REVIEW: WHEN WE BURN is the first instalment in Kristen Proby’s contemporary, adult THE BLACKWELLS OF MONTANA erotic, romance series, a spin off, set in the author’s The Wilds of Montana series. This is fire chief Bridger Blackwell, and kindergarten teacher Dani Lexington’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Bridger and Dani) WHEN WE BURN follows the childhood friends to lovers relationship between fire chief Bridger Blackwell, and kindergarten teacher Dani Lexington. Dani Lexington grew up in an abusive household, and with the help of her siblings, and the Blackwell family, the Lexington’s thrived to become successful individuals but Dani’s heart has always longed for love and acceptance, and in this, Bridger is the man with whom Dani will fall in love. Bridger is Bitterroot Valley’s fire chief, a single father, and a man determined to claim Dani as his own but there is an arsonist on the loose, and Bridger finds himself torn between duty and protecting the people he loves. As Bridger and Dani’s relationship turns into something more, the past refuses to let go, demanding everything and more.
The world building follows several paths including the building relationship between Bridger and Dani; Dani’s growing love for Bridger’s five year old daughter; and the realization that an arsonist is setting fire to the small village of Bitterroot Valley,
The relationship between Dani and Bridger is a friends to lovers. Bridger has always been Dani’s guardian and protector, alongside Dani’s older brother Holden (SHE’S A WILD ONE) but Bridger is determined to prove Dani is worthy of love, and in this, biding his time in the seduction of our story line heroine. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, energetic and familiar secondary and supporting characters including many of the couples from the author’s THE WILDS OF MONTANA series. We are introduced to Dani’s twin sister Alex, and baby sister Charlie; Bridger’s parents Brandon and Becca Blackwell, sister Billie, brothers Black and Beckett, and Bridger’s daughter Birdie.
WHEN WE BURN is a story of family and friendships, healing and love. The premise is dramatic, emotional and heart breaking; the characters are determined and charismatic; the romance is seductive and fated.
