Cat Patrick-Interview with the Author

Cat Patrick-Interview with the Author

With the May 7 release of THE ORIGINALS The Reading Cafe like to welcome the author Cat Patrick.

TRC: Hi Cat and welcome to The Reading Café. We would like to start with some background information for anyone who does not know about Cat Patrick. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Cat Patrick

Cat: Sure! I’m a mom of twins and a writer of young adult novels living near Seattle, WA with my family. I was born and raised in Wyoming, and have lived in Kansas, Boston, and San Francisco. I think I was British in a past life.

TRC: Your website bio information reads like a ‘bucket list’ of things you have done. What five things would you like to do that you have not already attempted?

Cat: Hmm…let’s see. I’d like to:
Walk the red carpet at the premiere of a movie adapted from one of my novels.
Be in a music video.
Travel to Ireland. And Spain. And Brazil. Okay, just travel.
Surf. Except that I’m really, really afraid of sharks and drowning.
Write a trilogy.

The OriginalsTRC: THE ORIGINALS is your May 7, 2013 young adult release about three cloned sisters. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

ORDER:  Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

Cat: The story is about the first human clones and the lengths they go to in order to hide their background from the outside world. They live as one person, with one of them attending school in the morning; the next going to classes in the afternoon; and the other handling extracurriculars and a part-time job. It works well until two of the clones fall for different guys. And, as with all of my books to date, there’s a mystery element driving the story forward, as well.

TRC: How much research (logistical, historical, scientific etc) was required in writing this particular storyline?

Cat: Most of my research for this book was scientific. I did a fair bit of reading about cloning, human and otherwise, and an extensive amount of bothering my Real Live Scientist friend about things like what labs look like, and whether my “fake science” was too far fetched. She was my Science Adviser for Revived, too, and is the reason I know about things like a PCR machine.

TRC: Would you please tell us about the catalyst that sparked your interest in writing a story about ‘cloned’ sisters?

Cat: The catalyst was my busyness, honestly. One day I was doing laundry while wishing I was simultaneously playing dress up with my twins AND writing a new scene. I thought: I need a clone! No, I need TWO clones! I started wondering what that would be like, then got sort of sucked into the idea…the story came together from there.

TRC: What do you believe is the message (if any) surrounding The Originals storyline?

Cat: I think the message is that we’re all unique, and should be proud of that. It’s easy to sink into a role and feel like you’re one of many–particularly in high school where standing out is sometimes viewed as a negative. I hope what people take from The Originals that it’s important to like what we see in the mirror, not in spite of our differences, but because of them.

TRC: Do your storyline characters speak to you and tell you the direction of the story or do you direct the characters?

Cat: They direct me for sure. I am not an outliner, so I usually just start with a vague concept and let the characters guide the story.

TRC: How do you deal with the stress and anxiety of writing deadlines?

Cat: I’m a tiny bit Type A and spent fifteen years doing deadline-driven public relations work; therefore, I tend to be highly motivated by the ticking clock. What’s harder for me, honestly, is slowing down. I’m working on something that is taking much longer to write than my first few books–and it should, because it’s bigger and more challenging–but part of me is always screaming, HURRY UP!

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about yourself?

Cat: That I know how to answer this question.

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Cat:
Continuing to raise two happy kiddos.
Publishing at least five new novels.
Obtaining fewer than 15 new wrinkles.
Visiting at least ten new cities.
Trying something new. Screenplays? Drumming? World domination?

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Cat: I don’t want to say too much, but my WIP is set in my home state and written from six different POVs, many of them boys, which I’m really enjoying.

Just like fate

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Cat: Thanks for giving me the opportunity to get spread the word about my books. People may also want to check out Just Like Fate, which I co-wrote with the amazingly talented Suzanne Young (A Need So Beautiful, The Program, etc.), and which is coming out in August of this year.

Happily Never After (Savannah Shadows #1) by Missy Fleming-a review

HAPPILY NEVER AFTER (Savannah Shadows #1) by Missy Fleming-a review

Happily Never After

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO/ The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 13, 2013

There’s no such thing as happy endings.

Savannah, Georgia is rumored to be the most haunted place in America. Quinn Roberts knows it is. She’s felt the presence of spirits her entire life, investigating and photographing them with her best friend. Only none of those encounters ever turned violent, until now. The menacing darkness feeding off her stepmother has promised she won’t live to see her eighteenth birthday.

After a chance meeting Quinn reluctantly allows actor Jason Preston into her life, which has complications of its own. She’s not used to letting people get close. Falling for him while fighting for her life, and her family’s legacy, only complicates things more. Jason shows her exactly what she stands to lose, especially when she’s being attacked by the mysterious entity. Each attack is more violent and terrifying than the last.

With Jason’s help, she dives into the Roberts’ family history, searching for a link between a woman who went missing a hundred and fifty years ago and what’s happening now. What they find is a brutal murder and that the ghost doesn’t just want to hurt Quinn, it wants revenge.

It wants her life.

••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: HAPPILY NEVER AFTER is the first storyline in Missy Fleming’s new paranormal/fantasy YA Savannah Shadows series focusing on 18 year old Quinn Roberts and the hauntings in and around Savannah Georgia. The reader is taken on a journey of house hauntings, spiritual possessions and ghost whisperers all meshed into a dark fairytale storyline familiar to most.

As the title suggests, this storyline is a dark retelling of a fairytale and in this particular case-Cinderella. Missy Fleming holds nothing back with the characterizations of the wicked step-mother and equally wicked step-sisters and, a supportive and equally loving ‘charming’ prince in the guise of a teen heart throb and Hollywood star.

Throughout the storyline we learn that much of the town of Savannah Georgia is awash in ghostly hauntings-spirits who refuse to move on because each has story to tell or out for revenge for a betrayal from the past. Quinn has the ability to hear and see these spirits and in one particular case the spirits have a deep and dark connection to Quinn’s family and her current dilemma.

The love angle adds a distinctive twist to the plot, but a twist that was fairly obvious as the storyline grew. Meeting 21 year old Jason Preston, a young Hollywood star, would awaken something long buried in Quinn but her relationship with Jason will be the catalyst that spurs one particular spirit to pull off the ultimate crime. In the end Quinn will be trapped on the outside looking into a world where she once thought she belonged.

Happily Never After has a number of the traditional earmarks of the Young Adult genre. The main characters have a definite high school mentality and were quick to stereotype and judge someone based on first impressions or incomplete prior knowledge. The relationship between Quinn and Jason is slow to build but not for a lack of trying on Jason’s part, and the wicked-step sisters will definitely remind you of the mean girls club. Add the potential for a love triangle flourishing within the final pages of the epilogue.

Many young adult authors are revisiting and retelling some of our favorite fairytale stories. Happily Never After closely follows Cinderella’s outline and the paranormal subplot is definitely predictable and not unexpected. For fans of both the YA genre and ghost stories, Happily Never After will be sure to please. Missy Fleming easily blends the reality of modern day Savannah Georgia, with a paranormal plotline that will see the past collide with the present when one spirit has only revenge on its’ mind. And for Quinn-there is no Happily Ever After.

The Legend of The Blue Eyes by B.Kristin McMichael-a review and giveaway

the Legend of The Blue eyes

Order Links: Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble/ KOBO

Release Date: March 15, 2013

B. Kristin McMichael dips her foot into the genre of Young Adult PNR, with The Legend of the Blue Eyes. Our heroine, Arianna Grace, has no idea that turning 16 will change her forever: SHE is the legend come to life. In a rather rapid transformation (literally), Arianna cannot seem to catch her breath before being flung into this supernatural culture.

“You need to feed, or the pain will get worse.”

“Feed?” she asked, confused. Arianna felt a jolt of pain rip through her body and she closed her eyes. With one fluid movement, the young man pulled a knife from his pocket and cut his own wrist. “What…?” Arianna began to ask, as she opened her eyes to find his bleeding wrist near her face. Arianna felt an urge come over her. Her eyes glazed over as she stared at the blood. Without thinking, she reached for his bleeding wrist and licked the blood away. Arianna felt the pain inside her subside. The world around her dimmed, and she passed out.

Welcome…not! A mysterious person whom has been communicating via discreet notes confirms a meeting to deliver answers about her family. Arianna’s mother died after giving birth and her father died when she was four; she is being raised by her aunt and uncle. The revelation is more than Arianna could have anticipated: Great Uncle, Gabriel, one of TWO living relatives, tells her she will be meeting her mother’s father, Lord Randolph, and will now live at his estate. Arianna is the product of a paranormal Romeo and Juliet: Her mother was a purebred dearg-dul (aka vampire) and her father was a purebred Baku (“night human” aka demon). The two clans have been at war for hundreds of years (because they both feed on blood) and Arianna has reached the age where she must convert into the new species. As you can imagine: BOTH sides want her! So much for Sweet 16.

Before I get into the love story(ies), I should explain the legend itself (though I didn’t learn of it until about 57% into the book!). The legend states that for the blue-eyed one to reach full power, he or she must take five companions: each of a different race. And just like that, this is no straightforward love story. Devin is the first person attached to Arianna. He is a “day human” (nothing supe about him) and groomed by Grandfather Randolph to be Arianna’s guardian. Their attraction is almost immediate, but Devin is hot and cold with his feelings; completely frustrating/confusing Arianna. He supplies her with blood, he even kissed her, but is that because she’s an “assignment”? Does he like her or doesn’t he? This part didn’t bother me so much because I swooooon for first love (YA or otherwise!); those insecurities are universal and relatable.

What I didn’t enjoy, though I’m not the exact demographic for YA, is that by adhering to the “collection” of custodians (those who will supply Arianna with blood and become irreversibly connected to her), there is an influx of feelings from every new custodian she takes on. Forget about the YA love triangle. Enter Turner the Lycan, Andrew the Baku, and Thomas the Tengu (he flies). Even as I’m writing this, I’m wondering: Aren’t we missing the Dearg-dul? Or is Devin fulfilling that role since he supplies blood? Perhaps she doesn’t need that race, because she is already part vampire, but then again she’s also Baku and so is her custodian, Turner. Questions…lots of questions. Not to worry! Ms. McMichael is set to release the sequel, Becoming a Legend, in June. I’M FIRST IN LINE!!!! ☺

Arianna learns she has been surrounded in a supernatural environment all along (vampires, lycans and bakus, oh my!). Problem is, under Lord Randolph’s instructions (Uncle Gabriel’s pretty guilty, too), no one was allowed to advise Arianna of the monumental legend she would come to fulfill. Arianna finds herself embroiled in kidnappings, poisonings, and nefarious plotting to undermine current leadership. With little choice but to embrace this new life, Ms. McMichael keeps you interested in Arianna’s rise to glory and pursuit of adjustment and happiness. The story is far from done.

In “P.S.”-mode, while I am no fan of lycans, I did like Turner’s approach (he is the second person attached to Arianna and has a really great role in the story). Uncertain of Arianna’s feelings for Devin, Turner moves with intention and lets Arianna know he is interested. Maybe if Jacob had approached Bella li…nah, even then, Edward was clearly the better choice! 😀 I hope Ms. McMichael trusts me to continue this series…I need to reconnect with this group.

The Goddess Legacy- The Goddess Secret by M.W. Muse – Reviews

The Goddess Legacy- The Goddess Secret by M.W. Muse – Reviews

The following reviews are the first two books of The Goddess series by M.W. Muse. The third book was recently released, with the blurb detailing information in our Spotlight on M.W. Muse.

Goddess Legacy

goddess legacy

Goddess Legacy is the first book in the Goddess Series by MW Muse.

High school is over for the summer and Legacy Kore is wondering if and when she will see her high school crush, newly graduated Adin Shepard again. Until he shows up at her surprise seventeenth birthday party – acting very friendly.  It’s then that she realizes that he may feel more for her than just friends.

Her excitement is short lived when after the party her guardian, Lissa informs her that her mother, whom she thought had died years ago, was actually still alive and in fact, a Greek Goddess, and that Legacy will possibly herself ascend into a Greek Goddess on her eighteenth birthday.  Emotionally wrought and exhausted from the days events, Legacy goes to sleep where she begins to have vivid dreams of storms, snakes and tornado’s.

Seeking solace in her best friend Calli Rhodes, Legacy confides in her what she has learned about her mother and herself. Just when she thought her life couldn’t get any stranger, Adin asks her out on a date – and for a brief moment in time Legacy tries to forget everything else and live in the moment that is unfolding in front of her. Could it possible that what she has wanted for so long, is about to become her reality?  Could her dream of a relationship with Adin come true?  Just as this is about to happen she meets an alarming handsome young man named River Rysaor.  Turns out River knows a lot more than Legacy could imagine, and opens a whole new world to her.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the Greek Mythology aspect of it. The relationship between Legacy and Adin is romantic and flirty.  Although at times I found Adin to be a bit annoying at how slow he wanted to take the relationship, but in the end I respected the reasoning why and found him completely endearing.  River adds an almost evil aspect to the story – yet you can’t quite figure out if he himself is evil or good? I enjoyed the friendship between Calli and Legacy – it brought back memories of myself with my best friend at that age.  Their relationship was real and believable.  Although I don’t think we know everything that there is to know about Calli yet.  The only part of the story that I had an issue with was Legacy’s dreams.  At times they were monotonous and unnecessary.  I found myself at one point putting the book down because I just could not possibly read another dream scene.  With that being said and overlooked – I loved the book and can not wait for the second in the series.  There are so many unanswered questions and so many things left unknown.

Goddess Secret

goddess secret

Goddess Secret is the second in the Goddess Series and while a bit too short for my liking, it was a wonderful and mythical continuation of Legacy’s life. Legacy is faced with her upcoming ascension and she thinks she has this goddess thing worked out. But as her relationship with Adin gets steamier and her emotions begin to take over she realizes that how she feels controls much more than she ever thought possible. And one secret is weighing heavily on her soul. How can one girl keep a secret so vital to the well-being of all those around her to herself, and will she be able to?

Legacy and Adin’s relationship continues to evolve as more players in the mythological game come to the foreground. Venus is the goddess Adin is bonded to, and her and Adin now attend college together. Will this cause heartache between Legacy and Adin or will this make their relationship stronger? I have fallen head over heels for Adin and his gentlemanly ways! I am very excited to read the next book in this series and to see where the story takes Legacy next.

Awaken (Empyreal #1) by Christal M. Mosley-a review

AWAKEN (Empyreal #1) by Christal M.Mosley-a review

Awaken

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK from Goodreads: Release Date January 2013

From Goodreads: AWAKEN to a NEW WORLD What if your entire life had been nothing more than a few broken images? What if every time you closed your eyes, another memory was lost? … Then … What if one day, those memories began to resurface…? Coralie Collier has never questioned the elements in her life … Until now. Strange dreams and unexplained encounters begin to unravel the world around her. As images begin to rise to the surface, missing pieces to her life begin to fall into place. Could there be more to Coralie’s existence than what appears? Will Coralie be able to unlock the secrets to her past? And what lies within the truth? A new life … A new world … … Awaken…

*************************

REVIEW: AWAKEN is the first storyline in Christal M. Mosley’s new young adult fantasy series Empyreal. As a reader of many YA storylines I have found similarities and differences amongst a number of books and series and, in this particular novel, there are several similarities to The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

Coralie Collier has purposely been kept in the dark about her heritage. When dreams and nightmares become a living and breathing reality, her memories would suddenly disappear and there would be black holes of emptiness and confusion whenever Coralie tried to grasp at images and thoughts. Thinking they were trying to protect their daughter, Coralie’s parents have endeavored to keep their daughter’s true identity a secret. As the one True Empyreal Warrior-a direct descendent of the Angels- Coralie’s future has been determined since her birth.

There are secrets from Coralie’s past of which she has no knowledge. When part of the truth is finally revealed Coralie is stunned to realize that parts of her memory have purposely been removed for her own protection. But in the grand scheme of world domination and pure power, keeping Coralie’s destiny a secret from her was an error in judgment by all concerned. Coralie has not been prepared for the upcoming war between good and evil, and in doing so could risk the lives of those hoping to protect her.

As a reader, I was frustrated at times at the incomprehensible situation brought about by Coralie’s parent’s refusal to inform their daughter about her heritage and the upcoming battles. And when it came time to explain, it took forever and several chapters before an explanation was finally spoken. And in this, the explanation was not very clear. I had hoped that more detail surrounding the Empyreal history would have been revealed especially her connection to the past and potential powers. Perhaps in the second storyline, more history and background of the Empyreal will be revealed.

As I said earlier, the premise is similar to The Mortal Instruments in that the protagonists are descendants of angels; the hero and his sister are Coralie’s guardians and fight to rid the world of the demons; the evil are warriors gone rogue; kidnapped siblings; jilted lovers; and a young woman who has been secreted away from her destiny only to discover she is the key to everyone’s survival. I am not saying that this is a bad thing, but it was a similarity none the less. I suspect that the missing sibling will play a major role in the war between good and evil. And there is mention of several supernatural powers including vampires and werewolves, witches and warlocks and, the fae who may or may not have a storyline in the upcoming battles.

Overall, AWAKEN is an interesting and enjoyable storyline. If you are a fan of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments you will definitely see some similarities but you should also have no problem seeing the bigger story. I wish Christal M. Mosley all the best with the release of AWAKEN. I did have an issue with the author’s continuous use of ellipses ( ….) but it was explained to me that the protagonist is reticent and naïve, and is having some issues trying to explain herself or get her point across.

The Collector by Victoria Scott – a Review

The Collector by Victoria Scott – a Review

The Collector

Links to order The Collector: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository

The Collector by Victoria Scott is her first book in her new Dante Walker series.

Dante Walker is a cocky, arrogant,  selfish soul collector.  His mission is to claim the souls of the earth’s less than stellar humanity.

Dante is called upon by The Boss Man (Lucifer) and is told to collect the soul of one Charlie Cooper and to do it any way possible.  He has ten days to accomplish this goal.  Dante is on it – but little did he know that by taking on this mission his world would change forever, and not in the way he expected.

Charlie is young, innocent and pure of heart.  Her intentions are always for the good of others.  Charlie lives her life by the rules.  Stays within the bounderies of what is acceptable and never does anything to get into trouble.  That’s about to change.

Upon meeting Charlie – Dante wonders what is so special about her.  She is not the least bit attractive, she walks with a limp, she’s that girl in school that never gets noticed, that you never give a second thought about.  But she has her friends Blue and Annabelle and her loyalties to them run deep.  What could The Boss Man possibly want with her soul?  And at what lengths will Dante go to claim it?

I must admit that at the start of this book – I despised Dante, did not like him one ounce.  Even though he is young and extremely attractive – I found his attitude and demeanor off-putting.  To the point that I did not want him near Charlie and almost didn’t want to finish the book.  But it was this strange range of emotions that Dante brought out in me that made me continue reading and push forward and I am extremely happy that I did.   I ended up coming to adore Dante and the relationship he shared with Charlie and her friends.  While clearly his intentions were not real in the beginning – watching him grow into the character he became was heart warming. To watch him form relationships with others that he had never had in his life before was endearing.  I will even admit that in the end – Dante even made me cry!

This book is filled with teen angst, turmoil, tragedy and love. It is heart warming, gut-wrenching and satisfying.

The ending was not at all what I was expecting and the few loose ends leaves you wanting more.  I look forward to the next installment of Dante!

Prophecy Girl by Cecily White – a Review

Prophecy Girl by Cecily White – a Review

Prophecy Girl

Link to order Prophecy Girl: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository / Kobo

Prophecy Girl by Cecily White is her first book in her YA Angel Academy trilogy.  The premise of a young girl attending an Academy of children born from angels, who are considered Guardians in training.  Ami is our heroine, and she is Lucifer’s daughter.

Ami spends her nights with her best friend Lisa, looking for demons for their training practice.  Lisa keeps bugging her to get herself a date for the upcoming dance, much to Ami annoyance, as she is not interested in any of the boys at the academy.  But that changes the moment she meets Jackson (Jack), the new head trainer, whom she immediately finds herself attracted to, and feels the sparks.  Jack tries to keep his distance from Ami, not explaining why, but his avoidance seems to be based on fear.

Cecily White has a created a great character in Ami, who is funny, sarcastic, independent,  and simply fun to follow in this exciting story.  Jack turns out to be an excellent character also, and meant for Ami, but destiny will rise up and keep the two apart.  But Ami is not one to step back, and she is determined to win Jack.  What she doesn’t know, is she is dangerous to him.  But that will not stop either of them to connect.

The story involves a prophecy that Ami is destined to fill, and Jack could be in danger.  We follow the two of them on an adventure that has them on the run, and their friends protecting them.  We get to meet some cool characters, like the kids at the academy or Jack’s friends, such as a vampire and a werewolf.  Though this was a fun read, make no mistake, it is exciting story, filled with danger, lots of battles, twists, surprises along the way, with lives in danger of being lost.

Will Ami fulfill the prophecy that she so does not want to do?  Will Jack protect Ami, or will he die doing so?  Who will survive the final battle?  So many questions, and since this is spoiler free, you need to read this book to find the answers.  Early on, it was a bit slow, as we meet Ami and Lisa, but quickly it became a fun read. The story took a major turn in the last 1/3 of the book, and I was unable to put it down, since a blink could cause you to lose another revelation.   Cecily White has done a fantastic job with this book, her characters are refreshing and you find yourself liking most of them.  I look forward to the next book of this series.

Dear Cassie by Lisa Burstein – a Review

Dear Cassie

Links to purchase Dear Cassie: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository

Description:

What if the last place you should fall in love is the first place that you do?

You’d think getting sent to Turning Pines Wilderness Camp for a month-long rehabilitation “retreat” and being forced to re-live it in this journal would be the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.

You’d be wrong.

There’s the reason I was sent to Turning Pines in the first place: I got arrested. On prom night. With my two best friends, who I haven’t talked to since and probably never will again. And then there’s the real reason I was sent here. The thing I can’t talk about with the guy I can’t even think about.

What if the moment you’ve closed yourself off is the moment you start to break open?

But there’s this guy here. Ben. And the more I swear he won’t—he can’t—the deeper under my skin he’s getting. After the thing that happened, I promised I’d never fall for another boy’s lies.

And yet I can’t help but wonder…what if?

Review:

DEAR CASSIE by Lisa Burstein is the follow up novel to Pretty Amy.  This takes place right after the girls are arrested for possession and intent to sell after they were stood up by their prom dates.  Cassie tells her own story starting from the airport until she arrives at Turning Pines Wilderness Camp.  She journals her whole experience at the camp. This is really Cassie’s story of going from a hurt and vulnerable girl, to one who learns to love and forgive in an unlikely setting.

Her fellow “campers” are an interesting mix.  There is Nez, the compulsive liar, Troyer, the girl who won’t talk and then there is Ben.  Ben is trying to break down the barriers that Cassie has erected around her heart. Cassie doesn’t want anything to do with him, because of the past betrayals in her life.

Cassie is not always a sympathetic character.  She has been badly hurt in life and she lashes out at the people who are trying to help her heal.  Her vocabulary is peppered with the F bomb and she is constantly chewing her cinnamon gum, because she craves her cigarettes.  Once the author allows Cassie’s character to crack and begin to heal, the reading became easier and I started rooting for her success.  It’s hard to be a teenage girl and Cassie has many things that she needs to heal from and people she needs to forgive.  Cassie is a tough nut to crack!!

Ben is a wonderful character, and he never gives up on Cassie!  He is funny, sympathetic and he needs to convince Cassie that he will not betray her.  He helps her to learn to move on in life, and to let go on some of her pain and sadnessLisa Burstein is very gifted with her character development.  She allowed me to go from hating a character to feeling nothing but love and admiration for Cassie.  This book would be great for teenagers who are feeling alone in life and for the adults that love them!
