It’s wonderful to be back at The Reading Café today. Thanks so much for having me.

Today is Release Day for X Marks the Scot, and I’m so happy to be here to share it with you. The second book in the Bad Boys of the Highlands series starts off where Temptation in a Kilt left off. Declan MacGregor is charged with escorting the bloody Campbell’s sister to the English court. And he’s not happy.

Declan was so much fun to write, especially since he’s the biggest bad boy of the series. His character was loosely based on Ian Somerhalder’s character on The Vampire Diaries, Damon Salvatore. Although Declan sometimes takes it a bit more over-the-top than Mr. Salvatore, deep down, the man has a big heart and I’ll think readers will recognize that, too.

On the other hand, Lady Liadain Campbell has had enough of men and their games. When she’s thrown together with the infamous MacGregor rogue, sparks fly, tempers flare and attraction is hard to resist, even though she tries.

X Marks the Scot Blurb:

He was a Highland Rogue—Wicked with a Bow and Arrow and Just as Wicked with the Ladies.

Declan MacGregor hadn’t a care in the world beyond finding a soft bed and a willing woman…until he had to escort Lady Liadain Campbell to the English court. The woman needles him at every turn, but he can’t just abandon her to that vipers’ nest without protection.

She Never Asked for a Bodyguard…

Liadain wasn’t thrilled to be left in the care of her clan’s archrival. It was as if the man never had a lady tell him no before! And yet as whispers of treason swirl through the court and the threat of danger grows even sharper, her bitter enemy soon becomes the only one she can trust…

Excerpt:

“Get up, ye whoreson.”

Praying he was still in an ale-induced state and only dreaming, Declan MacGregor of Glenorchy slowly opened his eyes as he felt the prick of cold steel against his throat. A man with graying hair at his temples stood a hairbreadth away from the bed, dagger in hand.

A muscle ticked in the man’s jaw. “Get up,” he said through clenched teeth.

The blonde in the bed next to Declan—what was her name?—gasped and tugged up the blanket to cover her exposed breasts. Her eyes widened in fear.

“Ye defiled my daughter,” the stranger growled.

Declan raised his hands in mock surrender. “I assure ye that I didnae.” He stole a sideways glance at the woman and silently pleaded for his latest conquest to come to his aid.

“Papa?” The fair-skinned beauty sat up on the bed. “What are ye doing here?”

Glancing at his daughter, the man spoke in clipped tones. “This whoreson had ye and will wed ye.”

“Now just a bloody minute. I…”

Whipping his head back around, the enraged father glared at Declan, repositioning the dagger—much lower. Feeling the contact of the blade, Declan took a sharp intake of breath while the woman sprang from the bed as though it was afire. Hastily, she grabbed her clothing and started to don her attire.

He silently chuckled, realizing the irony of the moment. What would Ciaran think? Declan had chosen to remain at court to escape his older brother’s scrutiny, now only to be thrown deeper into hot water. In fact, it was scalding.

The fair-colored lass rolled her eyes at her father. “Really, Papa, ye must cease your attempts at matchmaking. I donna wish to wed him.”

She pulled on her father’s dagger-held hand, thankfully removing the blade from the most favorite part of Declan’s anatomy. He breathed a sigh of relief when he reached down and felt that his most prized possession was still intact.

What the hell had he gotten himself into? The gods knew he had needs, but if he wasn’t more selective of the women he bedded, the fairer sex would surely be the death of him.

He needed to escape.

Declan threw back the blankets, stood, and quickly tossed his trews into the air with his foot. While father and daughter were huddled in deep conversation, he donned his trews, pulled on his tunic, grabbed his boots, and simply walked out—unnoticed and unscathed.

  1. Judging from the excerpt…my new favorite bad boy would have to be Declan MacGregor! This sounds really good, and I’m in need of both a little romance and a bad boy to love! LOL Thanks for coming to the Café, this month is going to be so much fun! Good luck and keep writing…and I’ll keep reading!

    • Aww… Thanks so much. It’s always nice to be here.

I love the cover, too. Although, my father keeps telling people he’s the male cover model. *shaking head*

        • We keep laughing. You should see the cover of the third book! Alexander has HUGE muscles on that cover. We keep telling my dad, “Boy, you really beefed up for that one!”

I go to book signings and the man recruits for me by telling people he’s the cover model and Sourcebooks just photo-shops his head. Too funny.

  2. Victoria, I love your novels and your writing style. I bought Temptation in a Kilt and LOVED it. I look forward to reading X Marks the Scot. What a cool name!!!! The covers are worth the price alone!! lol

    • I swear the readers on this site are the kindest EVER!

Thanks so much, Jules. I’m so glad you like the series. It truly makes me happy that readers connect with my wee Scottish tales. If you read Temptation, then I think you know that Declan will not disappoint. He’s so good and being so verra bad!

      Thanks for your kind words.

    • Hi Alexiis. It’s great to be back!

I love the cover as well. One thing about Sourcebooks… They make awesome covers. I hope you enjoy Declan and Liadain’s story.

  3. Wow, I must be running late. *looks around and Victoria is on the move*

Thank you Victoria for dropping by today. Hope to see you later as well. And The Bad Boys of the Highland is an amazing series. Glad Declan found his mate!!

    • Thank you so much for having me again, Sandy. Always a pleasure, and your folks are always so nice!

I’m really glad you like the series. It was so much fun to write.

    • I still tear up when I look back over Temptation in a Kilt. Ciaran and Rosalia were truly a love match. *sigh*

I don’t think you’ll need Kleenex on this one, but you might need something to punch. Declan gets pretty riled up in this one. At times, the man even made my blood boil–and not in the good way!

      I hope you enjoy it.

  4. I keep seeing this book. Love highlanders and this one has been on my TBR since I first saw the cover.
As for Bad Boy… well, you got to love Barrons and Ryo from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series — however, if you want a highlander Christian MacKeltar is becoming quite the bad boy now too. I also love Rhys from Darynda Jones’ Graves series. I absolutely love Jason, The Warlock King, from Heather Killough-Walden as well. I love my heroes to be a bit rough around the edges.

  5. Hey Victoria! I cannot wait to read Declan’s story! Highland bad boys are the best!!! My favorite bad boy is Sawyer from LOST. I love him so much, I named my Doxie after him.

  6. Hey Victoria I’m sorry to say I have been out of the loop for awhile but I have just got back into reading and your Declan sound like he will be a really great read and a Highlander to boot . Can’t wait !!

  7. Hi Victoria, thanks for coming. Beautiful cover and it made me sit up straight and say, “Oh my”! Looking forward to reading this series.

Whose my favorite bad boy? Lothaire from Kresley Cole’s Immortal After Dark Series. When Lothaire says, “Be a Dear”, it does something for me. *deep sigh*

Sandy great job and please enter me in the contest. I need to get to know Declan a little better. lol

  8. HI. I think Scots make the ultimate bad boys, so Declan would be it.. A brawny highlander in a kilt–(thump thump) sigh..
This book sounds great thank you for the chance to win it..

  9. Love the title and I think X Marks the Scot sounds like a fantastic book.
My favorite bad boy is Bones form Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series.

  10. Awesome cover and loved the excerpt. Love me some highlanders 😀 I don’t think I have a fave bad boy, they are all so yummy and looks like Declan will be added to my list too 😛 Thank you for the opportunity and will be checking your books out for sure.

  11. Well, I have enjoyed so many so-called bad boys in books I’ve read, and seen most of them quit their bad-boy habits when they succumb to a lovely heroine–that I do not have one favorite! I’m a romance junkie, I admit it. I live for the happily-ever-afters as they offer solace in this too-violent, too-negative, too-political, media-run world. When I read a historical romance (esp. Scots!) I can fall asleep relaxed at night…with a smile on my face. It doesn’t get better than that!

  12. Hey Victoria, I really enjoyed the excert!!I became hooked on these amazingly wicked Highlanders when I read Hannah Howell! I have to admit my favorite bad boy is Ian from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series. I really believe he’s hiding more than he’s letting to be. I’ve been looking for new authors and books to add to my list. I can’t wait to read Declan’s story.
