-Monica’s past and Travis’s true intent.

As the town of Valentine Valley prepares for the upcoming visit of the president and the wedding of the year, the reader is re-introduced to many of the previous storyline characters. We get another glimpse at the Valentine Valley’s feisty Widow’s Boarding house ladies; the gang at Tony’s Tavern; and all of the couples who fell in love in Valentine Valley.

Emma Cane writes a wonderful storyline about two people who met under auspicious circumstances-they were obviously destined to meet-but life and everything it has to offer will ensure that what they have is only a temporary thing. As the date nears for the president’s arrival, the ladies of the Widow’s Boarding house have other plans for welcoming the president and her family. Plans will be made, lines will be drawn and family will be pitted against one another.

The relationship between Monica and Travis is slow to build as they play around one another throughout most of the storyline. In this, I did not feel the connection between our leading couple. There was something missing in the ‘love’ department-perhaps it was Travis’s cold, brooding, dark Secret Service exterior –or Monica’s ‘laissez faire’ attitude about the entire relationship. The relationship took second place to the secondary storyline regarding the upcoming presidential visit and the plans the elder members of Valentine Valley had put into motion.

A PROMISE AT BLUEBELL HILL is a story that pulls together all of Valentine Valley’s lovers and friends. It is a story about a building romance between two people from different walks of life; a story about family, discovering the truth and, knowing when to let go. The world building continues throughout each instalment with the re-introduction of old friends, new lovers and future stories. Emma Cane weaves a story about a small town in Valentine Valley, Colorado and all of the romance it has to offer.
