About the book: Release Date August 19, 2014

Crossover from the Otherworld Series to Fly By Night Series.

New York Times bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn returns with another thrilling foray into Otherworld—introducing a new cast of heroes alongside the D’Artigo sisters…

When the half-demon Carter approaches Menolly and her sisters desperately asking for their help, they think he’s just had a tiff with Shimmer, his blue dragon girlfriend.

But after talking to Alex Radcliffe, the owner of the Fly By Night Magical Investigations Agency where Shimmer works, they suspect that she has been kidnapped by an old enemy of Alex’s.

Now, Alex must join forces with the D’Artigo sisters in a desperate race to find Shimmer before Julian, a powerful vampire from Alex’s past with a grudge to settle, can use the dragon to wreak havoc on Seattle as revenge.

••••••••••••••••••

Review: The help that Carter (who is half Titan, half demon) has given Menolly and her sisters (the D’Artigos) has helped them immensely in their battle with Shadow Wing, so when he calls needing their help, they don’t hesitate. Once he tells them why he’s so worried about Shimmer, they aren’t convinced that there is an actual problem. But, once they head to the Fly By Night Magical Investigations Agency to inquire about Shimmer, it doesn’t take them long to find out that there is indeed something wrong. It seems that Alex, Shimmer’s boss at Fly By Night, had made an enemy long ago and has made his way to Seattle. And, it appears that he will do anything to make Alex pay, including going after his employees. Namely, Shimmer.

When they finally figure out what’s going on, they all head out to try and save Shimmer. And, wouldn’t you know it, seems something is amiss in the perpetually haunted Greenbelt District, aka, Spooksville Central. They eventually find where Shimmer is being held and come up with a plan to get her out. The big problem? She’s being held by a powerful vampire who has company….. Looks like it’s gonna be a long night…..

This novella is a fast paced introduction to Galenorn’s new series and I believe it will be another hit for her. I loved meeting the new characters. Alex, the boss is a vampire. Bette, the assistant is a water spirit and Ralph is a werewolf. And, from what I’ve read, we’re in for a hell of a ride. Even though this is a short story, it was action packed and set up the new series very well. I believe the first novel will be released in July 2015 and I can’t wait! Well done Yasmine Galenorn, well done.

Crimson Veil
Otherworld #15
by Yasmine Galenorn
Genre: paranormal, adult, romance
Release Date: January 28, 2014

We’re the D’Artigo sisters: savvy half-human, half-Fae ex-operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. My sister Camille is a wicked good witch with three gorgeous husbands. Delilah is a two-faced werecat and a Death Maiden. And me? I’m Menolly, a vampire married to a scorching hot werepuma. And right now, we’re facing enemies on all sides…

It’s been a long and devastating week. Back in Otherworld, war has decimated the elfin city of Elqaneve, our father has gone missing, and Shadow Wing has managed to obtain another spirit seal. On the home front, somebody burned down my bar, the Wayfarer, killing eight people, including a friend.

To make matters worse, we still haven’t found a way to stop Lowestar Radcliff—the daemon in charge of a supernatural corporate power grab. He’s attempting to awaken Suvika, the lord of vice and corrupt businessmen, and we have to stop him. Our enemies are closing in on all sides, and this time, there’s no place to hide.

•••••••••••••••••

Crimson Veil begins right on the heels of Autumn Whispers. The war is still being waged in Otherworld, decimating everything in its path. The girls are tired and just can’t catch a break. On top of the Wayfarer being burned down, another vampire club is torched. However, this time, the D’Artigo sisters get there in time to figure out what’s going on…….sort of. Seems there is an arsonist hell bent on taking out as many vampires as they can.

There’s still the problem of stopping Lowestar Radcliff from awakening Suvika, and, they still haven’t found their friends’ missing friend from Autumn Whispers. Things happen rather fast in this installment of the series. The girls had met some of their cousins, whom they didn’t know existed, in the previous book, and one of them ends up being more than he initially seemed, but can they trust him with all that’s going on Earthside and in Otherworld? They decide to take baby steps with him and see how it goes.

They soon realize that the things happening Earthside are tied together and race against time to find the missing and stop Radcliff. There’s also the question of what to do with the Earth Seals that they have in their possession, because if they fall into the wrong hands, all is lost.

Galenorn has changed up her writing in this series a little bit. As I said in my previous review of Autumn Whispers, she normally ties up the current storyline as we progress in the overall arc of the series. She didn’t do that in Autumn Whispers, and she didn’t do it in this one either. But, it works for me. Once we reach the climactic “battle” scene, the way that one of the bad guys is taken out literally made me laugh out loud!! But, in a good way. There are some devastating developments as they find out what has happened to some who are missing, and some developments that leave you cheering. As always, we get to see all of the D’Artigo sisters’ motley crew and the efficiency with which they work together. They all have the “take no prisoners” attitude and do what is needed in any given situation to ensure that those they love are protected. If you’re a fan of series full of all kinds of beings and creatures, you will not be disappointed with this one. I can’t wait for the next installment!

About the book: Release Date September 24, 2013

We’re the D’Artigo sisters: savvy half-human, half-Fae ex-operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. My sister Camille is a wicked-good witch with three sexy husbands. My sister Menolly is a vampire married to a wildly hot werepuma. And me? I’m Delilah, a two-faced werecat and Death Maiden. The Supe Community is in danger and now it’s up to us to unravel a mystery to which we may not want the answers…

When two vampiric software engineers approach us about a missing colleague, we don’t expect to find much. But then Grandmother Coyote steps in and our simple missing persons case rapidly devolves into a nightmare of debauchery, slavery, and corporate greed. Now, we must infiltrate and destroy an underground organization of influential men, led by the mysterious Lowestar Radcliff, before they discover we’re on to them. But one misstep puts our whole operation and our lives in peril, and I must unleash my powers as a Death Maiden, even if it means destroying someone I love.

Review:

As the D’Artigo sisters embark on trying to help out a couple of friends find a missing colleague, they have no idea how things are going to change. Besides their ongoing battle with Shadow Wing, who rules the subterranean realm and wants to open the portals to unleash hell on earth, they are approached by Grandmother Coyote, one of the Hags of Fate, for help. And no one, I mean NO ONE, refuses her. She informs the sisters of coming changes that will wreak havoc on earth as well back home in Otherworld. They are also made aware of a power emanating from a building in downtown Seattle. Seems these sisters just can’t catch a break. Oh, and Delilah’s training as a death maiden will finally put her front and center when she is called to go in on her own to take a soul to it’s final resting place…….or two.

Once they start their search for the friend of their colleague’s, they soon realize that things aren’t as simple as they first appeared. They soon learn that the missing friend was taken into an underground organization by a less than stellar citizen who has far reaching ties and seemingly unlimited resources. In the middle of this investigation, the Wayfarer, a Supe bar owned by Menolly (one of the sisters) is attacked and burned to the ground and there are several fatalities. And to top it all off, they have to head back to Otherworld, namely Elqaneve, for a meeting with Queen Asteria, who is holding the spirit seals that Shadow Wing is desperately searching for in order to open the portals.

Upon their arrival in Elqaneve, Camille feels an evil presence and as they enter the castle things go bad very quickly. Very very bad, very very quickly………….. The evil presence is a storm stronger than anything they’ve ever experienced. It is a living, breathing entity that is leaving complete and utter devastation in its wake. The sisters and their entourage were separated once the building started collapsing and Queen Asteria’s right hand man whisks Camille and Delilah away to a safe location. While waiting on the storm to pass, Delilah is called into action as a death maiden to escort a soul to its final destination. She had been forewarned that one of the souls that she’d be escorting would be hard to accept…………What an understatement. Once that job is finished, she and Camille make their way back home to try and make sense of everything that’s going on. They also have no way of knowing who survived and who didn’t. Will the sisters and their entourage be reunited? Well, you’ll just have to read to find out.

Galenorn has once again written an intriguing story of good versus evil, and boy, did evil get a leg up in this one! There was so much happening in this that it was hard for me to put into words to make it understandable. Suffice it to say, parts of this one were a little hard to read. We lose a pretty major player in the good versus evil game. And, for the first time in this series, there were loose ends left hanging. LOTS OF THEM!!!! Normally, at the end of the books in this series, things are carried through to fruition, at least the current story line. The next rolls into the next stage of the battle. This one left me hanging so high, my shoulder got yanked out of socket! LOL!! I for one CANNOT wait for the next installment!!

Yasmine Galenorn-Interview with the Author

Yasmine Galenorn-Interview with the Author

Yasmine Galenorn

With the January 29, 2013 release of HAUNTED MOON-the 13th story line in the Otherworld series, The Reading Cafe would like to introduce the fabulous author-YASMINE GALENORN

Follow Yasmine at : Goodreads / Website/Blog/Facebook / Twitter / Tumblr

Interview yellow:black

TRC: Hi Yasmine and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the new release-HAUNTED MOON.

For anyone who does not know Yasmine Galenorn, would you please tell us something about yourself?

Yasmine: Well, my bio reads as such: New York Times, USA Today, and Publisher’s Weekly bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn writes urban fantasy for Berkley: both the Otherworld/Sisters of the Moon Series for Berkley and the Indigo Court urban fantasy series. In the past, she wrote mysteries for Berkley Prime Crime, and nonfiction metaphysical books. You can reach her at her website, Twitter, and on Facebook. Yasmine has been in the Craft for over 32 years, is a shamanic witch, and describes her life as a blend of teacups and tattoos. She lives in Kirkland WA with her husband Samwise and their cats.

What my bio doesn’t say is that I collect Old Country Roses china, my favorite magazine is Victoria Magazine, I collect daggers and have a kick-ass sword. I’m heavily inked and planning out my next tattoos, everything I do is tinged with my spirituality, I’m low carb and blog a lot about my food allergies/intolerances/and low carb lifestyle. I wanted to be a writer since I was three years old. I’ve had over 34 books published, not including anthologies, I’m a Capricorn and work my ass off, but I also like to play hard. ~smiles~ There’s a lot more but it would fill a book.

haunted-moonTRC: HAUNTED MOON (Book #13) is the latest release (January 29, 2013) in your OTHERWORLD series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Yasmine: Camille and her sisters are facing down Gulakah, the Lord of Ghosts and his minions, in this book, they have to face him down and hopefully defeat him. Camille and Morio find their relationship shifting, thanks to Aeval and the Courts of Fae, and their descent into the world of death magic grows stronger, and more intense. At the same time, Telazhar is escalating the war in Otherworld. And, of course, Menolly and Delilah are experiencing their own changes as well. Oh—and Iris is very pregnant. ~grins~

Yasmine Galenorn Collage

TRC: If you could virtually cast the lead characters in your OTHERWORLD series, which models or actors would best represent your ideal images?

Yasmine: To be honest, I wouldn’t. Except for Rozurial, and I can so see a long haired Hugh Jackman as Rozurial. But I’ve yet to see any actress I’d cast (looks-wise) as any of the sisters. For one thing, my characters aren’t human, they have an otherworldly look that would be hard to get. For another, I just can’t see the series as live-action movies. However, I would love to see the books come out as anime—I think as an anime series, it would work, much like InuYasha.

TRC: You have a very specific playlist of music and musicians that you listen to as you write each of your novels. How much influence do the songs and musicians have on your writing or does your writing influence the type of music you listen to?

Yasmine: Well, it’s synergistic. I never add music to my playlists that I wouldn’t normally listen to, but within the scope of my musical tastes (which is fairly large, barring country, folk, and easy listening), the playlists are chosen for the mood of the book, and the main character involved. You’ll always find Gary Numan, Mark Lanegan, and a few other artists on every list, and a few songs make every single list.

Night Vision July 2013

TRC: NIGHT VISION is the next installment (July 2013) in your INDIGO COURT series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Yasmine: Destined to become the Fae Queens of Winter and Summer, Wind Witch Cicely and her cousin Rhiannon are eager to assume their roles and marry the loves of their lives. But while Myst hides in the shadows, seeking to regroup her forces, a closer danger is lurking. Renegade vampires Geoffrey and Leo manage to free the Blood Oracle and set him upon New Forest, Washington. Not satisfied with wreaking havoc on the town, Leo ups the ante by kidnapping Rhiannon. Now, Cicely must lead her forces in a bloody battle to save her cousin before everything they’ve worked for crumbles to dust.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about you?

Yasmine: That depends on who you ask. I’m hardcore Pagan, yes, but I’m not at all Wiccan, I’m a shamanic Witch and High Priestess. I’m practical and extremely goal oriented, and I am so NOT a new-ager type. I’m a hardcore carnivore. I’m not a pacifist, I’m learning to use a gun properly and am not anti-gun, though yes—I do believe we need stronger gun control laws. While I am extremely socially liberal, I am also very conservative when it comes to dealing with certain perverted elements of the criminal world.

As an author, I’d have to say that the biggest misconception is that I have all this spare time in which to goof around. I write 60-80 hours a week. Any spare time is time carved out, not extra time lying around. What success I’ve had is success I’ve created, not luck falling into my lap. Life is what you choose to make it. While not everything that you want will happen—there are no guarantees in life—nothing good happens without working your butt off for it. ~smiles~

TRC: If you could change something about yourself personal or professional, what would it be and why?

Yasmine: Professionally: Well it’s not something I can guarantee, but I’d love to hit the top of the NYT. Always have wanted that. I’d like to see my readership increase dramatically. And if I could—I’d love to be able to write a fourth novel each year. There are so many stories I want to tell for my readers. And for myself. ~smiles~

Personally: I’m making major changes in my body, so it’s more of a matter of how far I can take them as opposed to wishing I could make them. I went low carb almost two years ago to counter mild type 2 diabetes, and my life has changed in absolutely wonderful ways. I’m so much healthier, my blood sugar has normalized, I’ve dropped six sizes so far, the lack of sugar and starch has loosened up my joints and taken away a good share of the chronic pain I was in. I’m still losing weight (and can well afford to lose weight—and want to), and I feel fantastic. I’ve also been exercising for three years now and that has been good for me too.

TRC: Who or what has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

Yasmine: There is no one person who has been the biggest influence, but there are a number that have had huge influences on various parts of my life. The short list (of a longer list):
The writers who influenced me the most artistically: Ray Bradbury, Daphne du Maurier, Richard Adams.
The writers/friends whose work ethics I most admire (and tend to be most like): Laurell Hamilton, Stella Cameron, Sherrilyn Kenyon.
The friend who constantly reminds me to stay on my spiritual path, through action rather than words: Angela.
The friend who reminds me to have fun and not grow up too fast: Jayelle.
The friend who reminds me that my age doesn’t have to stifle me: Carol.
The friend who rules the universe with me: Daniela.
The friend to whom I cannot lie: Andrew.
The person who reminds me that yes, someone can be in love with me and find me attractive: Samwise.

TRC: Who is the first person you think about when you need someone to talk with and why?

Yasmine: That depends on the situation. ~grins~ The list includes: Samwise, Angela, Jayelle, Daniela, Carol, Scotty, Marc, Andrew, Laurell, Lisa, and Linda. And the reasons why? Are as varied as the people involved.

TRC: What are the goals you would like accomplish in the next ten years?

Yasmine: Expand and continue the Otherworld Series in ways that my readers do not even yet expect. Hit the top of the NYT list, of course. Increase my readership by a wide margin. Start another series that I’ve been thinking about after I finish up the Indigo Court Series. Write several standalone novels.

And on a personal level: reach a point (in the next year or so) where I stabilize my weight and health. Be healthier than I’ve ever been (trust me, I wasn’t that healthy as a teenager). Be in better shape and look better than I have in years. Be stronger than ever. Increase my magickal practice (am working on that now) in the new direction its taking. Make being “middle aged” fun and sensuous and brilliant, rather than a long slide down.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Yasmine: I’m writing Autumn Whispers, after which I’ll write Crimson Veil (book 15 in the OW series). And—as I answer this—I’m gearing up for the release of Haunted Moon.

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Foods: Steak, lobster, raspberries.

Favorite Dessert: Berries (I don’t eat dessert anymore)

Favorite TV Show: Criminal Minds. Chopped.

Last Movie You Saw: Worlds Away (at the theatre).

Dark or Milk Chocolate: I prefer milk chocolate but cannot eat it due to the dairy and the sugar, so very dark chocolate has to do (dairy free, and as low carb as I can find it).

Do you have any pets? LOL, everybody who follows me knows I’m the crazy cat lady. I’m an ailurophile. We have four kitties. They are my babies.

TRC: Thank you Yasmine for taking the time to answer our questions.
Congratulations on the latest release. We wish you much success will all of your future projects and novels.

Yasmine: Thank you!

From Yasmine Galenorn’s Website

Hi, I’m New York Times, USA TODAY, and Publisher’s Weekly bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn. In April 2012, I won a Career Achievement Award in Urban Fantasy at the Romantic Times Convention.

I write two urban fantasy series, the Otherworld Series, (aka Sisters of the Moon Series), and Indigo Court Series for Berkley. In the past, I’ve also written a paranormal mystery series (the Chintz ‘n China Series) for Berkley Prime Crime, a short-lived mystery series (the Bath & Body Series) under the name of India Ink, again for Berkley Prime Crime, and eight metaphysical nonfiction books (Llewellyn Publications and Crossing Press).

I’m represented by Meredith Bernstein of the Meredith Bernstein Literary Agency–I adore my agent and am thrilled to have her on my side.

And yes, I’m a shamanic witch and am considered an elder in the Pagan community, having been in the Craft since February 29th (yes, leap year day), 1980. I walk an eclectic path and consider my life to be a blend of teacups and tattoos–the former in my china closet, the latter on my skin–I’m heavily inked. I no longer teach magical workshops nor do I accept students or offer personal magical advice. I collect teacups, teapots, Old Country Roses china (Royal Albert), antlers and skulls (of the non-human variety), daggers and crystals. And of course, my bookshelves are overflowing with books. I cannot walk out of a bookstore without buying at least one book. My TBR pile is huge!

I’m a theatre major, a 1983 graduate of the Evergreen State College (Olympia WA). I started college when I was fifteen, skipping high school. I took extra time to finish because of money considerations and a hiatus when I was 17, to hitchhike to California where I lived with one of my sisters for a brief time.

On Beltane, 1993 (May 1st) I married Samwise and we’re still very happily married. We are the parents of one senior kitty and three young cats. Three of our senior gurlz went over the Bridge a few years ago and we still miss them terribly. We reside in the Seattle WA area.

Because so many people ask, you pronounce my first name this way: Yaz-mihn (NOT Jasmine–it’s a “Y”, not a “J”) and our last name is pronounced: Gal-eh-norn. The accent is on the first syllable. Interesting trivia: Samwise and I created our last name together after we got married. At first, he took my last name, but I decided I didn’t want to be stuck with my stepfather’s last name forever. So we decided to construct a name that would be ours alone and that would mean something to us. We created our last name out of the Elvish in LOTR. Galenorn means Green Tree in Elvish, went to court, and legalized it. And yes, Samwise is his *real* name.
