She has brand-new powers she doesn’t understand, and her family is still trying to figure out how to function in the wake of her amnesiac father’s return home. Then, on the night of her Deathday party, Rose discovers her father’s memory loss has been a lie.

As she rushes to his side, the two are ambushed and pulled through a portal to the land of Adas, a fairy realm hidden in the Caribbean Sea. There, Rose is forced to work with a group of others to save Adas. Soon, she begins to discover the scope of her powers, the troubling truth about her father’s past, and the sacrifices he made to save her sisters.

But if Rose wants to return home so she can repair her broken family, she must figure out how to heal Adas first.

Review:

Wayward Witch by Zoraida Cordova is the 3rd book in her Brooklyn Brujas series.   I have not read the first two books in this series, and was not sure how that would affect my reading this book.  However, I am happy to say that Cordova gave us a glimpse at the family characters early, and Wayward Witch read very well as a standalone.  In each book, each Mortiz sister (there are three) takes center stage, and in Wayward Witch, the story revolves around the younger sister, Rose.

The story starts out with Rose’s family having her Deathday party, as well as with them all dealing with their father returning and not remembering where he had been.  Rose is also trying to come to terms with her new found power, which is hacking magic from others.  Almost immediately, when she is talking outside with her father, they are both grabbed and transported through a portal to Adas, a magical fairy realm to help stop the rot that is destroying the land. The King of Adas wants Rose’s powers, and has her father locked up to ensure she helps them, since the father supposedly was partially responsible for this issue.

Rose will begin to train with a group of others that have magical ability, with Iris (King’s daughter and commander) and Arco (King’s son) leading the adventure to save Adas.  There were a number of very good characters created by Cordova, especially the team, and the bad King.  At first I thought Iris was too tough, but over time I really got to like her, as she was a very good heroine to work with Rose. I also loved Lin, who became her best friend, as well as Arco, who was not only cute, but a friend to help them find the dark rot and destroy it.  Iris and Arco know their father is evil, and will think nothing of eliminating anyone who disagrees with him.

What follows is an exciting, action packed, intense adventure with Rose able to use some of her powers to save her new friends, and especially Iris. Though at times, some of them become resentful that she is able to pull on their powers, but it is Rose who will find the truth about the dark rot, and pull them all together to right a wrong and save the land. Wayward Witch was a wonderful intriguing story that not only captivated me, but kept me unable to put the book down.  This different world was so very well written by Zoraida Córdova.  If you enjoy fantasy, great world building and exciting adventure, you need to read this book.  I for one plan on going back and reading the first two books.

Sisters of Sword and Song by Rebecca Ross – a Review

Sisters of Sword and Song by Rebecca Ross – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository / Google Play / Apple

Description:
After eight long years, Evadne will finally be reunited with her older sister, Halcyon, who has been proudly serving in the queen’s army. But when Halcyon appears earlier than expected, Eva knows something has gone terribly wrong. Halcyon is on the run, hunted by her commander and charged with murder.

Though Halcyon’s life is spared during her trial, the punishment is heavy. And when Eva volunteers to serve part of Halcyon’s sentence, she’s determined to find out exactly what happened. But as Eva begins her sentence, she quickly learns that there are fates much worse than death.

Review:

Sisters of Sword and Song by Rebecca Ross is a fantastic YA fantasy.  Having read a previous duology by Ross, I looked forward to reading this book.  I loved it, and best of all, it is standalone novel, which means you don’t have to wait to see what happens in the next book. ?

Sisters of Sword and Song focuses on two sisters, Halcyon and Evadne, who were very close.  Halcyon is the older sister, who left home 8 years ago to join the Queen’s army, where she rose to become a powerful and loyal warrior in the Bronze Legion.  Evadne was excited, as she awaited Halcyon’s return home to visit after all these years, but to her surprise, she is awakened in the middle of the night by a desperate Halcyon.  Evadne will learn that Halcyon is now wanted for murder, though it was an accident; but she wanted to see her sister, and run before she is found, or they will kill her despite not being intentional.  Swearing Evadne to not revealing that she came to see her, Halcyon runs away; only to be found a short time later, and captured to and tried for murder. Evadne, and her family travel to support Halcyon, as they knew she would never murder anyone and she was also so loyal to the Queen and her commander.

Evadne worshipped her sister, and when then the sentencing is harsh (15 years in three concurrent 5 year terms), it will be Evadne who will offer to share the penalty to help save her sister’s life.  The Lord Commander Straton, whose son, Xander was the one who was killed, will step in and accept those terms, with Evadne being the one who will spend 5 years working for the Straton family.

What follows is a tense, exciting, action filled and intriguing story that is filled with many surprising twists. We follow as Halcyon is sent to prison, where she is quickly under duress, as those in charge are determined to get information from her about the mission she and Xander were on when the accident occurred. One of the villians, a mage, arranged to have her poisoned, in order to weaken her and break through her mind to find the information needed.  Will she survive?  During that same period, Evadne is put to work as a servant, until Damon ( Xander’s brother and Straton’s other son), who is a Mage, takes a liking to her, and eventually pulls her to work for him as a scribe. Together they will slowly find their attraction growing, as well as becoming a perfect team; using the mage’s ability to sing (with Evadne joining the song) to use magic that will help them defeat the enemy.  Both Damon and Evadne will be the ones who will step up to take over the dangerous mission to gain a relic that will help save the Queen, against a evil and strong mage, who happens to be Straton’s sister.  Too tell too much more would be spoilers, but this was an exciting, mind blowing adventure that held me on the edge of my seat, wondering who will die and who will survive.

I loved both Halcyon and Evadne, as they not only made great heroines, but it was so great to see their sisterhood bond.  I also loved Damon and Evadne slow burn romance, as they made a great couple.  She willingly helping Damon, despite the dangers; and he turned into such a great hero, so sweet and charming.  I got a kick out of Evadne discovering her new wings, and her ability to fly both her and Damon to safety.

Sisters of Sword and Song was a fantastic story, so very well written by Ross.  This was a fantasy that had a bit of everything, such as mythology, magic, mages, scribes, warriors, gods, magical relics and horrible villains.  This was a journey to save the Queen, against evil forces; especially against a terrifying evil and ultra-powerful villain.  If you enjoy fantasy, especially a rare standalone, then look no further than Sisters of Sword and Song. I have come to adore the writing of Rebecca Ross.

Rage and Ruin by Jennifer L. Armentrout – a Review

Rage and Ruin by Jennifer L. Armentrout – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
A half human, half angel and her bonded gargoyle protector must work with demons to stop the apocalypse while avoiding falling in love. The Harbinger is coming…but who or what is it? All of humankind may fall if Trinity and Zayne can’t win the race against time as dark forces gather.

As tensions rise, they must stay close together and patrol the DC streets at night, seeking signs of the Harbinger, an entity that is killing Wardens and demons with no seeming rhyme or reason. Forbidden to be with each other, Zayne and Trinity fight their feelings and turn to unusual sources for help—the demon Roth and his cohorts. But as deaths pile up and they uncover a sinister plot involving the local high school and endangering someone dear to Zayne, Trin realizes she is being led…herded…played for some unknown end. As anger builds and feelings spiral out of control, it becomes clear that rage may be the ruin of them all.

Review:

Rage and Ruin by Jennifer L Armentrout is the 2nd book in her fantastic YA fantasy paranormal, The Harbinger series. Refresher: Trinity Marrow is a trueborn (half human/half angel); she has spent all of her life protected and trained by Wardens. In the last book, Trinity was betrayed by her protector, Misha, and she used her growing powers to kill him to save herself and others.  Zayne, is our hero, and he becomes Trinity’s Warden protector, as we learned then that it was Zayne who was supposed to be Warden who bonded with her.

Rage and Ruin picks up where the first book left off.  Both Trinity and Zayne can feel the attraction between them, but since he is now her protector, any relationship between them is forbidden.  They both work together to search for the Harbinger, who has been killing Wardens and Demons.  Each day, Zayne will work on training Trinity, especially with her eyesight disability, to teach her how to sense those attacking her out of her sight.  They also go out to search and find out who is the Harbinger, and stop him before the world is destroyed.

I really liked Trinity and Zayne together, but both of them early on kept distancing themselves or fighting, and Trinity did not know how to handle her jealousy that Zayne was friendly with other girls.  The sarcastic banter between them went on for quite a bit, but the chemistry and sexy tension between them was sizzling.  It was great to see Roth and Layla again, especially Roth who would use a favor that Trinity owed him to get something he wanted back.  They did raise the bar when they were around to work with Trinity and Zayne.

What follows is a wild exciting intense action-packed adventure, with a number of surprising twists. I loved Zayne and Trinity together, even if it was a bit slow burn; but once they allowed themselves to succumb to their feelings, it was combustible.  As I said previously, I loved many of the secondary characters, especially Roth, Layla, Peanut, and Cayman. To say too much more, would be spoilers, as there are many surprises, and I do not want to ruin it for anyone.

Rage and Ruin is a fantastic addition to this series, with a wonderful couple, and an exciting, tense, passionate adventure, which Armentrout kills us at the end with a wild, heartbreaking tearjerker of a cliffhanger.  Jennifer L. Armentrout once again gives us a fun, heartwarming, romantic, as well as intense action filled story that kept me on the edge of our seat.  I will be counting the days for next book in this series.

Review:

Power Divided by S. Behr is the first book in her new YA fantasy The Evolutionaries series. This is a new author for me, and I was pleasantly surprised how much I did enjoy Power Divided.   The story starts with a bang, as our heroine, Violet, who is the princess of Neyr (part of the Nine Realms of Amera), has to show her unique abilties, when everything goes haywire and her father lies mortally wounded. Amerans have many extraordinary abilities, such as flying in air, able to live under water, absorb energy, etc.

A distraught Violet runs away only to find herself in the middle of nowhere, with no food or water, and a cute adorable baby fox to help her find her way.  In a cave, she comes across a wall/door, and as she presses her hand on the wall, it automatically opens up for her and her fox companion, who is injured.  It is here we meet one of the best characters in this story, Hailey, a holographic (AI), who will help the injured fox (named Jane), and explain that she is in the “Ark”, a treasure of history locked up, with information of everything before the ice age destroyed the world.  Once she is in this Ark, the storyline does slow down a bit, as with all first books in fantasy, there is a lot world building.  But less then a quarter of the way into the story, it begins to pick up and become very exciting.

Violet is in her glory for a few weeks, having always loved history, as Hailey helps show her how the world evolved, until she knows something is wrong, and she needs to go home; especially with a new group of people trying to access the Ark.

When Violet arrives back home, she is happy to find her father still alive; but she will also learn why she has never been able to master an ability; which not only angers her, but causes a rift between her family.  But Violet has to be strong, and step up as the princess she is, now that Amera has been visited by a group (Hg-1) who have come to get help, as they are being threatened by another group that is determined to destroy them.

The best part of this story is the wonderful secondary characters that Behr has created.  We meet the group who have arrived for help, such as twins Kai and Lance, and young Penelope.  We also get to know more about the Amerans, which include Violet’s friends, such as Lily, Rall and princes from other Ameran realms, such as Leo & Siri.   I really liked all the characters, which always makes the story so much more enjoyable.  Of course, I absolutely loved Hailey, who was so much fun, and Jane, the baby fox.

What follows is an exciting action filled suspenseful adventure that will have us holding our breaths in the last third of the book, with a surprise attack, destruction, death and the amazing abilities by those we began to care about to survive.  I loved Violet, who became such a great heroine, as well as bringing everyone together as a team.

I really enjoyed Power Divided, and amazed how well S. Behr wrote this story, being her debut novel; especially being Fantasy and all the world building. I for one, cannot wait to read the next book in this series.  If you love fantasy, then I suggest you read  Power Divided.

Alpha and Omega by Carol T. Luna – a Review

Alpha and Omega by Carol T. Luna – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo

Description:
Ao never believed in monsters—not after being branded one since childhood. Exiled, he lives with his adoptive guardian, Kaisei Aizawa, amidst verdant valleys surrounded by desolation.

Humanity only had themselves to blame for the wretched landscape. Their war poisoned the seas. Their greed coveted the fertile and the green.

Their ambition set it ablaze.
One hundred years had passed since the war banished Talus to the skies. Doomed to chase the sun, the once proud nation survives as a floating city. But the fallen always hunger for more.

When the Talarians descend to claim the earth as their own, Ao escapes capture—but nothing is without its price. The only man he ever saw as family, Kaisei, is imprisoned instead.

Ao vows to rescue him, no matter the cost—even if it means taking a stand against the most powerful nation left on earth. He knows of the risks. He knows of the dangers. But never would he know that someday, somehow, he would finally believe in monsters.

Review:

Alpha and Omega by Carol T. Luna is the first book in her Project Blue series.  After killing his sister, Ao was banished, he would have died if it hadn’t been for the Doc, he took him, and began to teach him trapping and showed Ao how to fight, how to put that restless energy into something else. They live a simple life, going to the outpost to trade. It’s Ao’s highlight, and he has managed to get a gift for his friend and guardian.

Not quite sure how old Ao is, I’m thinking late teens maybe.

They are trading when it all goes horribly wrong for Ao. Talarians are seen in the distance, this land they live in isn’t to be invaded. But that’s not what happens, Ao goes to fight, and in the ensuing commotion, his beloved friend and guardian Kaisei is taken!!

Reading the back cover, I got the distinct impression that Ao was either disfigured or looked like a monster. So are we talking metaphorically? Because he killed his sister? He’s an outcast in his village, so maybe he sees himself a monster.

Ao needs to find and rescue Kaisei, if not for his friend, Ao would have been lost. He’s been like a father to him, but Ao has no idea where to go, so he follows the slave train in the hopes of seeing and maybe freeing Kaisei…..

Ao is captured by the Talarian’s, but he manages to escape. Still hoping to find Kaisei, Ao never gives up hope, and there are a lot of things he has to do in order to survive…..

Ao is found and cared for by a group of freedom fighters known as the Silver Legion. He joins them in his bid to find and rescue Kaisei. There are plenty of battles to keep the bloodthirsty happy. Monsters that hunt them as well as the Talarian guards. Ao gets himself into a few scrapes, and a few close moments to dying. But his will to survive is stronger than his will to give up, he knows Doc is alive, and would be searching for him if he could.

So does Ao find Kaisei? Will he be persuaded to join the Silver Legion? And what are the Talarian’s up to? And why do they only want the young people? A few questions that I’m hoping the next book will answer ?

Wow, that was really good. A post apocalyptic world. The author had really captured it well. The fight scenes were pretty well graphic, but brief. The characters were really well thought out, and I could picture them really easily. Daru was one of my favourite’s the trader and friend, some of his witty comebacks had me chuckling. Gen a silver legion fighter, her dry sense of humour is a good companion for Ao as they search for his guardian. The scenes flow from one chapter to another (you get some that seem to jump around too much). I’m definitely ready to read book 2.

Review:

Forbidden Queen by RJ Vickers is the first book in her new Forbidden Queen series.  Kalleah, our heroine, lives in hiding in a small village with her mother, as she hides a magical power (she can draw energy from people)  all of her life.  Now at 18 years old, her mother decides it is now time for her to return to Baylore, where her mother once again becomes Queen and Kalleah will meet her father the King.  Her mother left Baylore when Kalleah was a baby for her safety, and now it’s time for her to claim her rightful heir to become Queen of Itrea.  But her forbidden magical power is still considered bad, and many fear her powers, especially the Truthbringers, who preach that Kalleah is dangerous and are determined to make sure that she will never be Queen.  This includes her father’s brother, who plans on pushing his son, Leoth to be King, even if they have to destroy her.  At first Leoth was scheming, but in a short time they became friends, with Kalleah finding herself falling for him.  But was his feelings toward her real; can she trust him?

While the story revolves around the upcoming election of either a queen or king, Kalleah was the center of the story. Kalleah, had many enemies, tried to make friends, as she knew she would need them to be able to win the election, in which she needed 20 votes to win.  I really loved Kalleah, as she made a terrific heroine, being smart, brave, powerful and she needed to find a way to ensure the people that she wanted peace and they had no reason to fear her.  Will Kalleah survive and win the election?  To tell too much more would be spoilers and I do not want to ruin the story for you.

Forbidden Queen was captivating and intriguing story and held my attention throughout the book.  This is well written by RJ Vickers, as she has created a unique world building.  I look forward to the next book in this series, Innocent Queen.

••••••••••

REVIEW: THE LAST MYSTIC is the fourth and final instalment in Susan Kaye Quinn’s young adult SINGULARITY sci-fi/ dystopian series focusing on the merging of mind, body and soul with the technology of the future.

BACKGROUND: The ‘Singularity’ resulted in most of the world’s population transforming themselves into a hybrid known as the Ascended-part man/part machine but the few remaining humans become what is known as the Legacy-the true descendants of humankind. The Singularity series looks at the struggle between the Ascended and everyone else.

Told from first person perspective (Elijah Brighton) THE LAST MYSTIC continues to focus on the war between the Ascended and the Legacy. It has been prophesied that the world is approaching a second singularity whereby all of the human population will become the Ascended but Eli Brighton, once dead, but now resurrected, is the face of the resistance, a resistance that will soon discover the second singularity has already begun, with the help of Eli himself. As Eli continues to bridge between the living and the dead, the resistance is targeted by the ascenders, time and again.

Eli Brighton has the power of life and death, resurrection and renewal. With his ability to resurrect the dead, Eli’s friends realize that they are at the outset of a new world order.

THE LAST MYSTIC and the SINGULARITY series focuses on the mind, body, and soul: a spiritual storyline that questions the existence of God, and life after death; and if there is something beyond the here and now, where is it, and who will be in charge?. The ascended believe they no longer have a soul, a belief that will be questioned every time Eli enters the ‘fugue’ but Eli’s own death, resurrection and self-actualization becomes the benchmark by which everyone measures their own experience.

Susan Kaye Quinn pulls the reader into a fantastic world of speculative fiction using supernatural, paranormal, science, and futuristic concepts. A world of robotics and AI fused with the human mind allows for the possibility of immortality but at the cost of one’s soul. THE LAST MYSTIC is a fascinating and mesmerizing look at the possibility of the impossible.

Spartan Destiny by Jennifer Estep – Review & Giveaway

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository / Google Play / Apple

Description:
This Spartan makes her own destiny . . .

Most kids at the Colorado branch of Mythos Academy know me as Rory Forseti, the daughter of Reaper assassins. Secretly, I’m a member of Team Midgard, a group of students and adults tasked with stopping Covington, the evil leader of the Reapers of Chaos. For me, the mission is a deeply personal one, since Covington is also the man who murdered my parents.

When my friends and I get a lead on a powerful artifact that Covington wants to steal, we think we finally have a chance to thwart the Reapers and stop them for good. Team Midgard comes up with a plan, but everything goes sideways, and I’m suddenly in the fight of my life.

My worst fears might have come true, but I know what my Spartan destiny is—to save my friends, or die trying . . .

Review:

Spartan Destiny by Jennifer Estep is the 3rd book in her Mythos Academy: Colorado series. As I have noted previously, I am a big fan of the original Mythos Academy series, and have been enjoying this spin off.

Rory Forseti, our heroine (and cousin of Gwen Frost) is a Spartan warrior, who has many strengths and powers. Rory is a member of the Midgard (part of the Protectorate, who fight the bad Reapers), and the team works together to stop the Reapers, and save some of artifacts that Covington (villain) and Drake are always after.   Covington is the evil leader of the Reapers of Chaos, having also killed Rory’s parents, and will stop at nothing to retrieve all artifacts, especially the Narcissus Heart.

In Spartan Destiny, Rory and her wonderful team (Ian, Zoe, Mateo, Takeda, Rachel, etc), find themselves in death defying situations quite often, as the Reapers, led by Covington and Drake, try to steal some powerful and destructive artifacts, starting with Fafnir’s Dagger.  We learn early that Rory has replaced many of the powerful artifacts with duplicates, to help prevent Covington in finding them.  The intense action throughout the book was amazing, as I was on the edge of my seat throughout the non-stop action; with Rory trying to stop the creatures created by the artifacts.

What follows is an ultra-exciting, non-stop action adventure that never let up from start to finish.  The last half of the book was so intense as we raced to the finish, with Rory’s life on the line.  Rory and her sword Babs, had to find a way to save her friends, who were forced to turn on her by Covington using his artifacts.  Besides the great secondary characters that are part of her team, and her aunt, I loved the Gryphons that come to help her.

Spartan Destiny was an amazing story that held me holding my breath a number of times.  I can’t say enough about Jennifer Estep and her writing.  This was a fantastic, exciting, intense, wild and wonderful story.  If you have not read this series, you need to start with the first book before reading this one.  I do fear that this could be the end of the series, as it was a satisfying conclusion, but I hope Jennifer continues, as I do love this series.
