If I could order this book on a menu this is how I would do it! “I would like to start with the angst salad, followed by the angst steak (med angst please), and for dessert the ANGST pie with a side of angst ice cream!”
Get my meaning? LOL
In spite of all the angst, this is a great read! I gobbled it up in two sittings only because I had to pay my children some attention too .. WINK! It is a heavy book with heavy issues and heavy characters. Let’s meet them shall we?
Cass Daniels is our heroine. Cass is resigned to her pitiful life (self described) living in a run down trailer park with her drug addicted mother and abusive boyfriend (Jackson), and she works at the local greasy spoon diner to support them all. She has no high expectations from life, thinks so low of herself it’s sad and takes on everyone’s “crutch” that it is literally weighing her down. Your heart cannot help but break for her circumstance.
One day while working at the diner, in walks Tucker White. Tucker is handsome, obviously has money in his pocket, and is showing a keen interest in Cass. That interest grows intensely after Tucker witnesses a confrontation between Jackson and Cass and he decides that he wants to take Cass away from this situation. Later in the story it is revealed that Tucker just so happens to be a lead singer in a famous rock band, but came from sad circumstances himself before hitting his fame.
Jackson is a hard character for me to explain. During the story you catch glimpses of who Jackson must of been prior to the drug abuse and how much he really loved Cass. I felt torn at times wanting to see that inner good and hopeful that he could get help and redeem himself. Then he flies off the handle and abusive asshat is back and you realize that there is no hope for him as he doesn’t want to admit his problems or get help. He was dead to me after that!
Cass is admirable and so stupid in so many ways. So many times my heart would break for her circumstance and admire her love for her family despite the horror they bring her. Then she would be presented with wonderful opportunities and she would back away from them. I cannot begin to imagine what it would be like to have her life … but I do know she is one F*^&^ up girl.
The story take us through the ups and downs of her forming relationship with Tucker (they have some really beautiful moments together). We experience the sneaking around and the fear she’ll get caught (this alone kept me at the edge of my seat) and of course the inevitable moment when SH&^ HITS THE FAN! Believe me it hits HARD!
If you are looking for a light fluffy book .. take a pass! If the intricate heavy appeals to you, then this is for you. It’s heavy alright, but so beautiful at times as well. Teresa Mummert sure got the name of this book PERFECT. It is WHITE TRASH BEAUTIFUL and I look forward to reading more of Tucker and Cass’s story in the upcoming books!

Lori, seriously my BP went up and down reading this book! I oohed and awed in all the right moments and wanted to jump in the story and smack the crap out of Cass for her stupidity at other moments. If a book makes me feel like that .. author well done! 😉
A super review, Rachel. It does sound like a heavy read. But the fact that the author still reached out to you with beauty beneath the angst says a lot for the author. I guess I would have to be in the mood to read this one some day.
Yah Barb .. you def have to be in the right mind set for this book! The author really did a great job with the beauty among the ugly .. like I said in my review .. the title was PERFECT! 😉

Great review Rachel. As for angst, I think most of the NEW ADULT storylines are very angst ridden.
YA has the proverbial love triangles and New Adult is angst ridden
