Description:
Meet Magnolia.

Her father’s dead, her boyfriend’s ditched her to commit himself more fully to surfing, and her mother’s depressed because she can’t get cast on The Real Housewives of Orange County. All Magnolia wants is to reinvent herself.

Meet Ford.

Half his family is in jail, the other half probably should be, he shoplifted his way into a job at a record store, and his brother pawned his 1953 Telecaster for a quick buck. All Ford wants is to reinvent himself.

Ford, meet Magnolia.

When the two teens are cast in Spotlight, a reality TV singing competition, both see it as their chance to start anew. With each episode, as they live together in a Hollywood Hills mansion and sing their hearts out, Ford and Magnolia fall in love. But how genuine can that love be when a television audience is watching their every move—and when their pasts are catching up them so much faster than they can run?

Review:

Magnolia and Ford are two teenagers who yearn to reinvent themselves. Though not conventional, their transformation (and relationship) is on the set of Spotlight, a reality TV singing competition in Hollywood. A precipice for amazing achievements, professional and personal, or will they get caught up in trivial pursuits leading them nowhere fast? Everybody Knows Your Name by Andrea Seigel and Brent Bradshaw was a charming, cautionary tale about discovery, hope and falling in love.

Magnolia is sick of herself. She’s not particularly sad or angry; she’s just tired of the rut she’s become.

“…but I think this show could take my head between its hands and shake it up. I want to be a little dizzy. I want to give up my old securities.”

Ford is an emancipated 17 year old who still can’t find enough independence. When he’s able to pursue his love of music on the grand scale/stage, he strikes out with a vengeance. The alternative would lead him backward to Arkansas.

But when this pair of idealists with intent to supersede expectations is constantly being monitored, told to “just be yourselves for a second”, because no one’s filming…does being true to yourself, realizing you were good from the beginning, overcome the hype? Ford and Magnolia care enough to see through the fantasy. And find the heart.

What a book! Told from a solidly PG voice through alternating POVs, I was hooked from the beginning; rushing through laundry and ironing uniforms to dive right back into the drama. Who wouldn’t be glued when you’re tapped into an authentic coming of age story that leaves remarkable impressions?! Varied background characters evoke face-palming and offer terrific insight. As an adult, there were “train wreck” moments that made me cringe since I’m quite familiar with bad judgment calls. It’s this experience, however, that had me applauding the poignancy and value these authors associated with erroneous decisions. Ford and Magnolia stumble along the way, spectacularly at times, but the lessons are learned and its effects life affirming.

I don’t know if Ms. Seigel and Mr. Bradshaw intend to develop these characters any further (it didn’t end in a cliffhanger per se, so you’re expected to infer), but Ford and Magnolia’s spark caught fire. It was a pleasure to meet such mature, wonderful people…before they even knew they already were. Bravo!

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.

After their secret romance is exposed, Sydney and Adrian find themselves facing the wrath of both the Alchemists and the Moroi in this electrifying conclusion to Richelle Mead’s New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series. When the life of someone they both love is put on the line, Sydney risks everything to hunt down a deadly former nemesis. Meanwhile, Adrian becomes enmeshed in a puzzle that could hold the key to a shocking secret about spirit magic, a secret that could shake the entire Moroi world.

•••••••••••••••••

Review:
I feel like I have just gotten off the rollercoaster that is THE RUBY CIRCLE by Richelle Mead and I am still feeling exhilarated, a tad lightheaded and wondering, did I get off before it came to a complete stop? This novel is the conclusion of The Bloodline Series that brought “Sydrian” together. That is Adrian, our lighthearted Moroi vampire and Sydney, our serious Alchemist. These are two races that were never meant to be together, but there is no stopping true love!

Sometimes staying together is tougher than getting together! Sydney and Adrian find themselves living with his mother in a guest suite at the Moroi Court. It isn’t very romantic and real life is difficult, but soon the adventures begin. Sydney breaks out of Court with the help of Ms. Terwilliger, our favorite teacher slash witch! There was a clue left for Sydney that may help them find the kidnapped Jill. There is a lot of action in this novel and our couple is pulled in so many different directions. They are following the clues to Jill’s location, discovering who is behind the kidnapping and solving the mystery of what happened to Olive! This is Nina’s sister who fell in love with Neil and disappeared. We need a chart of all characters, because they all make an appearance in this novel! At times the action seemed manic, there were so many detours. All former characters, including “dead ones”, make cameo appearances and that added to the many side plots!

Adrian must come to terms with his Spirit use and how it is affecting his mental health. Nina used too much Spirit and she suffered the consequences! Sydney is surrounded by her adopted Coven and the magical aspects were a fascinating part of the storyline. I think I needed more witch time, but all of the characters were pushing for story time. During one part, a baby joins their group and the secrets about his parentage must be kept a secret from everyone! His genetics might literally be the salvation for the Moroi race.

The novel has two conclusions. The race to find our kidnapped Princess is exciting with Sydney battling a Demon! Sydney has a chance to make amends with The Alchemists through the use of blackmail, that’s the genius Sydney I know! Sydrian wants a chance to live a happy life without constantly looking over their shoulder. The epilogue is another story. I found it a tad disappointing! The story building was stellar and then, it fell flat. Loose ends were not resolved, leading me to believe that Ms. Mead wants to revisit this world with another spin off. It’s not a bad HEA, but it was too safe. That led to the feeling of, that’s it?!? I think readers will still love this novel, just hang on and enjoy the ride!

Once again, everything Ari’s come to believe is thrown into question. In a world of uncertainty, loyalties are tested, lies are uncovered, and no one can be trusted. If Ari and Jackson have any hope at survival and at preserving a life for the future, they must fight the final war with their eyes wide open.

Review:

Collide by Melissa West is the 3rd and final book in her The Taking trilogy. I have been with this series from the start, and have loved every moment of it. Ari and Jackson are our heroes all throughout the series, and they were great together. This was an exciting book from start to finish, and as I neared the end, I started worrying that the ending will leave me dissatisfied.   I am happy to say I didn’t need to worry, as it was an awesome end to this fabulous trilogy.

When we last left off in Hover, Ari, and the humans/ancients who were trying to escape the planet Loge and Zeus to go to Earth. There was a cliffhanger when they arrived. In Collide we start with Ari waking up from a drug induced sleep, to see her mother, father and her friends, Gretchen and Vill. In a short time she learns that not all is well on Earth, as Kelvin is now the President and he wants Ari to reveal the secrets of Zeus and the plan to destroy earth. Only Ari doesn’t know, since Zeus an evil madman who reveals nothing, but Kelvin doesn’t believe her, and much to her shock, he has Jackson as his prisoner and is willing to torture him to get what he wants.

After much anguish, Ari is able to convince Kelvin, whom she does not trust, to allow them to visit the surrounding territories and teach them how to fight, in preparation for the upcoming war against Zeus. This allows Jackson to be freed, and Vill, Gretchen, her father travel with her to help other humans train for the upcoming war. What follows is an exciting story, with many twists, and betrayals that make their attempt to win this war almost impossible. Zeus is too strong, but neither Ari nor Jackson will give up.

Things are not what they expected when they arrive at the different compounds, with human distrust of Ari, Jackson and Vill (ancients or half ancients). They were able to turn some of the Ops to half ancients to give them more power and strength to fight, but at each stop the losses increase and by the time they reach the last stop, they know that they have been set up. By the time they get back to the main compound, the war has already begun.

Ari must be able to rise her powers or everyone will die. She and Jackson will have to find a way to meet Zeus face to face to try to kill him, or all will be lost. The last half of the book was non- stop action, with heartbreaking moments. Will Ari and Jackson’s love for one another be enough for them to defeat Zeus? Will either of them survive?

Melissa West has done a wonderful job completing this story, and allowing us to follow Ari and Jackson all the way through. They made a great couple, strong and determined, but most of all, a beautiful love between them. Thank you Melissa for giving us a fascinating ending to this trilogy. For those of you have not read The Taking series, you should start with Gravity and enjoy the ride.

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard – a Review

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard – a Review

Red QueenAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers.

To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change.

Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the centre of those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control.

But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win?

Review:

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is her debut novel and the 1st book in her Red Queen trilogy. When I read the description of this book, I had decided to give it a shot. WOW All I can say is I am so glad I did, as I became totally immersed into this fabulous and mesmerizing story by Aveyard. Red Queen is a fantasy style dystopian, and if this is Victoria Aveyard’s debut novel, I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us. Once I started this book, I could not put it down, as it grabs you from the get go, and the world building is fantastic.

Our heroine is Mare Barrow, and she is a Red (red blood) who are considered the lower class citizens in this cruel world. The Reds live in poverty, they are the workers, the servants, and the ones who are sent to war. They have no special ability, therefore they are expendable. Mare has no skills, she is a thief, who goes into town daily and sneakily steals things to provide money and food for the family she loves. Since she has no job, she is scheduled when she reaches her next birthday to be sent off to war, where few survive. When her friend, Kilorn loses his job, he is expected to be sent quickly to the war zone, and Mare is determined to protect him. While she travels to Silver territory to steal more things to save her friend, she meets someone who will change her life forever.

The Silvers (silver blood) are the wealthy, the leaders, the skilled warriors, living in luxury, with various super amazing powers that rule many of the houses. But there is one Royal family, a King, Queen and two princes that rule.

Mare much to her surprise, the day after her trip to Silver territory, is visited by Silver warriors and pulled away from home to work as a servant for the Royals. Of course, Reds have no choice, they must do what they are told to do, but at least she doesn’t have to go to fight in the army. An accident changes things for Mare, as she is thrown into the world of the Silvers, including the Royal family. Out of nowhere, she is now a princess and betrothed to the 2nd prince. The Royal family, conceives a plan to make Mare a long lost princess, and to keep her close. Why? You will need to read this book to find out. Mare has no choice, either be this princess or die.

We meet the two princes that will become a big part of Mare’s life. Cal, is the future King, and he is the one who helped her get the job. Maven, is the 2nd son, and he is the one betrothed to Mare, now known as Mareena. Mare likes both of the princes, which partially looks like a triangle, but in time you will see it is not so.

At this time there is a new Red revolution led by the Scarlet Guard. Despite her now being in the upper class, Mare hates the Royals and all the Silvers, but she has to act the part or die. Queen Elara, who is Maven’s mother, is very powerful, able to read memories of anyone, as well as do mind control to force them to do what she wants. In the midst of all of this, Mare secretly joins forces with the Scarlet Guard to help them. Their motto “We will rise, red as the dawn”. Surrounded by the enemy, and forced to continue this lie, Mare tries to learn all she can, especially being thrown into this political intrigue. What follows is an extremely exciting, non-stop action, and intense battles, not to mention facing all these powers that the Silvers have.

Mare is warned over and over, to trust no one….Anyone can betray anyone. Mare was a terrific heroine, having to face insurmountable odds every step of the way. Cal was hot, and I really liked him. Maven was surprisingly very sweet and good with Mare. But the big question, will Mare’s secret be revealed? Will she survive? Who will betray her?

The last quarter of the book is mind boggling, with a major twist, one which I kind of expected, though not to the degree that it was. There were so many life and death situations, with a range of emotions throughout. I do not want to give spoilers, and anything more would be spoilers. This was extremely exciting, as I could not put the book down, holding my breath with every page. In fact, the following morning, I had to go back and reread the last quarter again. Aveyard has created some amazing and wonderful characters, both good and evil. Red Queen is an intense, exciting and fantastic read. I cannot wait for the next book in this trilogy. Victoria Aveyard has done a fabulous job writing her first novel, and in my opinion, she has a wonderful career in front of her.

As the reality of the ritual unfolds, this unlikely group of five embarks on a week of beautiful, terrifying experiences that all culminate in one perfect truth: In the end, your soul is stronger than your burdens.

Review:

The Way We Bared Our Souls by Willa Strayhorn is a YA novel with a very unique concept. When I read the description, I thought to myself, this is different, and it really interested me. What would you think about 5 troubled teenagers, with various issues physically, mentally, or on drugs that find themselves in the midst of a healing ritual that will have them unknowingly switch their burdens with someone else within the 5.

In the beginning of The Way We Bared Our Souls, we meet our heroine of this story. Lo is undergoing an examination as to symptoms she has been having that might be the sign multiple sclerosis, which her beloved aunt recently died from. She tries to hide her fears by pretending nothing is wrong to friends and family. While walking home from school, she comes across a stranger and his coyote. We meet Jay, who is a shaman. Jay tells her things about herself that no one really knows, and she begins to believe him when he talks about a healing ritual. Agreeing to give it a try, she must find 4 friends, who suffer from different types of conditions, and meet with Jay on the weekend.

We get to meet and learn more about the 4 friends that she will find to help complete the ritual.
Kaya – who suffers from inability to feel physical pain, due to a rare condition called CIP that makes her feel numb.

Kit – who is deeply lost in grief for his dead girlfriend.

Ellen – who has become totally hooked on drugs, causing her memory loss.

Thomas – a young child soldier, who can’t get past the nightmares of horrors he witnessed.

When all five meet in a cave in Santa Fe, Jay explains the ritual that will help them cleanse their souls. They will meet back in a week, and after Jay leaves, the 5 sit there not sensing anything different. But later that night or the following morning, they find that they have swapped their burdens.

Lo takes on the numbness of Kaya; Kaya takes on Thomas emotional nightmares, but her own history; Ellen picks up Lo’s pain; Kit enjoys the new feeling of be happy, but without the drugs Ellen was taking; and Thomas takes on Kit’s fears of death.

All this is early on, and what follows is an interesting story that leads each of them to look at things in a different perspective, different pain; which also brings about revelations, coming to terms with their own lives and bringing them all closer, as well as tragedy. Will they find their way back to their own burdens? Will they be able to recover? You will have to read the book to find the answers.

This was an interesting storyline, completely different than I have read before. There were times that I found myself rushing it along with some slow parts early on. However, I did enjoy the story, the friendships, and wanted to find out how it all ended. I do recommend that you read The Way We Bared Our Souls.

They dig more deeply into the case together, and Puller finds that not only are her allegiances unclear, but that there are troubling details about his brother’s conviction….and that someone is out there who doesn’t want the truth to ever come to light. As the nationwide manhunt for Robert grows more urgent, Puller’s masterful skills as an investigator and strength as a fighter may not be enough to save his brother—or himself.

Review:
The Escape by David Baldacci is the 3rd book in his John Puller series. I am a huge fan of Baldacci, as with every book he writes, he leaves me amazed how he could write such a mesmerizing story every time. I have not read the John Puller series until this book, and after reading this, I will go back to read the first two. Having said that, it was easy to read this as a standalone. Baldacci gives us enough information to allow use to know the characters, and John Puller.

The Escape starts inside a military prison that has maximum security beyond normal, and impossible to escape. But after a major storm knocks out the power, including a second generator, shots are fired, and an explosion. When everything is restored, a prisoner is missing. Robert Puller, a former high ranking intelligence officer, has been in prison for two years, having been convicted for treason, and now he has escaped, leaving all high ranking Military officials in a state of panic.

John Puller, who is one of the army’s best military investigators is called in to help find his brother, as well as how the security breach at the prison was done. John is a by the book no nonsense investigator, who loyalty has always been to his country. Though it is his brother, he is determined to find him. Before he can get too far, he is forced work with intelligence officer Veronica Knox, who was sent to work with John. As they both begin putting the pieces together of the escape, as well as deciphering who was the dead body that was found in Robert Puller’s cell, it becomes apparent there is more to this story, then just an escape. Though Knox and Puller find it hard to trust each other, they slowly come to the realization that there is a conspiracy that is very high up. Was Robert Puller really guilty of treason?

The story does go back and forth early between John and Veronica investigating, and Robert, who has changed his appearance, doing his own investigation to clear his name. What follows is an extremely intense, suspenseful and exciting adventure in the hunt to find Robert Puller, as well as all the twists, surprises and turns that leave you blindsided. Baldacci pulls you into this fantastic story from the start, and never let’s go even through the end. This was such an enthralling story, with a wild climatic ending, that amazed me how all the pieces so neatly and almost impossibly fell into place.

As I have said earlier, I love the writing of David Baldacci. I have read his Camel Club (my favorite), Will Robie, and King & Maxwell series. Now I will be adding on the John Puller series. If you like suspense thrillers, political intrigues, military or CIA agents as our lead characters, no one writes these better then Baldacci. He weaves such a great story, with so many twists, detailed information, betrayals, it simply amazes me how he can do all of this, and so flawlessly. Needless to say, I loved The Escape. If you have not read David Baldacci, you are missing gems.

The Finisher

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:

Welcome to Wormwood: a place where curiosity is discouraged and no one has ever left.

Until one girl, Vega Jane, discovers a map that suggests a mysterious world beyond the walls. A world with possibilities and creatures beyond her imagining.

But she will be forced to fight for her freedom. And unravelling the truth may cost Vega her life.

Review:
The Finisher by David Baldacci is the first book in his new YA fantasy series. When I started reading The Finisher, we learn about a place called Wormwood, and a young 14 year old girl name Vega Jane, who would be our heroine.

Vega and her brother, John, live in the slums. They barely have enough to eat each day. Vega works at The Stacks, putting finishing touches to items for those who have money. Her title is the Finisher, and her only friend there is Quentin Herms, who taught her everything. The story begins when Quentin disappears into the Quag, a forbidden forest that surrounds Wormwood, and has dangerous creatures that will kill them as soon as they step into the Quag. No one must ever leave Wormwood, which in itself is depressing.

The Wormwood council knows that Vega was close to Quentin, and they put pressure on her to find out what she knows. What they do not know is that she caught a glimpse of him, as he stepped into the Quag. But Vega knows she cannot reveal that as many of those men who work for the council do not like her, something she feels has to do with her family, who are no longer with her. Early on there was a lot of ground work for the world building, and a ¼ of the way in, I wasn’t sure if this was for me. But I am glad I stayed with it, as it became a great story.

As Vega tries to find the truth about Quentin, and what the Quag really is, she faces an uphill battle against thet attitude of the men in Wormwood; the Council and a powerful adversary, who has powers beyond what anyone can imagine. All Vega really has is Delpha, her friend, especially after her brother moves to become part of the upper class. As she investigates the past and history of Wormwood, she begins to discover magical things that will help her in what she will face in the future. In some scary moments, she sees creatures, as well as being pulled into the past. Vega will find herself in a competition that is meant for men only, and she needs to survive or they will put her away or worst yet, kill her.

Vega will use everything she has, as well as some magical tools that were cool…a chain that helps her fly, a stone that heals, and a magical sword. Those were fun, as this is fantasy. This was really a different type of world, with strange customs, and language, which Baldacci used throughout. But most of all, the last half of the book was extremely nerve wrecking and exciting. Vega fought against prejudice, and all odds, but when all was said and done, she had everyone including us rooting for her. The ending has sort of a partial resolution, but it is a cliffhanger that cries for another book.

Interview-RED
We were very excited and honored to be asked to participate in a telephone interview with David Baldacci.  David is promoting his wonderful new release, The Escape, as well as talk about his previously released, The Finisher, a YA Fantasy.  We have selected some of these great questions from the conference call that we thought you would enjoy.

In your books, the female characters are as tough as the men and then some. I’m thinking of Michelle Maxwell. I’m thinking of course of Vega Jane in your young adult novel. Why so many strong women in your pages? Why is this something that interests you?

David: I don’t write about damsels in distress because I don’t happen to know any. I have a lot of guy friends that need a lot of help and not so much the women.

I grew up with a force of nature in my mother. And I’m married to a force of nature with my wife, whose name is Michelle. So, if you’re wondering who the role model for Michelle Maxwell was, you have the answer. So, that’s why.

What I found amazing in your stories is the detail that flows seamlessly. My question is not the research part, but how you set your story. Are you a plotter with some sort of outline, or a pantser writing with the flow?

David: I don’t do really major outlines for my novels. I’ve always thought, rightly or wrongly, that if I wrote from an outline it would really read to everyone like I wrote from an outline where everything’s sort of neatly tied together and just flows in just the right way. And life is not really like that.

So, a lot of what I do is sort of the seat of my pants. I do get into the story, and I have the character flow in my head and I have plot ideas in my head. But, I just sit down in front of my computer or sometimes in front of a legal pad and just let it fly and see what works.

And some days I think I’m going to go in one direction but I happen to go in another because it just feels right. I think my instincts over the years have served me well. So, I really just like to innovate and be creative right there while I’m sitting down in front of the screen and just let the words pop out of me.

I know it feels like it’s almost happening spontaneously, but I’ve always thought the subconscious is just another way of saying things you’ve been thinking about a long time at a certain level, and they bubble to the surface. And we think we just thought of them, but actually we’ve been ruminating on them for a long time.

And that’s the way I like to write. I’ll do little mini outlines here and there for a particular chapter to make sure that I get all the points in there that I want to have. But, for the broader strokes, you know, all of it’s in my head and I just like to sit down and play around with it and see where it takes me.

What was your inspiration for The Camel Club?  Do you think you’ll go back to this series.

David:  People love The Camel Club.

I just wanted to do something really different where I had an ensemble cast of some guys who had had some mileage on them. They weren’t particularly young or fit anymore. And in many ways, people looked at them as being past their prime.

But, I thought that they had a lot of fuel left in the tank and that, together as a group, they were greater than they were apart. And again, it was just another sort of matter of me stretching my creative wings and going in a different direction and trying to build something I’d never built before.

And a lot of the characteristics they’ve had, people over the years–you know, I’ve observed some of these idiosyncrasies and physical mannerisms and things in people and grafted them onto some of the characters in The Camel Club. I’ve never taken anybody from real life and plopped them whole cloth into a book, but certainly bits and pieces of observations I’ve made over the years.

And I just wanted to build this really quirky kind of group that were sort of conspiracy theorists but had some specialized background and knowledge that actually made them effective doing what they did. And I didn’t want them to be, you know, in official power and I didn’t want them to be associated with any organization. I just wanted them to be people out there who had some unique skills and had some mileage on them, and put them into adventures and situations where they could show they still had a lot of worth and value left.

And it turned out to be really fun. When I wrote the first one, The Camel Club, I wasn’t thinking they were going to be a series. I tell you, when I wrote the last book I was thinking these guys are going to come back.  The Camel Club will ride again!

I wanted to talk about your choice to write fantasy and The Finisher, because it’s not just sort of a realistic story in a fantasy setting, you know, like a bunch of wizards at Hogwarts who are really just like regular kids. I mean, it has the full fantasy world, the history, the vocabulary.   I just wondered if you had the idea to write fantasy first and kind of built the world around it, or did you have this idea of the fantasy world that drove the plot and the genre that you decided to tackle?

David: The Finisher was really a passion project for me. My wife gave me a blank page book on Christmas day in 2008. And I would warn anybody who has a writer in their family, never give them blank pieces of paper on a major holiday because you will never see them for the rest of the day.

I just scooted off to my little cubby and started. I wrote the name down, Vega Jane, and I knew she was going to be the lead character, but I didn’t know what she was going to be doing. And it took me over four years to finally figure out the world that I wanted to place her in, what her role would be in that, and what the total story, plot, and narrative would be and what the other characters around her would be like.

So, I knew that I wanted to create an entirely new world. I didn’t want to place, you know, just an individual in the world as we know it now. So, when you build a world like that, it takes a lot of time and effort and thinking. And I had to put a lot of research into that, because in The Finisher a lot of the terms and references come from mythology, classical works of fantasy, religion.

I wanted to build this world in a smart way. I didn’t want to start naming stuff for the habit of naming something. I–you know, for instance, the jabbit, the giant serpent in the story, is actually based on Persian mythology. In their mythology, it’s called a dabbet, but I thought a jabbit was a much better term. And it just seemed like something that actually a snake would do, so I had a lot of fun with those.

And in putting the whole world together, I tried to do it as meticulously and carefully as I could. And what I did was, I didn’t create a huge world and address is superficially. I built a very small world, a village and a Quag around it, and that was it with a limited number of characters. But, I gave great depth to everything that I wrote about.

You do a lot of work for libraries and literacy. You have a family literacy foundation, and this is a cause that you’ve been very passionate about.  And, you know, the world gets more and more digital and sometimes people say, “Why are books still important? Why are people reading stories?” Why do you do this work that you do?

David:  I was a library rat as a kid. And we’ve always had stories.  You know, humankind evolved around stories, whether it was hieroglyphics or drawings on the wall, tales that were told down, oral histories provided. So, we are a race and a civilization that grew up with stories and we love stories, because it communicates a lot of things from one generation to the next.

And libraries, for me, I’ve always considered them the foundation of the democracy. You walk into a building and it’s filled full with books. But, it’s really filled with ideas and diversity of opinion, and the things that are very important to people in a free and open society.

So, it really doesn’t matter how people read. I don’t care if you read on an e-book or you listened on an audio book or you read a paperback or a hardcover. What matters is that you read. You read the story.

And I’ve always thought that readers are far more interesting than people who don’t read, because you just are exposed to so much more. Your level of tolerance is far higher. You’re open-minded and you’re open to new ideas and opinions.

And it just makes you a much better, well-rounded person, plus the fact that, you know, reading is the most fundamental skill you’ll ever have. And without it, you can never achieve your potential. And so, people should just dive into as many books as they possible can.

ZodiacAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
At the dawn of time, there were 13 Houses in the Zodiac Galaxy. Now only 12 remain….

Rhoma Grace is a 16-year-old student from House Cancer with an unusual way of reading the stars. While her classmates use measurements to make accurate astrological predictions, Rho can’t solve for ‘x’ to save her life—so instead, she looks up at the night sky and makes up stories.

When a violent blast strikes the moons of Cancer, sending its ocean planet off-kilter and killing thousands of citizens—including its beloved Guardian—Rho is more surprised than anyone when she is named the House’s new leader. But, a true Cancerian who loves her home fiercely and will protect her people no matter what, Rho accepts.

Then, when more Houses fall victim to freak weather catastrophes, Rho starts seeing a pattern in the stars. She suspects Ophiuchus—the exiled 13th Guardian of Zodiac legend—has returned to exact his revenge across the Galaxy. Now Rho—along with Hysan Dax, a young envoy from House Libra, and Mathias, her guide and a member of her Royal Guard—must travel through the Zodiac to warn the other Guardians.

But who will believe anything this young novice says? Whom can Rho trust in a universe defined by differences? And how can she convince twelve worlds to unite as one Zodiac?

Embark on a dazzling journey with ZODIAC, the first novel in an epic sci-fi-meets-high-fantasy series set in a galaxy inspired by the astrological signs.

Review:

Zodiac by Romina Russell is the first book in her new YA Sci-Fi/ Fantasy series, which though different, can also be considered dystopian. This storyline revolves around astrology, with each sign being its own House. There are 12 Houses, and the world building in this book is nothing short of fantastic.

We meet our heroine Rhoma as a young child, who is constantly being taught by her mother about the galaxy, the houses, and how to use her powers to foresee the future through the psy energy. We next meet Rho as a teenager (16), who is practicing in a schoolroom prior to a test. Rho doesn’t do things exactly the way the teachers at school expect her to. When she does take the test looking at the galaxy, she sees a dark mass, which no one else can see. The teachers do not believe Rho, until a short time later, the House of Cancer (Rho’s house) is attacked, with fragments effecting other houses. Each house has a guardian, and during the attack on Cancer, the Guardian was killed, leaving so few to follow. Rho is put through a series of tests by the surviving leaders of Cancer, and to her shock, she is made the new Guardian.

Rho sees more dark mass coming, and forces herself to use her powers to see what is causing these unknown attacks. As she reaches out through the psy energy, Rho senses someone else out there. Someone who is controlling the dark mass, someone evil. When Rho investigates a long ago myth about a 13th House, she begins to realize that the myth is true. Ochus and the 13th house is real, and they have come to destroy or take over all the other houses. But no one will believe Rho.

What follows is an amazing story, as Rho is determined to visit all the houses to warn them of the impending attacks, and the true nemesis that they will face. During this journey, we meet the two men that will help her. Mathias is a top Lodestar of Cancer, who has been assigned to protect her. Hysan is a young Libra ambassador, with knowledge of advanced technology, who immediately becomes her friend. Together, they spend the exciting, at times frustrating journey, in this difficult task to make people realize that a myth is real. Needless to say this is an almost impossible task, but Rho despite her failure, is determined to keep pushing forward.

It is an exciting and very well written tale of a futuristic world along the Zodiac solar system, which I found very interesting. Each of the Houses have different specialties, and as we travel through the planets/houses, we get to meet some really different and nice characters along the way. Yes this is a love triangle, but not truly acted upon. We just know that she cares about both men.

Romina Russell has given us a different type of dystopian storyline, in a Sci-Fi world that is really fascinating. After reading this book, which was difficult to put down, I have come to respect Russell for her ability to put this together so well. The ending was sort of a cliffhanger that us anxiously waiting to return to this world.

Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse.

All her life, Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lives with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt’s South Carolina plantation instead–a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.

Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family’s twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn’t what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.
