REVIEW:WHEN WE BREAK is the second instalment in Kristen Proby’s contemporary, adult THE BLACKWELLS OF MONTANA erotic, romance series, a spin off, set in the author’s The Wilds of Montana series. This is thirty-one year old, rancher Beckett ‘Beck’ Blackwell, and twenty-seven year old, Irish-born dancer Skyla Gallagher’s story line. WHEN WE BREAK can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from three first person perspectives (Beck, Skyla, Stalker) WHEN WE BREAK follows Skyla Gallagher in the aftermath of a career ending injury. Skyla Gallagher was a prima ballerina but a stalker, and an injury, forces Skyla to leave her beautiful New York, and head to the open skies of Bitterroot Valley, Montana, where she will make new friends, and open a dance studio, teaching to children. Meeting Beck Blackwell stirs something deep within our story line heroine but the demons from her past refuse to let go, and Skyla struggles to open her heart to anyone else. Beckett Blackwell is a rancher, and very close to his siblings and friends but meeting Skyla Gallagher pushes Beckett to pursue the woman with whom he will fall in love but Skyla’s stalker refuses to back down, and law enforcement claim their hands are tied.

The world building focuses on the friendships and relationships in Bitterroot Valley, as Skyla learns the value of friends and family. Beckett knows Skyla is the woman that calls to his heart but a devastating injury, and the ongoing threat of her stalker are at the forefront Skyla’s inability to move forward.

The relationship between Skyla and Beckett is one of mutual attraction but Skyla struggles with the betrayal from the past. Beckett is determined to prove Skyla is worthy of love; a second chance to claim a happily ever after. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Once again, there is a large ensemble group of energetic and welcoming secondary and supporting characters including the return of some of the characters from the original Wilds of Montana series, as well as Beckett’s parents Brandon and Becca Blackwell, sister Billie, brothers Black and Bridger (Dani), and Bridger’s daughter Birdie; Dani’s twin sister Alex, and coffee shop owner Millie Wild (She’s A Wild One 5). We are introduced to Skyla’s very protective brother and hotelier Connor Gallagher, and his security Miller; Skyla’s parents Patrick and Maeve, and former dancer partner Mik and his husband Benji.

WHEN WE BREAK is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, family and friendships, relationships and love. The character driven premise is edgy and thrilling; the characters are animated, sassy and dynamic; the romance is spirited and uplifting.
